Biography* Obituary:
Naomi Claire Leonard Culpepper died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at her home in Orange, Texas, after a lifetime of devotion to her family and community. She was 96. Naomi was born May 11, 1908 in Arlie, Texas in the Texas Panhandle to John Stanton Leonard and Elizabeth Bayliss Hays Leonard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Quillon Benton ("Q.B.") Culpepper, Sr., her mother and father, her four siblings, and one of her great-grandchildren, Zachary Broadway.
Naomi, known affectionately to her family as "Nomi", is survived by her two children and their spouses: Nancy Claire Culpepper Johnson and her husband, Jack, of Georgetown, Texas, and Quillon Benton ("Ben") Culpepper, Jr. and his wife, Gloria, of Orange, Texas; six grandchildren: Diane Johnson Broadway of Austin, Texas; David Johnson of Bangladesh; Beth Culpepper Turley of Beaumont, Texas; Chris Culpepper of Orange, Texas; Susan Culpepper of Round Rock, Texas; and Andrew Culpepper of Austin, Texas; and seven great-grandchildren: Krista Broadway, Claire Broadway, Jacob Broadway, Isaac Johnson, Naomi Johnson, Michael Johnson, and Jill Turley.
In her childhood years, Naomi and her family moved in a covered wagon from Arlie, Texas to San Marcos, Texas and later to Alvin, Texas, where she graduated from high school as Salutatorian. Although she was accepted to The Rice Institute in Houston, there were no dormitories for women there in 1925, so Naomi borrowed $500.00 in order to attend The University of Texas at Austin. She later earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from the University of Houston.
On August 25, 1929, Naomi married Q.B. Culpepper, and they relocated to Glidden, Texas, where Q.B. served as Superintendent of the school district and Naomi taught first and second grades. After two years, the couple moved to Mauriceville, Texas, where they served in similar capacities for nine years. In 1940, Naomi and Q.B. moved to Spurger, Texas and served in the school district there until 1942 when they came to Orange, Texas to join the war effort. Q.B. worked in the engineering department of Consolidated Steel in Orange, while Naomi reared two children and substituted as a first-grade teacher at West Orange Elementary. In 1946, Naomi accepted a full-time position teaching first grade at Anderson Elementary in Orange, Texas. She later moved to Jones Elementary in Orange and then retired as a teacher from Bancroft Elementary in Orange in 1973, after a teaching career of more than 42 years during which she taught hundreds of first-grade children not only how to read and write, but important lessons of values and virtues for success in life. She enjoyed reminiscing about her teaching career during her retirement years and often encountered former students who remembered her with fondness and appreciation.
Naomi was a long-time, faithful member of First Baptist Church, where she taught children's Sunday School and later taught a senior ladies' Sunday School class. Her years of service to Orange include service to the local hospital as a Gray Lady, membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional organization for teachers, lifetime membership in the Texas State Teachers Association, and service as a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Orange Golden K. She was the recipient of a Proclamation from City of Orange Mayor Brown Claybar in May 2003, in recognition of her 95th birthday. Naomi and Q.B. celebrated 66 years of marriage in August 1995, prior to Q.B.'s death on January 12, 1996. She lived a quiet, yet extraordinary life devoted to family, friends, church and home. This was a life well lived and well loved, and she will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be celebrated Friday, June 11, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Orange, Texas, with burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens under the direction of Claybar Funeral Home. Pallbearers will include Chris Culpepper, Andrew Culpepper, Lee Turley, Mac Broadway, Don Ball and John Martin. Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday evening, June 10, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Claybar Funeral Home, 504 N. 5th St., Orange, Texas. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Nomi to First Baptist Church of Orange, Texas Faith for the Future Building Fund, P.O. Box 1453, Orange, Texas 77631. Nomi's family expresses their appreciation for the faithful care giving service of Dorothy Elliott, Charlotte Gonzales and Velma Amodeo. "Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, by the power of the Holy Spirit." Obituary*21 June 2016 Richard Allan Culpepper, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, departed this world on June 15, 2016. Richard was born on September 13, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, to parents Henry Allan Culpepper and Madge Moore Culpepper. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School where he met his lifelong love, Nancy. They were married on June 17, 1950, at Woodlawn Methodist Church.

Richard began work at Culpepper Cleaners, a business his father had started in 1911. His wife, Nancy, later joined him in working at the family business which they ran for many years. Eventually they sold the business to their son and daughter-in-law, Jess B. Culpepper and JoAnne Boone Culpepper, and to their daughter and son-in-law, Terri Culpepper Walker and Mickey Walker, Jr.

Richard was a hard-working and energetic man, who also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and possessed a wealth of knowledge about the outdoors. He and Nancy purchased their ranch in Quihi, Medina County, Texas in 1971, and moved there permanently in 1974. They quickly came to love their new community and were active in their church, New Fountain United Methodist Church.

Richard and Nancy owned a home near Rockport, Texas, where they loved taking family and friends fishing.

In his later years he became interested in woodworking and built a woodworking shop at his ranch. He designed and built many beautiful pieces of furniture, as well as wooden crosses, almost all of which he generously gave to family and friends.

Richard loved farming and ranching. Although he said he was going to sell all of his cattle at the end of the year, no one really believed that would happen. He was also a Mason, and a member of the Quihi New Fountain Historical Society.

Last October Richard fulfilled a lifelong dream when he and Nancy made a journey to Idaho on an elk hunt, where he shot a 1000 pound elk, endowing his family with freezers full of elk meat.

On June 15, 2016, Richard and Nancy embarked on a trip to Cabo San Lucas to celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary. The trip was to mark the occasion of their many years of a happy marriage with marlin fishing for Richard and shopping for Nancy as the planned activities. They perished on the beach in Cabo San Lucas in each other's hands in a drowning accident that same day and are now celebrating with their Savior and Lord in eternal peace and happiness.

Survivors include three children: son Ben Allan Culpepper and wife Joy O. Culpepper; son Jess Bryan Culpepper and wife JoAnne Culpepper; daughter Terri Culpepper Walker and husband Mickey Walker, Jr; six grandchildren: Luke Allan Culpepper and wife Lindsey Culpepper; Ross Garrett Culpepper; Ethan Boone Culpepper; Jessica Isabel Culpepper; Andrew Venoy Walker; Georgia Alison Walker; and three great-grandchildren: Chase Allan Culpepper; Bryce Thomas Culpepper and Kylie Ann Culpepper.

Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home, 2006 Avenue M, Hondo, TX 78861. The funeral service will be on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at 10:00 A.M. at New Fountain United Methodist Church, 2980 FM 2676, Hondo, TX (Quihi) 78861....with interment in the New Fountain Cemetery across the street.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to New Fountain United Methodist Church.4
