.
JAMES F. BENTON
.
While there were numerous Bentons in McMinn County, Tennessee, only members of James F. Benton's family moved to Texas. He was a grandson of Edmond Hart Benton, Revolutionary War hero.
James F. married Mary Skillington while very young.
.
Their first child was Edmond Huston, who married Mary Lou Thomasson. After being discharged from the Confederate army at Staunton, Virginia as a captain, he left with his family for Texas. They acquired land south of Bonham and he began freighting from Jefferson to Whitewright. He was successful in obtaining a post office for the settlement and he chose to use the first two letters in each of his names Ed-Hu-Be" as the name of the settlement, Edhube. Descendants of Huston who reside in Fannin County are Clark Benton a son of John and Mrs. Ruth McMahon a daughter of Mack. Great-grandchildren include Mrs. Howard Smith, Mrs. Steve Hodgkiss, E. E. Parker, Mrs. Thomas Keener, Mrs. Weldon Bragg, Mrs. Dale Covert and Mrs. Harold Stroud. Mrs. Bobbie Clayton is a great-great-grandchild.
.
A second son John Wesley left home in 1857 and after reaching Wise County made a contract to furnish buffalo meat to the crews of the Santa Fe Railroad that were working south through Cooke County. A letter written by him to his parents in 1861 described his experiences and success. This letter was destroyed by fire only a few years ago and was the last received by his parents. Future attempts to locate him proved futile.
.
Elizabeth married a Mr. Culpepper and they later joined her parents in a move to Texas. She died soon after reaching their new home and was buried on her father's land. Elizabeth Grove Cemetery near Savoy is named for her. This cemetery is encompassed by the Texas Power and Light plant.
.
Bernice married John Wilson. This couple also joined the Benton caravan when it moved west. They settled at Orange-yule.
.
After Mary's death James married Narrisa White. Children by this marriage were: Larissa Jane, Elleanor, Margarett, Eugenia, James, Jesse, Daily, Cass, Henry and John.
.
The Benton caravan with four wagons left McMinnville in 1867 leaving behind one daughter, Mary Melissa who married Harrison McClure, a childhood sweetheart. They finally reached a desirable land site west of Savoy. They fell in love with their new home with plenty of game such as deer, prairie chickens, turkey and quail. Their first harvest was bountiful and they could hardly believe such production of wheat, oats, corn and hay, which they described to Mary. They also wrote of Elizabeth's death and that she had been buried in a grove on their land. They later wrote of Eugenia's
sudden death and of her burial near Elizabeth.
.
Larrisa soon married John Roberts from McMinnville. Elleanor married James Lowe. James married Catherine Curbow Ward. Three of the sons became quite active in gold mining at Sierra, New Mexico. They disposed of their holdings at the height of the discovery and moved further west into Arizona and California. Margarett married John McSpaden a neighbor.
.
James and Narissa Benton are buried near their daughters in Elizabeth Grove Cemetery.
