Biography* | | William Sasser was the first resident of the town which would be called Gay. The following is from a booklet Gay Georgia p. 1: The lot of land on which Gay is built was bought by William Sasser in 1831. He was the first settler on this lot, having moved here in a covered wagon in 1829. He lived in this wagon until a house could be built of logs. Parts of this house are still standing but the newer part of the present house was built in 1893. Mr. Sasser was born and raised in North Carolina, was married to Miss Elizabeth Beverly who was also born and raised in North Carolina. The father of Mrs. Elizabeth Beverly Sasser was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and fought under General George Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Sasser lived here the remainder of their lives. About 1850 Mr. Sasser donated two acres of land for school purposes in what was then known as Sasserville (now Gay). A school was built and in 1852,two teachers were hired, George W. Wright and William T. Revill, Mr. Revill, then a youth of sixteen. About this time Mr. William Lowe kept a stage coach stand here, the place being on the stage run from Griffin to LaGrange. Some of the early settlers in and around Sasserville (Gay) were Thomas O'Neal, Issac Thrash, Edmund Baughan, Jimmy Perdue, Asa Linn, Sutlery Rodgers, Henry L. Jones, Jimmy Barron, Jacky Jones, Sumner Brown, Dr. Kit Thrash, Thomas Cooper, Baker Mann, Daniel Keith, Louis Plant and John P. Atkinson. |
