James Culpeper of England and Virginia

M, (say 1639 - )
FatherJohn Culpeper the Merchant (c 1606 - c 1674)
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Culpepper.
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Colepeper.
Birth*say 1639 James was born at England say 1639.
Biography* A James Culpepper came to Virginia from abroad several times, and may have been the son of John Culpeper (born 1606).

The first mention of this James in immigration records was in 1665 or some time prior (Cavaliers and Pioneers Vol. I, p. 523, Patent Book 5, p. 397, one of the 52 headrights to Mr. Robert Davis or Davies, a ship captain.)

He is mentioned again as arriving in Virginia in 1667 or some time prior (Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. II, p. 23, Patent Book 6, p. 80, one of the 52 headrights of Anne Tofft or Toft. Anne was one of the more interesting characters in early Isle of Wight Co. VA history.

And James is mentioned a third time as arriving in Virginia in March 1670/1 or earlier (Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. II, p. 90, Patent Book 6, p. 348, one of the 85 headrights of Mr. John Prosser and Henry Creighton.

These multiple trips to Virginia suggest that James may have been a merchant, and was perhaps travelling between London, Barbados, and Virginia on business. This writer has seen no evidence as yet that James stayed in Virginia long enough to have left descendants, but it is possible. He may have been the son of John Culpeper (born 1606) in England, who was the son of John Culpeper of Feckenham and Ursula Woodcock.
Research note* It has been suggested that James Culpeper of England and Virginia, (born say 1639) might have been an ancestor of James Culpepper of Nash Co. NC, (s1728-b1799), but proof is lacking.

Dennis Culpeper of England and Virginia

M, (say 1637 - )
FatherJohn Culpeper the Merchant (c 1606 - c 1674)
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Culpepper.
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Colepeper.
Birth*say 1637 Dennis was born at England say 1637.
Biography* Only one reference to Dennis Culpeper has been found in early Virginia records. In 1664, or sometime earlier, he came to Virginia. In August 1664, Dennis was one of the 145 headrights of Mr. Richard Webley, Robert Davis (a ship captain), and Thomas Freshwater. A Robert Culpepper was also one of these headrights (Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. I, p. 430, Patent book 4, p. 106).
Given the mortality rate of the time period, and the mortality rate in early Virginia, one might suspect that both this early Dennis, and Robert, might have died young, without descendants. Or else they returned to England. In any case, neither of these men seems to have left any futher records in Virginia or elsehwhere, which have yet been discovered. Both Dennis and Robert were most likely young men in their twenties in 1664.

John White called Bartholomew Ingolbritson "my loving friend" and he was also godfather to Henry Culpepper Jr. In the following deed, John sells part of his father's land to Henry Culpepper:
