Charles V. Dean

Biography* Charles V. Dean is the son of Othal Augusta and Mary Norma Louise (Rivers) Dean. He was 16 years old when his father died. According to notes from Charles, he married Sandra Kay Grooms in 1961 and, in 1962, he completed work on a Bachelor of Science degree in Personnel Administration at Samford University in Birmingham, AL.

From 1964 to 1966, he worked as Assistant Personnel Superintendent at the Beaunit Fibers, Inc. plant in Childersburg, AL. 1200 union employees and over 100 professional employees worked at the plant where viscose rayon was produced. In 1966, Charles was hired as Director of Personnel for J. P. Stevens and Co., Inc. in Montgomery, AL. At the time, this was the largest textile company in the United States and 600 employees at the Montgomery plant manufactured quality yarns.

Charles directed personnel activities including the development of a safety program for OSHA compliance. In 1974, Charles went to work as Director of Personnel for St. Margaret's Hospital in Montgomery, AL but was quickly promoted to Assistant Administrator of Human Resources, Hospital Education, Physical Therapy, Risk Management, Social Work Services, Safety and Security, Plant Services, Pathology Lab, Pharmacy, Dietary, Surgery, Environmental Services, Purchasing, Central Supply, Receiving and Stores. He was also charged with managing a 1.5 million dollar land acquisition program.

Charles continued his education and, in 1979, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree through the Executive M.B.A. Program at Florida Atlantic University at Boca Raton, FL. In 1981, he married Karen Lynne Schiesz and, in 1984, he was promoted to Vice President of Human Resources at St. Margaret's Hospital. He was charged with responsibility for recruitment, employment, wage and salary administration, employee relations and employee benefits as well as hospital security, staff development and land acquisition. in 1990, Charles became Director of Human Resources at St. Jude Medical Center where he was charged with responsibility for recruitment, employment, wage and salary administration, employee relations and benefits as well as Payroll, Staff Development, and the Information Systems Departments.

Charles is a member of the Alabama Hospital Personnel Association, the American Society of Personnel Administrators, and the Montgomery Area Personnel Association. He is also a member of Rotary International, Capital City Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Taylor Road Baptist Church. He is 5'8" tall and his hobbies include woodworking and bass fishing.
