Martha Carteretta Valpy1
F, (say 1779 - )
Birth* | say 1779 | Martha was born say 1779. |
Baptism | 16 November 1779 | She was baptized at St. Mary's, co. Suffolk, England, on 16 November 1779. (Her father was the Rev. Dr. Richard Valpy, headmaster at Reading Grammar School for over 50 years.)1 |
Marriage* | say 1797 | She married Thomas James Straker say 1797.1 |
Married Name | say 1797 | As of say 1797, her married name was Straker.1 |
Marriage* | 21 November 1815 | She married William Alleyne Culpeper of Barbados at St. Martin's in the Fields, Westminster, London, England, on 21 November 1815.2 |
Married Name | 21 November 1815 | As of 21 November 1815, her married name was Culpeper. |
Research note* | 15 February 2016 | From Jim Brennan: His death occurred , according the Monumental Inscriptions of the West Indies, at the age of 31, in 1814 dob therefore c 1773.
Martha Carteretta Valpy, his wife, was baptised in Suffolk 16.11.1779 - her father, Dr Richard Valpy, a DD, (1754-1836, see DNB) is well documented and later the famous headmaster of Reading Grammar School. She was the only child of his first marriage - his second marriage was in 1782. It looks very much as though WA Culpeper II outlived her. See LBS UCL, the slave compensation database. Oddly, WA Culpeper II had a 15 month old male enslaved person baptised in St Joseph, Barbados in Sep 1818 as Richard Valpy. Had he been a pupil at Reading or was this simply a compliment to his new wife?3 |
