The three sisters, who are all buried in the nave, were daughters of Ralph Freke, Esq., of Hannington, Wilts., and of Cecily, his wife, daughter of Sir Thomas Colepeper of Hollingbourne, Kent. Next is a monument to Lady Norton's daughter Dame Grace Gethin, d. 1697, aged twenty, wife of Sir Richard Gethin, 2nd Bt. After Dame Grace's death a book of devotions was published, purporting to be reflections noted down by her'with a pencil at spare hours, or as she was dressing'; it was prefaced by a poem written in her honour by Congreve. The work, in fact, is a compilation from Bacon and others. An anniversary sermon is preached in her memory in the Abbey every Ash Wednesday. Buried at Hollingbourne, where there is a similar monument. Source: Westminster Abbey Guide Book. |

Biography* | The Coleper of Aylesford pedigree states that Peter was "Mentioned 1399, and 1411 seized of the Manors of Blechenden (in Headcorn) and Bressyng [location unknown], according to an undated Chancery Proceeding". A signifcant amount of remodeling was done circa 1450 in the church of Headcorn, and in this period, the Culpeper arms were placed over the west doorway and on a tomb in the south wall just outside the Lady Chapel. The arms are described as "On a silver field a red engrailed bend with a crescent (on one of the shields) for cadency (second son)". Most likely, the arms and tomb are that of Peter Culpeper, who appears to have been either the second or third son of Sir John Culpeper of Oxenhoath. |
