Biography* There is a question about Mary Ann Culpepper's date of birth. The tombstone of Mary Ann's mother, Mary Ann (Guthrie) Culpepper in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Lavaca Co., TX records a death date of 1861 which means either that her mother's date of death is incorrect or that Mary Ann's date of birth 13 Mar 1862 is incorrect. Census records are not very helpful, Mary Ann was listed as nine years old in the 1870 census but as 18 years old in the 1880 census. Mrs. C. M. (Pat Burgin) Lee preserved the following marriage record: W. J. Thames To Mary Ann Culpepper The State of Texas__To Any regularly ordained Minister of the County of Lavaca____Gospel, Judge or Justice of the Peace, Greetings You are hereby Authorized to solemnize the rites of matrimony between W. Mary Ann would have been either 15 or 16 years old when she married. Mary Ann was listed as "my deceased daughther, Mary Ann Thames" in her father's 1898 will.

Eglentine Culpepper

F, (circa 1873 - 8 August 1909)
FatherDaniel F. Culpepper (5 Dec 1825 - 3 Dec 1900)
MotherZilpha L. Reeder (18 Mar 1839 - 21 May 1904)
Name Variation She was also known as Tiny.
Birth*circa 1873 Eglentine was born at Lavaca Co., Texas, circa 1873.
(Daughter) 1880 Census1 June 1880 Eglentine, Blanche and Cynthia was listed as a daughter in Daniel F. Culpepper's household on the 1880 Census at Lavaca Co., Texas.1
Marriage*1899 She married John David Burgin at Texas in 1899.
Married Name1899  As of 1899, her married name was Burgin.
Death*8 August 1909 She died at Tioga, Grayson Co., Texas, on 8 August 1909.
Burial*circa 10 August 1909 Her body was interred circa 10 August 1909 at Tioga Cemetery, Tioga, Grayson Co., Texas
Biography* Eglentine was named after her grandmother and she was listed as "Tina" in the 1880 census and as "Tiny" in her father's will. A mystery Eglentine appeared in the 1870 census in the James L.Culpepper household. This Eglentine was one year old and born in Texas which would match James L. Culpepper's daughter, Virginia Bell. Perhaps she was originally named Eglentine. Daniel did not remarry until 1872 and his daughter, Eglentine, was listed as seven years old in the 1880 census and so cannot have been the Eglentine listed in 1870.
A granddaughter of John David Burgin and his second wife, Bertha (Mary Ruth Burgin Simmang) has 'a notebook written by Tiny detailing their married life which is most interesting.'      Mrs. Simmang also sent the following obituary, written by Tina's husband:
Obituary of Tiny Culpepper Burgin, written by J. D. Burgin and published in the Baptist Trumpet, Tioga, Texas, on 11 November 1909: It is with a sad heart that I attempt to write of the death of my darling wife, Mrs. Tiny Burgin. She was born May 9, 1873, died Aug. 8, 1909, making her stay on earth 36 years, 2 months and 29 days. She was the eldest child of Daniel F. and Zelphia Culpepper. Out of seven children there are only two that survive her, Cynthia and Winnie Burgin. She leaves an infant daughter, the above mentioned sister, half brother, J. W. Hollaway, broken hearted husband and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her loss. She was born and raised at Sweet Home, Lavaca county, Texas. Was educated in the public schools of that county, attended two terms of the Sam Houston State Normal, graduating in 1896. She began teaching while in her teens and took great interest in the work as an instructor, having taught four successive terms in the High School at Hondo, Texas, and two at Tioga, Texas. She was married to J. D. Burgin Dec. 24, 1899. She professed a hope early in life, and united with Zion Primitive Baptist church near Devine, Texas, after an able sermon preached by the late Elder S. F. Cayce of Martin, Tenn., on Friday before the second Sunday in June, 1903, was baptized the next day and went into the communion service and lived a devoted member the balance of her life. We know our loss is her eternal gain, yet it is hard to give her up. Knowing that Christ doeth all things well, I humbly hope to meet my dear wife where we can join our never tiring voices in perfect praise to Jesus, sweet Jesus. She was all to me that a companion could be. It was said of us that we were foolishly devoted to each other, and that we would not live long together. It was one continuous love feast from first acquaintance till her death. A few days before she died she said she did not think she would live long, said she was ready to go but hated to leave me and as I would burst into tears she would try to comfort me and gave me good advice. Said she wished we could go at the same time. The last plain words she said were, "Goodbye, darling, I am gone." Oh, that I bad at my command of language strong enough to express and portray some of the noble traits and loveable Characteristics of my darling wife.. All that a host of neighbors and friends and three physicians could do was done, but the Lord's will, not ours, must and will be done. I miss her here, I miss her there, at church, at home, abroad and everywhere. Her remains were followed from our home to Lone Star church, Tioga, by a large concourse of neighbors and friends, and after a funeral discourse by Elder J. G. Webb, was laid to rest in the Tioga cemetery, to wait the resurrection mom. May the Lord bless little Ruth, Cynthia and Winnie, and all the bereaved ones everywhere, and 0 God, will thou remember the lonely, broken hearted writer. J. D. Burgin Referring to the above, I wish to say that I have never known a more devoted Christian than Sister Burgin. She was blessed with a fine mind, well cultivated, and besides this she was blessed with an abundance of God's grace, and while she was educated and refined, yet she was one of the most humble Christians I ever know, and while Brother and Sister Burgin were very devoted to each other, they were always ready to make others happy. They loved their church and unless providentially hindered always filled their seats at church. We miss our dear sister at church, at our homes and everywhere but while we feel our loss, we are sure that our loss is her eternal gain and desire to bow in humble submission to the will of the Lord, hoping that when the turmoils of this life are over that we too shall enter into that glorious rest above, where our dear sister is now resting in the arms of Jesus. May the Lord deal tenderly with our dear Brother Burgin, who is left to mourn the absence of his beloved companion, and may He bless all the bereaved ones and prepare them to meet in an unbroken family around the throne of God.

Mrs. James L. (Vivian Hastings) Culpepper recorded the following the following from a tombstone in the Mt.       Since a baby daughter, "Little Blanche Baucum" who was born and died 15 Aug 1892, was buried with Blanche, Vivian speculated that Blanche "probably died from complications after child birth...." Baucom researcher Sandra Vossler confirms this. Mrs. C. M. (Pat Burgin) Lee wrote 2 Nov 1994: According to Marie [Burgin, a granddaughter of Daniel and Zilpha] Blanche Culpepper Baucom was a real cut-up & a happy-go-lucky person. She died after the birth of her first child.

Census*1910 He was listed as a resident in the census report at Bosque Co., Texas, in 1910.
Death*16 July 1945 He died at Walnut Springs, Bosque Co., Texas, on 16 July 1945 at age 78.
Biography* A daughter-in-law, Mrs. J. M. (Zetha M. Estein) Baucom wrote the following entry (F76) which appeared in Bosque County: Land and People published by the Bosque County Historical Commission: BAUCOM, RUFUS ISAAC Rufus Isaac Baucom (1867-1945) was born to John Moses Baucom (1833-1917) and Luci Jane Culpepper (1835-1919) in 1867 in Perry County, Tennessee. In the middle 1880's, he moved with his family to an area called Sweet Home, Texas, near Shiner in Lavaca County, Texas. During his early years he farmed in Lavaca County and in 1889 [read 1899 per Lavaca Co., TX marriage records], married Mary Leah Culpepper [(1873-1957) daughter of William R. Culpepper] (1829-1906) and Julia Ann Haynes (1835-1911). [Lavaca Co., TX marriage records and cemetery records show that Rufus Isaac Baucom had previously married Blanche Culpepper in 1891. She died a year later possibly as a result of complications of childbirth since a few days before she died she had given birth to a daughter who was born and died on the same day.] Later, the family moved to Coleman County where they farmed and ranched for a few years. In a couple of years following this move, the family settled one mile north of Walnut Springs, Texas. As was the custom during this era, with each move they also had Mrs. Baucom's parents and an old maid sister, Mattie Culpepper, to look after and care for. [In fact, Mattie would have been twenty years old when her older sister, Mary Leah, married Rufus Isaac Baucom. Their father, William R. Culpepper, died in 1906 and their mother, Julia Ann (Haynes) Culpepper, died in 1911. According to Dr. Charles Lee Culpepper, Sr.'s records, Mattie Culpepper married J. G. Grant. Apparently a sister of Rufus Isaac Baucom was also living in the household.] Following his sister's death in 1909, Rufus Isaac Baucom and his wife, Mary Leah later purchased a farm one and a half miles west of Walnut Springs, in 1911, which is still today called the "Old Baucom Homeplace." For the last twenty-eight years, the farm has been owned and operated by his son, John Moses Baucom and wife, Zetha M. Estein Baucom. Of this marriage were born the following children: Bonnie Faye Baucom Mounce (1900-1973); Susie Lee Baucom Mounce (1904-); Josephine Baucom (1907-1929); John Moses Baucom (19O9-); Mattie Bernice Baucom Cousin (1912-); Rufus Eugene Baucom (1916-). Rufus Isaac Baucom was a true farmer having raised his family solely on the fruits of the land. The children became acutely aware of this fact when the local bank was forced to close, having been declared insolvent and unable to liquidate its assets to satisfy the demand for depositor's cash and savings. Despite having lost what little money the family had on deposit in the bank, Mr. Baucom never lost sight of the basic values of faith, sound morals and principles by which the family lived. Through his determination and dedication to provide for the family's welfare, he sold homemade butter, honey by the quart and half gallon, eggs and raised a large garden to provide needed vegetables for a large family. Relying partially on the farm and the help of neighbors, he was able to support his family and see each of his children graduate from Walnut Springs High School. Beginning in 1910 and for several years thereafter, he served as a trustee on the Walnut Springs Public School District. While serving on the Board of Trustees, he recalled occasions when he would interview prospective teachers seeking employment. In each instance, Mr. Baucom would always ask the applicant if they were a Christian and if they would attend church on a regular basis. Mr. Baucom's philosophy was simple, yet complex. His legacy has been passed down to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and hopefully is still being practiced today. He firmly believed that each individual should pursue only the highest level of principles and moral values in their daily lives. Through hard work and determination, despite life's obstacles, each individual had an equal opportunity to succeed in life.

The following notice of the death of Benjamin Franklin Culpepper appeared in the Shiner Gazette 2 Feb 1898, in an article about Ben's grandfather, Francis G. Culpepper: There have been few deaths in the [Francis G. Culpepper] family. Of the grandchildren [of Francis G. Culpepper], we know of but one, that of Ben F., son of John T. J. Culpepper. One morning nearly two years ago, all Lavaca county was shocked by the news that tax collector Ben Culpepper had killed himself at Halletsville [sic]. Everbody mourned him as he was a general favorite and was generally spoken of as the most popular man in Lavaca county. He had held the office of tax collector for years and could have held it as long as he lived. No reason has ever been assigned for his rash act.
