William Gray Andrews1

Biography* Sibyl D. Slavin provided the following (original author unknown):
     William Gray Andrews born about 1808 or 1809 to Richard and Agnis (Agatha Brantley) Andrews in N.C. Quite likely in Northampton Co. and from there they moved to Franklin Co., NC and later to Taliafero Co., GA.
     William Gray Andrews had 1 draw in the 1832 Gold Lottery and drew 40 acres of land in Cobb Co. Ga. He paid tax on it after moving to Troup Co. but never lived on it. He also had "wild land" in Paulding Co, Ga. when he died.
     Some of his descendents say he married Molly Jones. The 1850 and 1860 census of Troup Co. gives his wife as Caroline. She may have been named Mary (Molly) Caroline Jones. We have been unable to find a marriage record.
     The oldest son was only 14 years younger than Caroline according to the 1850 census and William Gray was 18 years older than the son. Couples did marry at an earlier age in those years. He was on the tax list of Taliafero Co. Ga. in 1832, but with only 1 draw in the Gold Lottery, he was unmarried.
     The family is in the 1860 Troup Co. Ga. census, ages: Wm. G. 51, Caroline age 50. So one census is very wrong as to ages.
     Wm. Gray Andrews was killed in Jan. 1861 by a fall from his horse. He met a neighbor on a horse, the stallion on which William Gray was riding, reared and threw him and he died from a broken neck.
     In the 1861 Tax list of Troup Co. 698 Dist. Mountville is: Mrs. Caroline Andrews with 4 children between 6 and 18 years of age. The 40 acres in Cobb co. is valued as $480.
     Their children were: 1. William Lafayette Andrews. 2. John David Andrews. 3. Thomas Jefferson Andrews. 4. James Monroe Andrews. 5. Liza Jane Andrews (born 23 Sep 1842, married Tom Day). 6. Mary Frances (Fannie) Andrews (born 7 Jul 1843, married Ferguson). 7. Reuben Brown Andrews. 8. Narcissa Andrews. 9. Louisa Andrews. 10. Zachery Taylor Andrews.2

Legally Blind, He Sees Purpose for Each Piece

When large limbs fall or trees topple in their entirety, folks call on Charles Culpepper.

Actually, they're doing him a favor. The wood provides a starting place for Culpepper's hobby.
In his metal-roofed studio, the 68-year-old Culpepper takes to his lathe and creates works of art from chunks of wood.

The East Alabama native concedes his creative kinship with wood probably comes from his father, who was a master carpenter. The son, however, did not receive paternal encouragement to take up his father's profession.

"He wouldn't even let me help him," Culpepper said. "He told me long ago if he ever saw me pick up a hammer to make a living, he'd take it and knock me in the head. I guess he figured there were easier ways to make a living."

Retired from the insurance business, Culpepper claims wood turning as a hobby. It's a hobby for which he has gained no small amount of admiration.

A lifetime woodworker, Culpepper became serious about wood turning in 1987. Since that time he's become a member of the Craftmen's Guild of Mississippi, the Mississippi Woodworkers Association and the American Association of Woodturners. He has shown his finished wood pieces at various art shows and has presented pieces in fine art galleries in San Antonio, Texas, and at The Attic Gallery in Vicksburg.

Culpepper migrated to Mississippi in the mid-'50s. His family's lived in Rolling Fork since 1967.

"This town's been good to us," said Culpepper, who served on the town's board of aldermen for 19 years. "Our two daughters married local boys. One lives next door; the other, five houses down the street."

Now legally blind, Culpepper continues to see the possibilities in each scrap of wood.

"I had to get away from dimensional-type woodwork," he said. "I can turn without seeing very well."

Before entering his studio to begin a new work, Culpepper's goal is always the same -- "to produce a gallery-quality piece of wood."

After the wood is turned into the desired shape -- primarily vase-shaped hollow forms, the process is relatively simple, Culpepper said.

"Sand it smooth. Apply a coat of oil for a sealer. Buff it smooth on a wheel. Wax and polish. That's it."

He uses various types of wood for his projects, but admits he makes most of his natural treasures from what most folks would call waste wood. The artist doesn't need 20/20 vision to envision the endless possibilities in the wood.

"I have some mental image of the end project," he said. "Then I start turning away waste to get down to it. When you open up a piece of wood, you always find something wonderful, beautiful on the inside."5

Biography* Obituary:
Mr. W. H. (Mans) Culpepper, 97 year old confederate veteran and native of Camilla died at the Georgia Soldiers Home in Atlanta Tuesday morning at an early hour following a short illness.
     Mrs. T. B. Twitty Sr. left Saturday night for Atlanta to be with her father and was at his bedside when the end came. A large connection of relatives and friends in this community are saddened by his death. Mr. Culpepper's body was brought back to Camilla, his old home, reaching here Tuesday night.
     Funeral services took place Wednesday afternoon at two-thirty at Bramlett funeral home. Services were conducted by the Rev. P. J. Keadle, assisted by the Rev. Charles Britton, Jr. and the Rev. N. H. Williams and comforting hymns were beautifully sung by a mixed quartet. Pall bearers, all great nephews of Mr. Culpepper were Crawf Collins, Webb Bullard, Roy S. Hall, Carl E. Gaulden, Vernon Twitty, T. B. Twitty, Jr. and E. L. Butler. The flowers were unusual in number and rare beauty. Interment was in the family plot in Oakview cemetery.
     William Henry Culpepper, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Culpepper was born in Camilla June 26, 1849 and grew up here. He enlisted in July 1864 in Company I, Twelfth Regiment, Georgia militia and served eleven months in that military organization as a private and was discharged in May 1865. His tour of duty was confined to Georgia serving under Captain McGregor. At time of his death he was one of the last three confederate veterans at the Soldiers Home. Returning to Camilla after the War Between the States, Mr. Culpepper entered business as cotton broker and farmer. He later lived for several years in Albany where he was identified with business life there.
     He was married about 1873 to Miss Mattie C. Collins, daughter of the late B. F. Collins Sr. and Jane Collins, who preceded him in death many years ago. He had one daughter, Miss Eula Culpepper, now Mrs. T. B. Twitty Sr. who survives him.
     Mr. Culpepper and his daughter moved to California where they spent seven years. After a short residence in Miami, he moved to Atlanta where he spent the remainder of his life. He entered the Confederate Home there ten years ago. The last confederate veteran convention attended by Mr. Culpepper was at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1938. He had been quite feeble for the past year.
     Mr. J. A. Cochran and Mr. E. T. Cochran are nephews of Mr. Culpepper. There are many great nephews and nieces and numerous relatives here and elsewhere to mourn his death.1
