Biography* | Louis Alford Culpepper wrote the following letter to his grandson, Richard Alphord Morgan Route 2 Temple, Texas October 11th, 1942 R. A. Morgan % Fleet Post Office San Francisco, Calif. Dear Grandson, We received your welcome letter this last week. We were glad to hear from you. We are getting along pretty well now, and having fair cool nights and big dews. I am gathering a few pecans. No budded kind hardly. I am pulling them off green, before the crows get them all. People are nearly done picking cotton and gathering corn. Pretty good crops made. Not many pecans in this part of Bell County. Well Alphord you wrote that you wanted to know of your kin folks. I will write you what I can. My Grandfather was born in Virginia I think, I have his birth. John J. Culpepper was born Nov. the 4th, 1797. I can tell some of his brothers & sisters names, William Culpepper, Sarah Elliott, died in Alabama. Frank Culpepper came to Texas with a colony of people years ago in wagons, settled in Lavaco Co. and named the place Sweet Home. Washington, came to Texas somewhere. My father William Washington Culpepper was born near Fredonia, Ala. August the 14th, 1834. He had one brother older Jeff Culpepper. Both were buried near Albertville, Alabama. John J. Culpepper died May 4th, 1885, all his brothers and sisters lived to be right at one hundred years. I was born close to Laguna [Louina] near Wadley Alabama March 26th, 1874, Married August 28th, 1892. I had 10 brothers and sisters. All were born near Wadley, Alabama, Randolph Co. All dead but 4 of us, 1 brother near Wadley, Alabama, Robert Benjeman Culpepper, 1 sister Sara Minny Gibson, 1315 Ave. H Ensley, Alabama, 1 sister Ellen Arline Lowery, Gadsden, Ala. Ellen is younger, Sally older, Ben 8 years older than I. Ben has a boy Cholly Culpepper in Washington D.C., 1 boy Howard in the north eastern states somewhere, railroading. Cholly is in agriculture. My Mother, Ferby Cardwell was born August 11th, 1834, she had 1 brother Ben Cardwell, lived and died near Coleman Alabama, near Shelby Co. line. 1 sister came to Texas I forgot her name. 1 half brother William Cardwell, lived near the same place. My Mother died November 1911, my Father March 2, 1918. Well Alphord we got our bathroom papered and painted, ready to put in the bathroom suit if we can get it. What you gave and our children have about enough to buy it if the government will let us have it. They have froze lots of things, to keep from selling. Lots of love to you and good health and luck. God bless you and your work. I am a sorry hand to get at writing. Write when you can. L.A. Culpepper. |
