Obituary* | 23 January 2003 | Joyce A. Culpepper Cobb passed away in Dallas Texas, at the age of 82 years young on Jan. 22, 2003. Services were private. Joyce was one of nine children born to Capos and Annie Culpepper of Sheridan, Ark. She was the last surviving sibling. A 1939 graduate of Sheridan High School, she went on to get her degree in Dietary and Culinary Arts from the University of Dallas and El Centro College in Dallas, Texas. After returning from American Airlines, Sky Chef Division, Joyce moved to Trinidad, Texas, where she enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing and hosting family and many friends from all walks of life to warm hospitality. Joyce especially enjoyed cooking. Her culinary talents ranged from simple “down home cooking” to gourmet dishes which she would prepare and present with a magnificent creative artistry. Ice carvings were also one of her many talents. She was in demand by several large corporations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area to provide an ice carving at their special events on many occasions such as the three swans who had champagne flowing from their beaks at Prestonwood Country Club when they hosted the Ladies Professional Golf Tournament. Before moving to Texas, Joyce worked in Pine Bluff, Ark., at Montgomery Wards, Ben Pearson’s Bow and Arrow Factory and F.W. Woolworth (she was the manager of the lunch counter when the “sit ins” began during segregation). While working at Ben Pearson’s, she became interested in the sport of archery. Her archery talents led her into competition tournaments throughout Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas. Joyce was a champion archer and held many titles in the sport. Her favorite tournament she talked about was the Blanchard Springs Tournament in Branson, Mo., where the men and women competed as one division. To win this event, she had to literally split the arrow of a gentleman who had already hit the bulls-eye. She did it and won with grace! Joyce was asked many time to write her life’s story. She would always respond, “Honey, if I were to write the story of my life, it would be censored.” A lady of high intelligence, lover for her family and many friends and so unique in her choices as she walked through her life. From birth-to-death-to eternal life, she shall be missed, loved and forever in the hearts of the many lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her husband: C.M. (Milton) Cobb; son: Steven K. Moore; her parents: Capos and Annie Culpepper; and her siblings: sisters: Lillian Williams, Ruby Moore and Opal Culpepper and her brothers: Conley, Oscar, Harry, Sr., W.J. and Sid Culpepper. Joyce is survived by her children: Clyde L. Moore, Jr. and wife Elida, Mattie Kitchens and husband Eddie; and Carolyn Louise Bandelow and her husband Eric; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a host of friends. A celebration of life for Joyce and her siblings will be held on Saturday, June 7 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Ice House Restaurant in Sheridan. Please RSVP by June 5 if you plan to attend. Contact Sue or Harry Culpepper at (870) 942-3049. A come and go fellowship will be held at the Sheridan Community Center on June 8 from noon until 4 p.m.6 |
Biography* | | From Chip Culpepper:
Joyce's death marks the passage of an entire generation as she was the last surviving child of Capos Conley Culpepper and Lou Anna Augusta (Atchley) Culpepper.
She died peacefully during the night of Wednesday, January 22, 2003.
This grand woman was always a source of delight to me and my brothers in our youth. She was enthusiastic, boisterous, affable and absolutely filled to overflowing with the joy of living. She commanded the attention of everyone in the room when she was present -- and you could practically hear her coming just by the sound of her laughter anytime she entered the county! She positively adored my father [Conley Edward Culpepper] (her "Baby Brother"), and he positively adored her.
I last saw her at the funeral of her brother Oscar Norris Culpepper in November 2001, and she was still the vibrant, talkative, jovial and larger-than-life entertaining personality she had always been. Prior to that, I enjoyed her company at the Confederate grave marker ceremony for her grandfather John Malcolm Culpepper at Pine Forest, Texas in April 2000, along with my father -- where they were both honored guests. |

Based on the 1900 census record, Mary A. Eliza married John D. McGill circa 1878. The couple was noted with a nine month old daughter in the 1880 census of Randolph Co., AL and they were noted with their younger children in the 1900 census of Flatrock, near Almond to the west of what is now Wadley, AL. Mary A. Eliza was listed as having had ten children, nine of whom were still living in 1900. She apparently had at least one more child before her death in 1903 at the age of 40. Mary A. Biography* | | James F. G. Culpepper was the son of William Araspes and Zillah Ann Caroline (Barron) Culpepper. His middle names are a puzzle. A granddaughter, Mrs. Arthur (Marie Veazey) Turk wrote 4 that he was named James Francis Culpepper but "he objected to Francis and used Franklin instead." In the 1870 census he was noted as "James G. Culpepper." One wonders if his full name might have been James Francis Gillespie Culpepper? In any event, he was born and raised in the vicinity of what is now Wadley, AL and he was noted with his parents in the 1870 and 1880 census records of Randolph Co., AL.
In 1887, James married Valula Ann Seymore. Unfortunately, the 1890 census records burned so it is not known where the couple settled down initially. They are noted with their young family in the 1900 census of Chambers Co., AL and they are found in the 1910 census in Randolph Co., AL. James F. Culpepper's wife of 22 years died in 1910. He was 43 years old.
In 1911, he was married a second time, this time to Lela Lenora "Nora" Stephens. Nora (Stephens) Culpepper appears in the 1920 census of Tift Co., GA, as a widow living with her brother Walter and daughter, Maude.
On March 7, 2006, Frederick Seymour Culpepper, grandson of James, wrote: "James F Culpepper, in the early 1900, went to Wauchula, FL, near Dade City FL; Indian Town, FL, and a town near Miami, FL airport, and Homestead, FL. He was speculating and developing land ahead of the railroad arrival. At Homestead , FL all the money was lost because the road and railroad did not arrive, and the mosquitoes were so bad that they would carry a horse off. He went to work as a switchman on a railroad somewhere had an accident and lost an arm. He then went to live with his daughter Lola and son-in-law (M Vesey) south of Tifton, GA until his daughter died about 1943. He then moved to his daughter Maud Piper in Taft, Texas where he is buried."5 |

James is presumed to have been named for his ancestor Francis Gillespie. The family must have been proud of Francis Gillespie, as his name was commemorated in more than one branch of the family.

But the photo is a perfect match for the family of Elias D.'s brother, William A. Culpepper. So I'm posting the photo here. Biography* | | Charles E. Culpepper was the son of William Araspes and Zillah Ann Caroline (Barron) Culpepper. He was born and raised in the vicinity of what is now known as Wadley, AL. He was noted with his parents in 1880 Randolph Co., AL census records. Sometime in the 1890's, Charles went with his parents to Hopkins Co., TX 5 but the family returned to Alabama before the 1900 census.
Based on information from the 1910 census Charles married Nancy Lula around 1898. The couple and their infant daughter are noted in the 1900 census in Flatrock which is near Almond to the west of Wadley, AL. E. Hurley Pearson wrote:6
Their old family home,7 a log house was located a mile out of town but has been moved into Wadley and is now used as a craft shop. It is in remarkably good condition....
Based on the birth locations of the children from census records, the family returned to Hopkins Co., TX around 1903 and this is where the family was noted in the 1910 census. By the 1920 census, the family had moved to Carter Co., OK. E. Hurley Pearson wrote:6
Charles moved to Oklahoma (Shawnee) and raised a large family. (Many of his family are still in Shawnee.) He came back here 8 several times after the war (World War II) and visited. He was the last survivor. |

Biography* | | Ola Mae was the daughter of James F. G. and Valula Ann (Seymour) Culpepper. She was born and raised in Alabama. Unfortunately, the 1890 census records were burned so it is not known if the family was in Chambers or Randolph Co., AL at the time. By the 1900, the family was in Chambers Co., AL where Ola was noted with her parents in the census there and this is where she married Loomis Veazey in 1905. At some point, the couple moved to Tifton, Tift Co., GA and this is where Ola died in 1947 at the age of 57. |

Death* | December 1964 | He died at Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, in December 1964 at age 67. |
Biography* | | William Seymour Culpepper was the son of James F. G. and Valula Ann (Seymore) Culpepper. He was born and raised in Alabama, possibly in Chambers Co., AL since this is where he was noted with his parents in the 1900 census. By 1910, the family had moved to Randolph Co., AL and this is where his mother died when William was 12 years old. William's father and stepmother have not been located in 1920 census records but, based on later records, it is possible that the family moved to Georgia. In 1920, William appears as a 22-year-old single man and boarder at Dahlgren, Naval Proving Grounds, King George County, VA. His occupation was a surveyor of roads.
At some point, probably in the early 1920s, William married Martha Ida Wilde and, although their first child was born in Atlanta, GA, the couple apparently decided to settle down and raise their family in Chicago, IL. And this is where William died in 1964 at the age of 67. |
