From: Deborah Coggins Gammon, August 2000:
I just want to give you the dates on Alta Coggin, daughter of Adelia Culpepper and L. P. Coggin. I found her. It was rather like devine intervention. My Aunt Irene had told me that she was buried in Elm City with others in the family, but I walked Cedar Grove for an hour in June with no success. I returned in July and pulled through the arch at Cedar Grove, there was a graveside service going on. I pulled over to wait. I couldn't disturb them. I got out of my car to rest and walked over and sat on a gravestone-Alta C. Winstead. There she was with her husband, 2 sons and his parents. Goosebumps!!! Well, she was born Alta Lee Coggin, April 21, 1891, died July 30, 1965. John C. Winstead b. May 29, 1894, d. Nov. 2, 1973. Sons, James Edward Winstead b. July 8, 1921 d. John was born in the Bolivar Community of Poinsett County, Arkansas on January 5, 1840, and died on February 21, 1914 in Greene County, Arkansas. He was a teamster in the Civil War and was, so I have been told, in the Battle of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, although that has not been proven yet. He was married to Ellen Freeman before he married Martha and they had two daughters: Della born in 1876 and Elizabeth born in 1880. She may have died in chilbirth with Elizabeth.3 |

Murphy is found in the 1870 census as a clerk in a grocery store in Wedowee, Randolph Co AL. In 1880 and 1900 census, he is also in Randolph Co. The Alabama State Gazetteer & Business Directory for 1887 lists him in the community of Gay, Randolph Co AL: Rural post office 5 miles S. of Wedowee; population 15 J. C. Murphy, Postmaster Murphy, J. C. - cotton gin, flour and saw mill and general store. I have researched this family for several years as John's brother, James P. D. Murphy, was my great grandfather. John was never in Arkansas. If you need any more data I will be happy to give you all I have, but this should eliminate him as a Culpepper relative. (Contact information in footnote).5 |
