Biography* | | Stephen Patrick Henry Green was the fourth of eight children and he was born in "The Old Home," the Green family home, in what would become known as Flatrock near Almond to the west of what is now Wadley, AL.1 His parents came to Alabama from Georgia and they purchased 160 acres of land which a Mr. Everette had bought from the government in 1847.1 "The Old Home," which came with the land, was some distance from the Malone Road and was made out of hewed logs and had four rooms and a front porch and a fireplace made out of flat rock.1
Lela and Patrick married in 1890 and, on October 17, 1897, after his parents had both died, Patrick bought "The Old Home" and this is where Lela and Patrick settled down to raise their family.1 Lela wrote about her husband and their home:1
There was Several beautiful Small Streams on the Place beautiful woods a lot of different Kinds of Timber. Oh it was a Lovely Place. Could See the Dear old Church Home from our Home. Handy to Store, Mill, Gin. We used to make a good Living.
Staid out of Debt all our married Life he always told me about every Trade he made or planned to make in fact we went 50=50 in all our business always went to Church and S S [Sunday School] with our Children tried to Set good examples before them to be Honest and Truthful in all their dealings but they had to work yet he was always Kind and nice to them he was Firm with them but Considerate in all his dealings. Was a good Provider a good business man a good Father good Husband and Friend. Always looking to the Future for his family. He Loved Life as well as any Person I have ever Known. He use to Say be Sure you are right then go ahead. He was very Calm and very Considerate in most things. Oh how we use to love to Sit and talk after the day's work was done and Plan how to manage for the best every way.
Then in 1917 our two Sons were drafted for the World War. They Staid in the Service 2 years one year over Seas that was a very Sorrowful uneasy 2 years we Spent but we worked made all we Could and Saved all we Could. Then the Happy Day Came when the war ended the 11 day of Nov 1918 and oh how our Troubled hearts rejoyced when the good News Came the war was ended, we rejoyced with all our hearts and longed for the Dear boys to come home from over Seas. We Trusted in our dear Father in Heaven and He had Compassion on us as unworthy as we are and our Darling Sons Came home in May and June in 1919 that was a Great relief and a happy time when we received the Children all Safely at their Childhood Home again. Praise God for all His goodness to us.
Then they Married I and my Companion were left like we started but we worked right on for our Selves and others as well. We enjoyed the Children to come on their Vacation always Worked to have Water Mellons Plenty of Garden Stuff Milk and butter. Oh how we enjoyed those Happy days.
But all these Happy days came to an end on the 7th day of May 1940 when my Dear Companion slipped away and left me So unexpected. Without Him I have almost been Lost with no one to Lean on and Talk with like I Could talk with him for I Could always depend on him in every way he understood me and I did him for almost 50 years. No wonder I feel Lost without Such an earthly Friend. Here we have no Continual City but we Seek one to Come. So let me be Patient a few more days or years but oh I get So lonely sometimes without my other half.... |

Biography* | | According to the death certificate State Registrar's No. 6073, John Washington Culpepper was a retired barber. He had retired in 1930 and was living at 2522 N. 26th Avenue, Birmingham, AL which appears to have been the address of his son, Nathan Gamble Culpepper. John Washington Culpepper died at his son's residence, at 1:00 p.m., of Pulmonary Tuberculosis which he had suffered from for more than a year. Information for the death certificate came from Nathan Gamble Culpepper, a son, who listed listed the mother of John Washington Culpepper as "Mary Herron" but Harris County, GA records show that Nathan F. Culpepper obtained a license to marry Sarah T. Herren, 21 Apr 1858. No later marriage record has been found and Nathan F. Culpepper was killed in the Civil war, so it is probable that John Washington Culpepper's mother was Sarah Tabitha Herren. The death certificate also lists John W. Culpepper's place of birth as Alabama, again based on information from a son, Nathan Gamble Culpepper. But according to researcher, William R. Wreford, in a 14 Jul 1989 letter, another son, Alvin Comer Culpepper, said that John W. Culpepper had been born at Shiloh, Harris Co, GA which would be the same county where the marriage license was obtained and where the family appears to have been living during the 1860 census. |

Biography* | | I am searching for any information about my grandfather John Wesley HELMS who was estranged from my family when I was just a small boy in the late 1930s. He was supposed to have had siblings including a half brother in the Elmore Co. area. The last reported sighting of him was in Prattville Ala. where it is believed that he died in the late 1960s. He was married to Josephine CULPEPPER and they produced twin boys Lester Horace HELMS (my father) and Chester Forace HELMS both born on sept 15 1904. They also had the following daughters Katherine, Ruby, Jeanette and Pearl. I believe my Aunt Jeanette used to visit an uncle in Elmore Co. and referred to him as uncle Estes. The reason for this query is I am trying to tie into my great grandfather who I believe to be Jefferson Davis HELMS Source: John D. Helms, [email protected], Feb 1998. |
