Biography | From Gayle Poole: At Georgia Tech Dad was a member of the ROTC. At that time they didn't want to send all of their graduates directly into Military Service. He received a job opportunity with General Motors in Dayton, Ohio. However, being the dutiful young American male he sorely wanted to serve his country. There was a small problem or two. Firstly, the minimum height requirement of 5 foot 7. He was only 5 foot six, flat footed and a birth defect in his right eye. So he put lifts in his shoes and learned the eye chart from memory. On June 30, 1944 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He attended Tactical Radar, CIC School and was assigned to the U.S.S Lander (APA-178) where he was CIC and Fighter Director, and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre (2 stars), Philippine Liberation, and Victory Medal (II)/ He was Honorably Discharged March, 1946 with $100.00 in pay. As a side note his friend George Martin, from Georgia Tech, has him assigned to this Carrier. On July 24, 1945 he and 5 friends drove non-stop from San Diego (their ship had docked for repairs) to Atlanta so that he could possibly get home for my birth. They came to Atlanta from Gay, and stayed at the Henry Grady Hotel. They walked Mom up and down Peachtree gave her caster oil, and made her jump up and down on the bed. That didn't work, so they went to dinner. At 12:05 Am July 25 she went to Old Piedmont Hospital, and I was born at 1:35 am. At the time fathers were not allowed into Maternity. However, the Doctor and Hospital made an exception for Dad to see me as her was about to return to the Pacific fleet. In 1968 on our second family trip to Europe Dad related some things about his Naval experience. He told me when they boarded the Lander their orders were to go and Pickup the Marines out of the Straits of Nagasaki and go back out into the Pacific and re-group with the rest of the fleet for a frontal assault on Japan. As we know the rest is history. The Air Force dropped the A-Bomb on Nagasaki on August 6, 1945. Dad also related that The Kamazai pilot's would aim at their ship knowing they had Marines on board, but missed. It wasn't until I visited Pearl Harbor Memorial did I realize the impact of what he must have gone through.1 |
