He served fifty years in the ministry and during that time led a full and useful life. He was an early pastor at Columbus, Gloster, Lumberton, Poplarville, Newton and many other churches in the state. He was pastor at Logtown when he retired in 1944.* He taught school for twenty years, along with his ministry. He taught at Clarke Memorial College**, Newton, Mississippi, four years and at Pearl River College many years. During fifty years Rev. Culpepper officiated at 1000 funerals; a large number of weddings; helped build 10 new church buildings and four pastor's homes; and saw 8000 people become members of the church at meetings he held. During that fifty years, he missed only seven Sundays due to illness.

     * Article in Bryan newspaper, Eagle, 1944 concerning visit of C.C.Culpepper.. "His only regret at being out in Texas at this time was that he missed hearing his brother, Rev. J.P. Culpepper, preach at the Baptist Church on the date that he had been ordained by that church 50 years ago."

William Samuel Culpepper1

M, (8 June 1874 - 10 December 1939)
FatherJoel Bluett Culpepper (Jan 1848 - 11 Jan 1911)
MotherMary A. McFarland (Aug 1847 - Nov 1908)
DNA* William has been proven by DNA and genealogical research to be a descendant of Joseph Culpepper of Jackson Co., GA, the son of Joseph Culpepper of Morgan Co., GA, the son of Joseph Culpepper of Edgecombe Co., NC, the son of Robert Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, the son of Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, VA.
Birth*8 June 1874 William was born at Lauderdale Co., Mississippi, on 8 June 1874.2
(Son) Census1890 He listed as son(s) in the census report at Lenwood, Kemper Co., Mississippi, in 1890.3
(Son) Census1896 He listed as son(s) in the census report at Kemper Co., Mississippi, in 1896.4
Marriage*14 May 1899 He married Annie Josephine Blanks at Lauderdale Co., Mississippi, on 14 May 1899 at age 24.5

WWI Draft Reg*12 September 1918 William registered for the WW-I draft, naming Annie Josephine Culpepper as his nearest relative, on 12 September 1918 at Lauderdale Co., Mississippi.8

1930 Census*1 April 1930 William was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census at Kemper Co., Mississippi. Neither Frankie nor Earl were enumerated in the household of William in the 1920 census, although they both would have been young children at that time. Thus, they might not be biological children and were adopted after the 1920 census. However, DNA testing of a descendant of Frankie reveals that Frankie is a descendant of Joseph Culpepper of Morgan, as is William. So if Frankie had been adopted, he was adopted from a related Culpepper family.10
Biography* Sam was a sawyer by trade. He followed the sawmill business, as his father had before him. When the sawmill moved, he moved. Many times he would board for two weeks at a time before coming home. The family lived on a farm and the boys were taught how to run it. Before leaving Sam would assign the boys chores and upon his return they were expected to be done. He enjoyed making music. When just a young man, he learned to play, and could play anything he had ever heard. The family had an old pump organ and had many good singings with Sam at the keyboard. He also played the harmonica.
Death*10 December 1939 He died at Meridian, Lauderdale Co., Mississippi, on 10 December 1939 at age 65.
Burial*circa 12 December 1939 His body was interred circa 12 December 1939 at Mount Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery, Duffee, Newton Co., Mississippi.11

In 1883 he entered Howard College in Birmingham, which he attended for three years. The Baptist State Mission Board then sent him to Bessemer, AL, which was then a rapidly growing town with no Baptist church. After two years in Bessemer he accepted an invitation to the pastorate of the Second Church, Meridian, MS, then called Calvary Baptist, now part of Forty-First Avenue Baptist. After two years there, William spent some months in revival meetings with different churches. He entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in the fall of 1893, and spent a year there before returning to the ministry in Mississippi (From Mississippi Baptist Preachers, by Foster, p.174-175). William was a member of the King Solomon Masonic Lodge in Meridian and was also mentioned in the book, "Southern Baptist Ministers."
