Biography* Mrs. B. J. (Kathye Culpepper) Garrett, wrote in an 18 Jul 1978 letter about her father's name: He was named William Lewis but, (to the dismay of his oldest sister) he changed to Louis William. This is what you will find on any legal documents.
In a 15 Aug 1978 letter, Kathye wrote that her father was approximately 5'7" tall and "his hair was jet black and his eyes dark brown." Kathye continued in the 18 Jul 1978 letter with information about her father: Daddy was a totally disabled veteran of WW I. He enlisted in the Army at age 17 - with consent of the oldest sister (Maggie). He was an ambulance driver and while in the battle field encountered poison gas. He was in France when the Armistice was signed. After he received his discharge and just before he and mother married, he was a cowboy on Crutch Ranch. The ranch still exists and is just outside the city limits of Borger. At the time he was employed there, the closest town was Panhandle. I remember him telling me that it took him a full day to go to Panhandle and back in a buckboard to pick up supplies for the ranch. He returned to Oklahoma shortly after the first oil well was brought in in Hutchinson Co. He lived in Oklahoma until his death....
The following obituary is from an unknown Harmon County paper: Last Rites For L. W. Culpepper Held on Monday Funeral services were held Monday for Louis W. Culpepper, 46-year-old county resident who died Saturday at the local hospital.... A resident of the county practically all of his life, Culpepper was a veteran of World War I where he saw overseas service. In later years he was engaged in the automobile business in Gould. The family moved to Hollis four years ago. Services were held Monday afternoon at the Church of Christ with Minister A. F. Thurman and Earl Brecheen in charge. Interment was at Fairmount. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Celia Ellen Culpepper and two daughters, Mrs. Wynnogene Gould and Miss Kathleen Culpepper all of the home address. Biography* The following funeral notice is from an unknown source: THOMAS A. CULPEPPER Thomas A. Culpepper, 72, a retired Santa Fe Railroad Car Inspector, died today at 2:45 A.M. in St. Anthony's Hospital. A resident of Amarillo since 1908, he lived at 508 Houston. He was born July 26, 1885, in Anniston, Ala. [This, like the references to other children being born in Ashland, AL might be an attempt to reference a geographic location that would be recognized outside of Alabama. The 1880 census shows Ard's father, Thomas Jefferson Culpepper, living with his parents in Clay county. Ard's parents married in Clay county. Ard's sister, Mrs. Iva Culpepper Cline, wrote in a 31 Jul 1978 letter about visiting "the old farm where all the children were born" at Gibsonville near Ashland. So far, there is nothing except the obituary to indicate that Ard's parents might have had a child in Anniston, Calhoun county.] Survivors include his wife Nettie of Amarillo, two daughters, Mrs. Harold Bell of Amarillo and Mrs. Hollis Mashburn of Los Angeles; a brother, Dick Culpepper of Amarillo; four sisters, Mrs. Hattie Smith of Mineral Wells, Mrs. Spence Crossman of Pampa, and Mrs. Wade Ginnings and Mrs. Iva Cline, both of Amarillo, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 4 P.M. in Griggs Pioneer Chapel. Burial will be at Llano cemetery.
