Biography* | | Erma was a beautiful woman and her children were beautiful also. Scott was also a beautiful man with brilliant blue eyes. I met them in their later years and they were still nice to look at. Erma had very deep dimples and when she laughed her eyes sparkled. She said that her grandmother, on her mother's side, was of indian blood, and I believed it because she had almost black hair and very dark brown eyes until her mid 70s. Half of her children had dark brown eyes and hair, and the others had blue eyes and light hair. ... She was a wonderful human being who was very creative and always laughing. ... She was always very spirited. She grew up picking cotton and her father would give her a little money to work. She decided that she didn't like working so she paid one of her sisters to pick her cotton and went into the woods, where she had made a play house.. to play. She said it was too hot. When she was almost 80 she went to the back of her apt in the wooded area, cut down 7 pine trees, cut them up and made herself a patio. ... Another family story is: When Erma and Scott's children were small, they lived in New Merkle out by Cahaba. At the time it was undeveloped, and just woods. Scott was a lineman for the telephone company. One day he fell from a pole and hurt his back so he couldn't work. Erma said every other morning she would go to the door and find food for her family. It had been put there by the Moonshiners, she thought, and she never saw them to thank them. She said they ate better after Scott fell than before.. fresh eggs, fresh milk, etc.1 |

William Richard Culpepper
M, (19 September 1856 - 1857)
Birth* | 19 September 1856 | William was born at Lavaca Co., Texas, on 19 September 1856. |
Death* | 1857 | He died at Lavaca Co., Texas, in 1857. |
Burial* | 1857 | His body was interred in 1857 at Mount Olive Cemetery, Lavaca Co., Texas.1 |
Biography* | | Dr. Charles Lee Culpepper, Sr. recorded W. R. Culpepper's date of birth as "Sept. 9th, 1856." The Culpepper Heritage Association has "Sept. 19th, 1856." Mrs. James L. (Vivian Hastings) Culpepper noted the tombstone in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Lavaca Co., TX in a 24 Sep 1978 letter: W. R. Culpepper 1857 - 1861 Mrs. Culpepper noted that this "could be son of Wm. & 1st wife Vasti or son of D. F. E. & Maryann." This child does not show up in the census records of either family but there are questions about both families in the 1860 census since Daniel appeared to be listed twice and William was listed with a woman, Mary Culpepper, who has not been identified. Mrs. Travis (Jacquline Lorenz) McClinton recorded the tombstone in her Mt. Olive Cemetery records as: W. R. Culpepper 1857 - 1867 The tombstone is recorded on p. 52 of Lavaca Co., TX - Cemetery Records Vol. I by Sammy Tise as: CULPEPPER, W. R. 1857-1867 The child was buried next to another child, "J. N." Culpepper, who is buried next to Mary Ann (Guthrie) Culpepper. |

Death* | 1861 | He died at Lavaca Co., Texas, in 1861. |
Burial* | 1861 | His body was interred in 1861 at Mount Olive Cemetery, Lavaca Co., Texas.1 |
Biography* | | Mrs. James L. (Vivian Hastings) Culpepper recorded the following tombstone in the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Lavaca Co., TX in a 24 Sep 1978 letter: J. M. [sic] Culpepper 1860 - 1861 Mrs. Culpepper added the note that this was "probably son of D. F. & Mary Ann." Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton recorded the tombstone in her Mt. Olive Cemetery records as: J. N. [sic] Culpepper 1860 - 1861 Mrs. McClinton noted that the 1861 might have been 1867. Culpepper Heritage Association records list the name as "James M. Culpepper" and place him as a son of Daniel F. and Mary Ann (Guthrie) Culpepper and with a birth date of 11 May 1859 and a death date from the tombstone of 1861. On p. 52 of Lavaca Co., TX - Cemetery Records Vol. I by Sammy Tise, the tombstone record is listed as: CULPEPPER, J. N._____1860_____1861_____Could be 1867 Unfortunately census records don't help in determining this child's name or parents. J. M. was not listed with the D. F. Culpepper family in the 1860 census even though the family was listed twice. If the child was born in 1860 as indicated by the tombstone, then perhaps he was born after the census was taken. Based on the proximity of the grave to Mary Ann (Guthrie) Culpepper, he is presumed to have been her child. |
