Biography* In 1860, Ann McClung was living in the HH of George W. Culpepper with a 2-year-old, Jackson McClung who must have been her child. In 1870 young Jackson was reported as Jackson Culpepper and living with George and his wife Mary. This writer believes that Ann McClung and George's wife Mary were one and the same person, Mary Ann Elizabeth Martin. This is evidenced by the fact that Jackson McClung is listed as a half-brother to Mary Ann's other children in a later census.

I am the gg granddaughter of Katie Mary Culpepper. My grandmother was Mamie Boggs. I sent you some information a few years back when I first began. I found Mary Ann’s information interesting since it showed she married Riley McClung one year and 10 months later married George Washington Culpepper. I don’t know if Riley McClung died in the war or what.

Thanks,
Sheryl Lee

Sheryl,
All we have been able to learn so far is that Mary Ann Elizabeth Martin’s mother was also named Mary. We have found her on a couple of census records, as you can see at our website.
Your question about the back pay of G. W. Culpepper is an interesting one. Perhaps Mary A. E. was living with her mother-in-law Martha at that point, or perhaps Martha did not know her whereabouts. All the records we currently have on this family, including census and military, I believe can be found at the website.
I would be interested in knowing how you are related to this family. Are you a Martin family researcher – or a Culpepper descendant? I have been working on this branch of the Culpeppers for more than 33 years now.

My name is Sheryl Lee and I am researching a wife of a Culpepper and have hit a brick wall. If you can give me a suggestion on where to go from here I would appreciate it. I am seeking the parents of Mary Ann Elizabeth Martin. B abt.1835 in Georgia – last known living in the house of son-in-law in 1910.

Mary Ann Elizabeth Martin previously was married to Riley McClung

Wife of George Washington Culpepper Married 10 Jan 1859

According to the Culpepper Connections, it was said that Martha Byne Blackstone Culpepper petitioned the court for back pay after George W. Culpepper was killed in the war and it appeared there was not a wife.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
