Burial* | circa 29 July 1974 | His body was interred circa 29 July 1974 at Pinehurst City Cemetery, Pinehurst, Dooly Co., Georgia.2 |
Biography* | Duncan served in the U.S. Army in World War I, was a prisoner of Russian exiles in Siberia for nine months, married four times and had four families, and he had been unofficially engaged to a movie star, Dolores Costello. Today (2005), there are three sons, one daughter, and at least fifteen grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren all who would make Duncan proud. He married: (1) Ruby Leona Cooper about 1914. She was born 23 Sep 1899 in Laurens County, Georgia, and died 25 Feb 1946 in Rawlings Hospital, Sandersville, Georgia. She was the daughter of Cannon Cooper and Ada Warrens. (2) Mary Alice Johnson about 1922. She was born 03 Feb 1903 in Broning, Montana, and died Sep 1970 in Sacramento, California. She was the daughter of Pete Johnson and Sadie Smith. (3) Alma Culpepper about 1929 in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia. She was born 15 Sep 1908 in Crisp County, Georgia, and died 21 Jun 1946 in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia. She was the daughter of David Benjamin "Bud" Culpepper and Florence E. Hawkins. (4) Myrtice DuPree. She was born 11 Mar 1907 in Dooly County, Georgia, and died 29 Oct 1988 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. At the age of 24, Duncan left a wife and two small children to enlist in the United States Army. The First World War would be ending at about the time the train he was on was stopped by Russian exiles in Siberia who took him prisoner. During the nine months he was a prisoner, he almost froze to death in the bitter winter weather. He had mumps which was misdiagnosed by a doctor who operated to take his tonsils out. He was near death then also. But the good news is that a Russian Countess asked him to help her get to America and she would secretly get him released from the camp. Of course, he said he would. Their journey took them from Vladivostok in Siberia across northern China down to Peking where the U.S. Army Post was. But by the time they arrived (the Countess, a Chinese man, and Duncan Hampshire Harden) the Army Post had been burned down. So the Chinese man went his way leaving Duncan the responsibility of the Countess and her heavy trunk. Duncan finally booked passage for the Countess on a ship heading to Hawaii which was as close as he could get her to America. Duncan was not allowed back with the Americans then rebuilding their Army Post because all his records had burned with the buildings. It took almost three months, perhaps longer, for the personnel records for Duncan to arrive from Washington, D.C. During his time alone, he "visited" the Americans camped out on post property each day reminding them he was still there waiting. The rest of the time he worked at anything he could find to keep himself fed and sheltered in Peking, including sweeping floors, cleaning out chicken and other animal pens, and washing dishes in a café. When his records finally arrived, he was welcomed back on post. World War I was over in Europe. He served out his tour of duty and returned to the United States to an Army post near Tacoma, Washington (Camp Lewis, Washington). He was discharged July 4, 1922.2 |
