Obituary*25 July 2000 Elbert Wenton Hassell, 85, of Cloverdale, passed away Monday, July 24, 2000, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born August 6, 1914 in Washington County, North Carolina, a son of the late William Jordan Hassell and Sarah Frances Spruill Hassell.
     He was preceded in death by a sister,Gertie Mariner. He was a member of the Bonsack Baptist Church and was a World War II Navy veteran. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
     He is survived by his wife, Blanche Culpeper Hassell; a daughter, Betty Lou Moulton, Thaxton; a son, William Robert Hassell, Roanoke; a brother, Ervin Hassell, Roper, N.C; two half sisters, Juanita Oliver, Roper, N.C., and Patricia Hudson, Virginia Beach; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
     A funeral service will be conducted from the graveside at the Old Dominion Memorial Park on Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. Robert Moore. Friends may call at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, Tuesday from 12 to 4 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 201 Pheasant Run, Cloverdale, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.3
