Biography* | Martha was known as "Annie" or "Miss Annie." Her brother, Dr. Charles L. Culpepper, Sr. referred to her in a 4 Jul 1978 letter as "Martha Ann" but her name in her obituary was "Martha Anne." Mrs. J. M. (Mary Hunt) Mills wrote 16 Jan 1979: Mother died suddenly, of a heart attack, on Nov. 11, 1978. She was 88 years old on May 19th, 1978. God gave her good health for these many years, and she was such a blessing to her family, friends and to the little rural church and community where she and Daddy lived. They had been married 61 yrs. last August 19th.... The following obituary appeared in the Kenedy Advance for Nov 1978: Services for Mrs. M. Hunt Mrs. Martha Anne Hunt of Choate passed away in the Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital on Saturday, November 11, 1978 at the age of 88 years, five months and 22 days. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Eckols Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Charles Woodward officiated and the burial was in the Choate Cemetery. Pall bearers were Thomas Baker, J. E. Baker, W. C. Hunt, Luther Hunt, Gene Rice and Glynn Frazier. Mrs. Hunt was born on May 19, 1890 at Sweet Home Texas the daughter of John T. J. and Mary C. Curington Culpepper Sr. She married Marshall Hunt in Floresville August 19, 1917. A housewife, she had lived in Choate since 1914 and was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; Marshall Hunt of Choate; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Mills of Houston; two sons, Truett Hunt of Kenedy and David B. Hunt of Victoria; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Frank Bukoviny of Uvalde; and a brother, Dr. Charles L. Culpepper of San Antonio. 15 Nov 1988, Mary Beth Hunt Mills, Annie's daughter, wrote a short biography for Culpepper Heritage Association records: Martha Anne Culpepper was born on May 19, 1890 in Lavaca Co., Texas, near the rural community of Sweet Home, the settlement begun by her grandfather, Francis Gillespie Culpepper, and his family. Martha Anne was the fourth child born to John Thomas Jefferson Culpepper and his second wife, Mary Caroline Curington Culpepper. She was called "Annie." When Annie was 12, her father died. Soon after that her mother moved her family to a ranch in Wilson Co., Texas, which her husband had bought before his death. During one or more of her teenage years Annie stayed with her older half sister, Hattie, and her husband, Bob Key, who lived three miles from Floresville Texas, and rode horse back to Floresville to school. Later, Annie's mother sold the ranch and moved to Floresville, so that the younger children would be close to school. Annie attended San Marcos Baptist Academy when it opened its doors for the first time in San Marcos, Texas, in the fall of 1908. Later she attended the teacher training school in San Marcos, known then as San Marcos Normal School. That school is now the Southwest Texas State University. When Annie received her teacher's certificate she became known as "Miss Annie." She taught in rural schools in Wilson and Karnes Counties. On Sunday afternoon, August 19, 1917, "Miss Annie" was married to Robert Marshall Hunt, of the Choate Community in the south part of Karnes Co. The wedding was held in Annie's mother's home in Floresville. Marshall and his family traveled by train to Floresville from Kenedy, a distance of thirty miles, for the wedding. Marshall and Annie lived in the Choate Community, nine miles south of Kenedy, Texas. They had been married more than sixty-one years when Annie died on Nov. 11, 1978. They spent all those years near the place of Marshall's birth. Not far to the southwest of their home is a hill which Marshall said was known as Pilot Knob, the highest point in that area. It was used as a landmark during the early days of Texas in the time of the long cattle drives. Marshall and Annie worked hard throughout their lives and made a significant contribution to the life of the community through their participation in church, Choat Baptist, and school work. |

Biography* | Dr. C. L. Culpepper, Sr. signed his name as "Charlie Culpepper." In a 14 Mar 1975 letter to Mrs. J. L. (Vivian Hastings) Culpepper, Mrs. D. W. (Lavyn Wright) Sisco wrote: When we were in Plainview, Dr. C. L. spoke at First Baptist. I'm not Baptist, however, I went to the lecture and met him. In a 4 Oct 1975 letter to Mrs. J. L. Culpepper, Mrs. Sisco added that "Dr. C. L. Culpepper of San Antonio" had done extensive research on the Francis Gillespie Culpepper family. In an attempt to preserve the information that Dr. Culpepper had collected, a grandson, Tom Culpepper, set up the Culpepper Association which holds regular reunions of Francis G. Culpepper descendants and is attempting to create a machine readable record of the family. In a 28 Aug 1978 letter, Mrs. James L. (Vivian Hastings) Culpepper noted: Miss Annie [Mrs. R. M. (Martha Anne Culpepper) Hunt] told me that her brother Charlie is still in Memphis teaching Bible at a Baptist College. She also said they would soon have to replace him as he is getting very feeble. He had taught several years there, with no salary, he wanted it this way, until they could find a permanent instructor. So they never found anyone to fill the job. He told me the one time I visited him that he had done no research, just put down what kinfolks told him. 16 May 1979, a Carolyn Culpepper Missions Room was dedicated at the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary to the memory Charles Lee Culpepper, Sr.'s daughter and the following information was included in the program: The Culpeppers [the Charles Lee Culpepper family] were appointed to China in 1923. Dr. Culpepper served as President of the North China Baptist Theological Seminary from 1931 to 1942 and President of the All-China Seminary in Shanghai from 1946 to 1949. Dr. and Mrs. Culpepper were a part of the great "Shantung Revival" during the years 1931 to 1945. Dr. Culpepper was arrested in 1941 after the Pearl Harbor attack and held for eight months and then repatriated in September, 1942. When the Communists took over in China, Dr. and Mrs. Culpepper and their children were transferred to Hong Kong where Dr. Culpepper served as treasurer of the Hong Kong Baptist Mission. He was involved in helping to get Southern Baptists out of Communist territory. They transferred to Taiwan in 1952 to help set up the Taiwan Baptist Theological Seminary and remained there with the seminary until retirement. Since retirement from the Foreign Missions Board, they have been kept extremely busy with Bible classes, conferences, revivals, etc. The Culpepper's two remaining children are both missionaries of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Mary Walker serves in Japan, and Charles, Jr., serves in Taiwan. At the present time, Dr. Culpepper is Distinguished Professor at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. and Mrs. Culpepper maintain their home in San Antonio, Texas, with residence in Memphis during the school term. In "A new seminary for a new day" a brochure for the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, C. L. Culpepper was listed: CHARLES L. CULPEPPER, SR., Distinguished Professor of Missions and Theology Th.M. and Th.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Served as pastor of Southern Baptist churches for several years. Served as missionary to China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong under F. M. B. of S. B. C. for 42 years. Author of two books in English and several books and papers in Chinese. Dr. Charles L. Culpepper, Sr. wrote 4 Jul 1978: My wife and I went ot China as missionaries under the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, in 1923. We retired in 1965, after serving in China, Hong-Kong, and Taiwan, for 42 years. My wife and I had three children, Charles L. Jr. 1920, Carolyn 1924, who died in China in 1928, Mary Frances, 1926, who married Rev. W. L. Walker, are in Japan, they had three children. The oldest, Carol married Fred Smith, and they are living in Charlotte N. C. Charles Jr. married Donal Jones, and they have four children, Tom, 32, Carolyn 30, Richard 38, and Cathy 23, all of them are married. We have three great grandchildren. Since retiring I have been traveling all over the U. S. holding Revivals, Bible conferences, and Deeper Life conferences. For the last three years I have been teaching part time in the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis, Tenn. Last year my wife and I stayed in Memphis and I taught full time. We intend to go back in Aug. 20th and will be there for the full school year. Culpepper Heritage Association records note: Dr. Charles L. Culpepper, Sr. was a Baptist missionary in China for 42 years. He went to China in 1923 and was briefly interned by the Japanese in 1941 before he was repatriated to the United States. He returned to China at the end of WW II and a few years later moved his operations to Taiwan after the Chinese Communist gained control of the government. "Pau Pau", as his grandchildren called him, died at the age of 91, after a long illness from heart failure. He graduated from Baylor University in 1919. He married his wife, Ola Lane, on September 17, 1919, and she accompanied him to the Southwester Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he graduated in 1922. The next year they were appointed to China by the Southern Baptist Foreign Board. Their first assignment was in the Shantung Province in northern China at an established mission. His main duties soon developed into work at seminaries and during his overseas service he served as President over three seminaries in China and Taiwan. As war threatened in 1930 he found his mission in Japanese occupied territory. Although the US was still a neutral country, he and several other missionaries were taken under house arrest. His wife, son, and daughter had earlier returned to the US, and he was subsequently returned to the US. He returned to China in early 1945 and served as liaison/interpreter between US and Chinese troops. Communist forces filtered down the length of the country and he moved to Hong Kong, then Taiwan. His son and daughter were missionaries also, CLC Jr. to China and Mary to Japan.9 |

Biography* | Dr. Charles L. Culpepper, Sr. wrote 6 Jul 1979: My wife was at a W. M. U. meeting in Arkansas last Oct. 27th and fell and broke her hip. She was brought to Memphis to the Baptist Hospittal and there the doctor operated and put pins in her hip. She was in the hospital for two weeks, and then in the home of a friend for a week, then we took her to our apartment near the Seminary. She has gotten along fine and was using a walker in about a month. The doctor kept her on it for six months, now she gets along all right with a cane. Mrs. C. L. (Ola Lane) Culpepper wrote 17 Mar 1980: I have (when I'm not in the hospital) a Bible class once a week here in one apt. for a few of the people who live in this high rise. I've had another class in a home, but since I've been out so much I urged her to get someone else & she has. In Culpepper Heritage Association records, Tom S. Culpepper noted that "MauMau died 8/29/1989 in Tyler, Texas while in the Clairmont Rest Home near the Tyler Jr. College" and he included two obituaries, one from the Baptist Standard 20 Sep 1989: Ola Culpepper, 93, Aug. 29 in Tyler. She and her late husband, Charles, were missionaries to China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan for more than 41 years. She was a native of Center Point and a graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Southwestern Seminary. Her two children and one of her seven grandchildren served as missionaries. The second obituary appeared in the San Antonio Express-News Area Obituaries for 2 Sep 1989: CULPEPPER SERVED FAR EAST MISSIONS - Ola Lane Culpepper was a Southern Baptist missionary with her husband, Charles L. Culpepper, for 42 years. They were appointed together to China in 1923 and were stationed in such places as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan before retiring in 1965. She died Tuesday at age 93 in Tyler, where she moved last fall from San Antonio to be near her daughter. Born in Center Point, Culpepper was the youngest of seven children. After graduating from high school there, she attended Mary Hardin-Baylor College. On Sept. 17, 1919, she and her husband exchanged wedding vows in Center Point. They attended Southwest -ern Seminary together in Fort Worth. There son, Charles L. Culpepper, Jr. of Blanco, was born while she was at the seminary. Although he was only three, her son said he remembers their first trip to China in 1923. "The trip was stormy," he said. "This was the time of the Yokohama earthquake and our ship hit the tital wave. "My parents studied the laguage in Old Peking (Beijing). My two sisters were born over there, but one died. We moved to another station in Shanghai. In the late 1930s, the Japanese war was brewing and my mother and the children were sent back to the United States. "Dad was taken by the Japanese and was under house arrest for eight or nine months before being swapped for Japanese civilians taken by the Americans in 1943." The family then stayed in San Antonio. The returned to Shanghai after the war ended. When the Communists took over in China, the Culpeppers became missionaries in Hong Kong in 1950. In 1952 they were sent to Taiwan, and their son was later a missionary there with them. The Culpeppers retired in Taiwan in 1965 and returned to their San Antonio home. He worked with the evangelism department of his church and taught two years at Mid-America Seminary in Memphis, Tenn. His wife accompanied him in these endeavors, working with women and speaking about foreign missions in many churches, their son said. "My mother was very vivacious and out going and was a good balance for dad, who was quieter with a more serious demeanor," he said. "My wife and I were missionaries on the Chinese mainland and my sister and her husband were missionaries in Japan." When Culpepper Sr. died in 1986, the son looked after his mother in San Antonio. When his sister retired, she lived in a duplex with their mother until they moved to Tyler last fall. Other survivors are her daughter, Mary C. Walker of Tyler; seven grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. Services will be in San Antonio at 11 a. m. Saturday in Sunset Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. |

Terry Wheeler Culpepper
M, (5 June 1900 - 14 April 1903)
Father | John Thomas Jefferson Culpepper (9 Aug 1827 - 1 Aug 1902) |
Mother | Mary Caroline Currington (3 Sep 1858 - 23 Apr 1930) |
Birth* | 5 June 1900 | Terry was born at Lavaca Co., Texas, on 5 June 1900.1 |
Death* | 14 April 1903 | He died at Dewees, Wilson Co., Texas, on 14 April 1903 at age 2.1 |
Burial* | circa 15 April 1903 | His body was interred circa 15 April 1903 at Dewees Cemetery, Dewees, Wilson Co., Texas.1 |
Biography* | Culpepper Heritage Association records preserved the following written 7 Apr 1989 by Mary Beth Mills: Terry was named after his father's Civil War commanding officers (Terry & Wheeler). He [Terry] took diptheria, called membranous croup in those days, and died. There was an anti-toxin for it, and Aunt Addie's husband, Charlie Patton, rode horseback to the train station and went by train to San Antonio for the medicine, but it was too late when he was able to return. Their family doctor, Dr. Blake, stayed all night the little boy died. His grave was the first in the cemetery located on the left side of the road just east of the Dewees store. That is 7 miles from Poth. The grave itself is in the southwest corner, near the fence, and there is a small marker, shaped like a portion of a tree trunk, with a little lamb atop it. The engraved words were hard to read, but with the aid of chalk, they became legible: _____Terry Wheeler, Little Son of _____J. T. J. Culpepper & M. C. Culpepper _____Born June 5, 1900 Died Apr. 14, 1903 _____Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, _____From which none ever wake to weep. The cemetery is well tended, has a good chain link fence, and appears to be in use. There do not seem to be any other Culpepper graves or death dates earlier than Terry Wheeler's. |

Biography* | Mrs. R. (Joyce Culpepper) Organ referred in a 28 Jul 1978 letter to Cornelius as "Uncle Necie." Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton wrote 10 Jul 1889 that she had located a "Delayed Birth Certificate" for C. V. Culpepper in Lavaca Co., TX: Cornelius Vanderbuilt Culpepper____b. 20 Apr 1880 _____to Franklin Olin Culpepper of Shiner _____and Eliza Jane Richardson_____b. Ala. _____2 children 2 living Mrs. C. V. (Lois Anderson) Culpepper wrote 1 Jul 1978: Cornelius died August 5, 1972 of heart failure at the age of 92. He was the last member of his family - all having preceded him in death.... Cornelius was a fine Christian man and a wonderful family man. He lived up to the reputation of the Culpepper name - honest in every detail and paid his debts. We had no children of our own. We adopted a little six weeks old baby boy [Claude Brotherton Culpepper who according to Mrs. R. (Joyce Culpepper) Organ in a 28 Jul 1978 letter was the son of Cully Brotherton of Comstock, Texas] whose mother died at his birth. He married and they had two boys and one girl - all took the Culpepper name. They have grown up to be lovely children. They have married and I now have four "great" grandchildren, all girls.... The following was a school assignment apparently written by Claude B. Culpepper, the adopted son of C. V. and Lois Culpepper: A Character Sketch of a Member of My Family The character I want to sketch is an unusual character. The community would not say as much. It would say he is a very ordinary person. Its opinion would be based on the fact that he lives a very ordinary life. He makes his living in a very ordinary way. His family is apparently as normal as the average family. He is regular in his church attendance. He pays his honest debts. His integrity is unquestioned. His influence in his community is that of an honorable and upright citizen. He has not accomplished any deeds of heroism, nor has his name been immortalized. From the casual observer his life is regular and routine. But to those who know him intimately he is most unusual. As a family man he is exceptional. The first characteristic that attracts you to him is his gentleness. Few mothers are more gentle than he. He is never too tired nor too busy to consider any need or wish of his family. He seems to forget himself completely in his thoughtfulness of others. He is always interested in their affairs and well-being. His own wishes and desires are held in abeyance until he is sure no one wishes otherwise. His unselfishness is unusual and his manner is so unobtrusive. When he performs unselfish acts for others, he leaves the feeling that he is just doing the natural thing. In fact, to please others seems the natural thing for him. His love for children is unusual. Children delight to be with him. He romps and plays with them. He has dolls and toys around the house waiting for a birthday or special occasion to give a gift to some little boy or girl. His appreciation of the asthetic is unusual. He loves anything pretty whether it be art, music, poetry or the great outdoors. He finds beauty in the little flower of the field and in the great sturdy oak. He appreciates the little horned toad that eats the ants and insects in the garden. He has been seen to spare the life of a harmless spiders that eat flyes and mosquitoes. He has studied their habits and characteristics and enjoys helping them carry on in their own world. He loves animals. He loves his horse and dogs and made friends of them almost equal to the friendship of a fellow-being. "For as he thinketh in his heart so is he." (Proverbs 23:7) Yes, to those who know him intimately he is most unusual. And this unusual person is none other than the husband and father of our home. |
