Biography* There is a notation in J.N. Culpepper's Bible that indicates that Mary E. Blackman was born in Alabama. Edna Culpepper Stewart, a daughter, says that Mary Blackman had Indian blood. Granddad Culpepper also kept a diary on the back of a receipt book. In it he lists his mother's birthday as July 11, 1861 (instead of 1862) and says she was born in Upshir or Upshar Co., Texas, instead of Alabama. A family Bible also lists her birth as July 11, 1862 -- I suspect it is either in her handwriting or her husband's George L. (Source: Bob Stewart, FTM file, Feb 2000)
.
The following is an excerpt from Part II of a ledger left by Josie Mary Culpepper Wilson Burger for her children, October 21, 1957:
My mother was about 5 foot 7. She had natural black curly hair. She was sick for several years with a bronical trouble and was an invalid the last 3 years of her life. She was a very devout Christian. She knew her bible from cover to cover. People came from near and far, for advice about the bible. She could always tell them, or help find what they wanted to know.
She was a practical nurse and midwife. She delivered 22 babies during World War I while the doctors were in the service. We lived in Victoria County and lived 22 miles from a doctor. She never lost a mother or baby. Her services were always free. Her moto was, help those that need help.
All I know about my mother?s family: She was the youngest child of Ashley Green Blackman and Ester Lenina (Brown) Blackman. Her brothers and sisters were Shirley, Ashley, Green, Joe, Thomas, and
Martha. The entire family are dead. Grandpa Blackman died at the end of the civil war and Grandma raised all the children and never married again. She lived with my mother and father until her death in 1904. The year before I was born. My mother was born July 11, 1862.
Uncle Joe Blackman was the only one I ever knew. He has 4 boys. Green, Tom, Sam and George ?- George is dead. Tom lives at Trinity, Texas, owns a garage. Green lives in Hobbs, New Mexico. Tom has one daughter who is a lawyer.
Aunt Martha married a Karnes. She had several Children. Florence and Morris Karnes are the only names I ever knew of her children. I never saw Aunt Martha.
Uncle Shirley and Uncle Green died when young men. They never married. Uncle Shirley died from phenomena, Uncle Green had T.B.

Biography* The following is excerpted from Part II of a ledger left by Josie Mary Culpepper Wilson Burger for her children, October 21, 1957 (Since there are some details such as Rowell Culpepper's burial that occurred after Josie's death, apparently another family member appended info):
Uncle Jim was married twice. He had 2 children by his first wife: Maggie (Mrs. Travis Lowe), and Rowell. He had 5 children by Aunt Nan (who was Nancy Tucker before her marriage). They are J. C. (James Cecil), Edna (Mrs. Robert Stewart), Loraine, and the twins Leland Landry and Lelia Lillian (Mrs. Charles Meyers). (Uncle Jim, Aunt Nan, and J. C. are buried in Floresville, Texas. Edna, chronic diabetic, and Lillian, border line diabetic, both are at rest in Clyde, Texas, Leland is at rest in Refugio, Texas, Rowell was a tin smith and is buried in Corpus Christi. His sons live there and they are tin smiths. Uncle Jim went to a doctor in Victoria back in the later forties and received a pencillian shot and he was allergic to it. When he started sweating his skin just scuffed off. The last time I saw him alive I was about 12 and he actually looked like a skinned rabbit. They kept vasiline all over him to try to keep air from drying him out. His 6 foot plus frame was like 5 foot 8. He, of course, was bed ridden and lived about 2 years before the Lord gave him relief. His wife was the Aunt Nan that mama keeps referring to.)
