Robert Culpeper of England and Virginia

M, (say 1641 - )
FatherJohn Culpeper the Merchant (c 1606 - c 1674)
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Colepeper.
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Culpepper.
Birth*say 1641 Robert was born say 1641.
Biography* Robert Culpepper came to Virginia in August 1664, or sometime prior. Robert must have sold his headright, as on 24 August 1664, Mr. Richard Webley, [Captain] Robert Davis, and Thomas Freshwater, claimed Robert's headright of 50 acres (along with144 other headrights) and were granted land in Rappahannock and Northumberland Counties. 1
This writer feels that this was probably a son of John Culpeper, born 1606, son of John Culpeper and Ursula Woodcock. And that he was the uncle of the Robert Culpepper who left a will in Norfolk County, VA, in 1743. This latter Robert was probably born in Virginia, and it seems unlikely that he would have been traveling from abroad as a small infant.
As with his probable brothers, Dennis, and James, no further record has been found of this Robert. He may have died young, or may have returned to England, or to Barbados.

Thomas Greene

M, (say 1605 - before 1691)
Birth*say 1605 Thomas was born say 1605.
Marriage*say 1630 He married Jeane (?) at Virginia say 1630.1
Deedbetween 1680 and 1689 He was party to a deed between 1680 and 1689 at Lower Norfolk Co., Virginia,

168x -- Deed Bk 4, p 162. Thomas Green to John Culpepper and Thomas Gordon. My beloved friend Mr. John Culpepper & Thomas Gordon to be my sole and lawful attorneys.
Death*before 1691 He died at Lower Norfolk Co., Virginia, before 1691.
Biography* Further research on the Green / Greene family in early Lower Norfolk County, VA, is needed.

THOMAS GREENE, 270 acres on the Elizabeth River upon the head of Loyd's Creek, bounded from the Great Swamp N. W. by W. etc. 11 Jan 1652, p. 145 [of Patent Book 3]. Transport of four persons: Richard Owens, his wife, Milkey Hussey, Nicho. Caffeway, Henry Hills, Thomas Rope [note that six people are apparently listed]. By assignment from Richard Owens. 2

THOMAS GREENE, 400 acres in Lower Norfolk County, 18 March 1663, p. 347 (362) [of Patent Book 5]. South side of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, between the land of Capt. John Sibbs & Mr. Cornelious Loyd. Granted to Edward Loyd, who assigned to Richard Owens & by him assigned to the said Greene. 3

THOMAS GREENE, 520 acres in Lower Norfolk County, 6 November 1665, p. 530 (649) [of Patent Book 5]. South side of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, beginning on a poynt at the mouth of Loyds Creek, running along the maine River East by North & etc. to a poynt on the West side of GREENE'S CREEK & etc. 400 acres granted to the said Green on 18 March 1662 and 120 acres for the transport of three persons: William Grindon, Robert Watson, and Edward James. 4

Loyd's Creek, mentioned above, apparently does not appear on modern maps, and this writer has not determined its modern name.

Peter Smith was another early settler on this creek, and a James Smith seems to be a relative of Henry Culpepper, Jr., in this area a bit later. Perhaps these Smiths were the ancestors of the Smiths who were associated with the Culpeppers decades later in Anson County, NC, and later still, in Washington and Laurens Counties, GA:

PETER SMITH, 200 acres in Lower Norfolk County, 9 December 1665, page 466 (567) [of Patent Book 5]. In a branch of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, beginning on the East side of the head of Loyd's Creek at a marked hickory standing by Edmond Bowman's marked trees & etc., to a poynt at the mouth of the Reedy Branch & etc. For the transport of four persons, not named. 5

Haven't found the source for the above reference, but it's corroborated by Harry Wright Newman in "The Flowering of the Maryland Palentine."

Newman says "The administration of his estate (Nicholas Harvey) became much involved. His widow, Jane soon married a Thomas Green and departed for 'Elizabeth River in Virginia' and left her young step-daughter in the hands of her deceased husband's neighbours. She and her second husband were conscious of the dower interest in St. Joseph's Manor, so in March 1654/6 (that's what it says), conveyed their interest or 1/3 to Edward Lloyd of Maryland."
