.... this picture was taken at the Bradford homeplace. In 1906 my grandfather purchased the farm SE of Pine Forest. The house was old and cold and had a hall [breezeway] down the middle. My mother was never sure if she was born here or on the farm my grandfather rented when he came to Texas. The rented farm was located near the Mr. Frank Adams place north of Pine Forest. At that time in history folk could go east, cross Stouts Creek and come out at the Luther Culpepper farm. That road has long been closed.

The family moved to the newly purchased farm of 72 acres and we know for sure Guy, Aubrey and Mattie were born at this location. In 1916 James Bradford built a new house where this old house once stood.

In the Picture is Hurley and Alice Bradford Richey (Hurley is holding baby, Ruby), Leona, Ida, Ruth, Frankie, Robbie, Argent, GGM Argent Stephens Bradford Mosley, Nancy Bradford and James Cope Bradford holding Guy.1,2

Biography* Melvina Miriam Culpepper was the daughter of John Malcolm and Sarah Ann Elizabeth (Stephens) Culpepper. She was presumably named for two of John Malcolm Culpepper's sisters but she went by the name "Mattie Myra." She was born in Randolph Co., AL but, sometime after the 1880 census, her parents moved the family by wagon train to Grant Co., AR.

In 1892,3 Mattie Myra's parents took her and her younger brother along with her older brother, Luther, and went by train to Saltillo, Hopkins Co., TX4 where they settled down in the Pine Forest Community.

There Mattie Myra met and married Ed Minter and they are noted with their young family in the 1900 census of Hopkins Co., TX. Mrs. D. W. (Lavyn Wright) Sisco wrote5 that Ed "made sure his wife, Mattie, had a new dress or hat. She did enjoy looking nice even when she was a very old lady and was in poor health."

Ed died in 1921 when Mattie Myra was 45 years old. She died in 1958 at the age of 82.

Biography* Capos Conley Culpepper was the youngest son of John Malcolm and Sarah Ann Elizabeth (Stephens) Culpepper. A one year old "Capers C. Culpepper" was noted in the 1880 census of Beat 8 in Randolph Co., AL and this is where he is presumed to have been born. Beat 8 appears to have been in the vicinity of Flatrock, near Almond to the west of what is now known as Wadley, AL. The name "Capos" is unique and it is interesting to note that the name was recorded as "Capers" in the 1880 census record. A grandson who shares the name, Capos Conley "Chip" Culpepper, II, believes that "Capers," through transmission with a Southern accent, might have become "Capos." A cousin who was born in 1860 was named "Charles Capers Culpepper." He is supposed to have been named after a Methodist Bishop. Chip investigated this and he wrote:8

FYI William Capers ... was elected a Bishop in the Methodist & Episcopal Church in 1846. The next year, 1847, he was sent to be the first Bishop of the Church in of all places... Arkansas... Coincidence? I don't think so.... I now have a print of what appears to have been an old wood-cut portrait of the good Bishop. He looks rather like George Washington on a dollar bill (a bit more hair though).... One reference to him calls him "...that great messenger of the gospel to the slaves."

Sometime after the 1880 census, Cape's parents moved the family by wagon train to Grant Co., AR. Chip compiled a book, A Collection of Culpeppers 9 which focuses on the Capos Conley Culpepper family and in it 10 Chip notes that Cape was about six or seven when the family moved from Alabama to Arkansas and recalled "how the family landed by flatboat at Pine Bluff in Jefferson County, Arkansas after crossing the Mississippi."
In 1892,11 Cape's parents took him and his older sister, Melvina Miriam, accompanied by their older brother, Luther, and they went by train to Saltillo, Hopkins Co., TX 12 where they settled down in the Pine Forest Community. They were soon followed by the William "Billy" Jehu Culpepper family.

It was not long after this that Cape went back to Arkansas. Mrs. R. W. (Tommie Reeves) Smith, a William Jehu Culpepper family historian, passed on 13 a story that she had heard about Cape and Billy:

Capus came riding up to Billy's home on his horse. Billy's dog came out as usual and as always was barking and yipping at the horse's feet scaring the horse. Capus took a gun he had, reportedly only to scare the dog away but his aim was such on the moving horse that he shot the dog dead on the spot. History does not say what Billy's response was but Chip and I think it was about this time Capus probably decided that Texas wasn't quite big enough for both he and Billy.

Whatever the reason, Cape returned to Arkansas where he met Annie Atchley and they married in 1901. Cape brought his bride back to Texas but, based on birth states of their children noted in census records, they returned to Arkansas around 1905. Mrs. D. W. (Lavyn Wright) Sisco, a John Malcolm Culpepper family historian, wrote14 that Annie thought Texas was "a God Forsaken Country" and wanted to go back to Arkansas. In Arkansas, Cape became a law enforcement officer, eventually becoming Captain of the Pine Bluff Police Department.15

Chip wrote16 that Cape suffered a stroke and died a short time later on April 11, 1959 at the age of 80 years.

Biography* Malcolm Henry Luther Culpepper was the son of William Jehu and Emily Julia Ann Josephine (East) Culpepper.
According to Tommie Smith, "he was one of at least three of his siblings who developed Diabetes that plagued him a long time. His death in 1933 at the age of 44 no doubt was hastened by the disease. Most of his children were close to the age of his youngest sibling, Tessie Lee Sue Culpepper Reeves."
Mack was born and raised in Randolph Co., AL where he was noted with his parents in the 1880 census but probably near the Tallapoosa Co., AL border since the family apparently attended church in Daviston, AL.11

Around 1890, the family is believed to have moved to a farm in the Hurricane Creek area of Grant Co., AR and Mack would presumably have accompanied his parents.12 Unfortunately, the 1890 U. S. census records were burned. In the mid-1890's, Mack's parents moved again, this time to Hopkins Co., TX. Again, Mack appears to have accompanied his parents and this is apparently where he met Elba Louella McGill whom he married in 1899.

Mack and Elba appear to have settled down to farm and raise their family in Hopkins Co., TX and they were noted there in 1900 and 1910 census records. But, by the time of the 1920 census, the family had moved to Miller Co., AR. Mack died in 1933 at the age of 55.

Biography* John William Culpepper was the son of William Jehu and Emily Julia Ann Josephine (East) Culpepper. He was born and spent his early years in Randolph Co., AL where he was noted with his parents in the 1880 census but probably near the Tallapoosa Co., AL border since the family apparently attended church in Daviston, AL.12 Bill remembered going for mail as a boy on a public road near the water mill of Lum (Loamni) Stephens in Randolph Co., AL. The road crossed a rock that was at least a mile across.13

Around 1890, the family is believed to have moved to a farm in the Hurricane Creek area of Grant Co., AR and Bill would presumably have accompanied his parents.14 Unfortunately, the 1890 U. S. census records were burned. In the mid-1890's, Bill's parents moved again, this time to Hopkins Co., TX. Again, Bill appears to have accompanied his parents and this is apparently where he met Cora Agnes Williams whom he married in 1902.

Bill and Cora appear to have settled down to raise their family in Hopkins Co., TX and they were noted there in 1910 and 1920 census records. Bill died in 1970 at the age of 91.

From Tommie Reeves Smith, [email protected], Sep 2000:

"I honestly can't remember if I mentioned to you the church bell story in Pine Forest. I was reminded of it back in April when we had the dedication of the Cival War Marker for John Malcolm. The church that sits next to the cemetery is the Methodist Church. Many
Culpeppers have worshiped there through the years. The present sanctuary was built in 1957 when I was a teen. As it was being built with a steeple one of the laymen mentioned to John William Culpepper ( Billy and Josephine) that they needed to obtain a bell. Uncle Will Culpepper indicated that was no problem, that he had one. He presented the bell that had hung on the farm of Billy and Josephine Culpepper summoning the family for meals for years. The bell was hung in the steeple and remains there today. On the day of the dedication it was arranged that someone ring that bell for all to hear at precisely 2:00 P.M to start the ceremony. It was spine tingling for me and no doubt for other Culpepper descendants present."

Biography* Julia Eldora was the daughter of William Jehu and Emily Julia Ann Josephine (East) Culpepper. She was born too late to be noted with her parents in the 1880 census of the Louina Beat (now Wadley) in Randolph Co., AL but this is where she spent her early years. Around 1890, the family is believed to have moved to a farm in the Hurricane Creek area of Grant Co., AR and Julia would have presumably accompanied her parents there.4 Unfortunately, the 1890 U. S. census records were burned.
In the mid-1890's, Julia accompanied her parents as they moved again, this time to Hopkins Co., TX. This is probably where she met James Edmond Hux whom she married in 1902. The couple settled down to farm and raise their family in Hopkins Co., TX. Julia lost her husband of 53 years in 1956. Julia died in 1970 at the age of 89.

From Tommie Smith: They were young and to me looked so identical. I mentioned one time that I could not tell which one was which. My older sister, Edna Earl, in her wisdom said I could remember that if their names were listed alphabetically it would not be right. This meant that Clara faced us on the left and Carrie was on the right. This worked for me..2

Biography* Francis Davis Culpepper was the son of William Jehu and Emily Julia Ann Josephine (East) Culpepper. His parents were noted in the 1880 census of the Louina Beat (now Wadley) in Randolph Co., AL and this is probably where he spent his early years. Around 1890, the family is believed to have moved to a farm in the Hurricane Creek area of Grant Co., AR and Frank presumably accompanied his parents there.11 Unfortunately, the 1890 U. S. census records were burned. In the mid-1890's, Frank again accompanied his parents as they moved to Hopkins Co., TX and he appears with his parents in 1900 census records there.
.
In 1908, Frank married Nora McFarland and they settled down to farm and raise their family in Hopkins Co., TX. And this is where the couple was noted with their young family in 1910 and 1920 census records.
.
Frank had lived in Hopkins County for 12 years prior to his death in 1967 at the age of 82.

Biography* Mary Glanton was the daughter of William Jehu and Emily Julia Ann Josephine (East) Culpepper. She died in 1957 at the age of 69.
Mary Glanton was primarily called "Glant" and for some unknown reason some of her siblings called her "Chink". She was another of the serious diabetics in the family of William Jehu and Josephine East Culpepper. She married a minister, Jim McKinney who had sons by a previous marriage. On Christmas Day in 1955 she was found in a coma which led to her death on January 6, 1957. Glant was a tall lady. In fact, she was as tall as some of her brothers. She was not blessed with natural beauty but appeared to have abundant self-confidence and enjoyed dressing attractively. In her pictures she posed with the air and grace of modern models. She gave birth to no children and was a little uncertain about how to entertain children who were her guests. She did welcome them and show affection for them .
Mary G. Culpepper and James W. McKinney had no children but there were three step-sons, Morris, Lester and Calvin (or Cavin), who were sons of James W. McKinney by a previous marriage.

Biography* Robert Earl was the first child of William Jehu and Josephine East to be born in Hopkins County, Texas after their move from Arkansas. He married Ruth Johnson in 1914. Her sister, Lois Johnson married Earl's brother Carl Culpepper. By early 1940's he was employed by the post office in Richmond Texas. His almost yearly vacation was to return to Hopkins County and visit all his siblings and relatives. He had an impressive base voice and his only son, Fred, had a beautiful tenor voice. Sometime during the vacation they always joined with Earl's sister, Tessie Reeves and her family to sing gospel songs around the piano. The trips also included a visit to a local fishing hole with Earl's brother Will Culpepper

Earl loved to sing and sang for many years in the St John's Methodist Church Choir.8 Two of his favorite songs were "Just a Closer Walk" and "In the Garden."8 He also loved to fish and play dominoes.8 A granddaughter, Mrs. R. D. (Ranelle Schultz) Krejci, wrote:9

He especially liked playing with his brother Will and once with his brother George. His son-in-law, Emmit, played most with him and kept a running joke about whose "down" it was.

Ranelle added:9

[Earl] went to Disneyland in 1957 with the Emmit Schultz family and really enjoyed it! Loved looking up "almost lost" relatives and old friends. Delayed the trip to Disneyland by looking them up in almost every town they went through.

His favorite sayings were: "You'll never know where you're going until you know where you've been" and "If you can't say something nice about someone don't say anything."8

Earl died in 1964 at the age of 69.

Biography* A granddaughter, Mrs. R. D. (Ranelle Schultz) Krejci preserved 6 the following which was written by Mrs. Robert Earl (Ruth Johnson) Culpepper after their 50th Wedding Anniversary:

One Sunday morning on September 20, 1914, me and the only boy I ever loved, Earl, got into the buggy at 9:00 o'clock and drove to the home of Rev. Cunningham's and were married. My sister, Pearl, and Truman Allen were in another buggy beside us. We drove to the church at Bathel (Bethel). The preacher ask us to come stand at the front and let everyone come by and congratulate us. Then we drove to Julia and Ed's for lunch. After lunch, we went to a singing at Wood's Springs church. Then Mamma fixed supper for us and we went to church that night and came back and spent the night with Papa and Mamma. It was a happy day for us and we had many, many more happy days in that 50 years. If were to do over, I'd do the same thing--because I could have never loved any one else. I thank God for letting me find Earl and for letting me keep him for 50 years.

Ranelle added:

It is a very touching insight into a very personal moment of her life. It is surprising that she even chose to write this small bit as she was a very introverted, even-tempered lady that did not like to share privacy with anyone. "Nannie" didn't hold much stock in ancestry. She always said that she was a direct descendant of R E Lee, but we haven't been able to verify. She always said, when asked, "Aw, Hon. If I'd a known someone would be interested I'd a paid more attention."
