Biography* | 6. WILLIAM4 GILBERT (Roger3, Roger2, Rogerl) died between 3 Feb. 1739 and 19 Nov. 1749 in Surry Co., VA. 1 This is the only record in which he was mentioned, other than his father's will. His will was quite lengthy. . 3 Feb. 1739, Surry Co., VA. Will of William Gilbert. Mentions: wife, Joanna, give her all land in Brunswick Co. and lend her plantation where I now live; sons John, William, James, each one gun, sword and cartouche box, feather bed and furniture, two cows and calves, son John to have first choice; daughters Mary, Hannah, Martha and Ann, each feather bed & furniture, two cows & calves, gold ring. /s/ William Gilbert (Seal) Wit: Thos. Cullum, John Cooper and Thomas Cooper. Wife Joannah, Extrx. Probated 19 Nov. 1740. . William was left no land by his father, yet had land in Brunswick Co. and a plantation in Surry Co. John was evidentally the eldest son since he got first choice. All of the children appear young--the daughters are unmarried and the sons received only token bequests. If John had been of age the land would have passed directly to him. . Children: . +7. i. John5 b. ca. 1717, Surry Co., VA d. 1782-1790 m. Elizabeth Saunders . ii. James5 . Hi. William5 . iv. Death* | after 1749 | She died at Surry Co., Virginia, after 1749. |
Biography* | Joanna Gilbert was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Cooper. The will suggests that Joanna Gilbert is the only child over 21 in 1730 and the only daughter that was married. She was probably quite young at the time James Cooper made his will. She was probably 21 or 22 and therefore born about 1708. No other mention is made of her in the records. |

Researcher* | January 2011 | From Mike Moffitt, Jan 2011: RE: James Cooper, your #40505. I believe James Cooper of Surry Co., Va is my 6th generation g-grandfather. My line goes through his son Thomas who went on to Henry Co., VA and eventually died in Hancock Co., GA in 1796. How are you related to James Cooper? It looks like it's perhaps through his daughter Joanna who married William Gilbert? Could we be connected through the Cooper family? I notice you have James Cooper's birthdate as about 1659. I have him as born around 1675 in either Southwark Parish, Surry Co., VA or London, England, married to Elizabeth Cannon (dau. of John Cannon, Jr. and Mary Price) and son of Thomas Cooper and Hester ?.2 |

Father | Roger Gilbert II (s 1627 - b 21 Sep 1663) |
Mother | Elinor (?) (s 1629 - b 20 Oct 1673) |
Birth* | say 1657 | Roger was born say 1657. |
Biography* | 4. ROGER3 GILBERT (Roger2, Rogerl) was born between 1652 an 1673, probably in Surry Co., VA, and he died in 1726 between 4 Jan. and 16 Mar. The name of his wife is unknown. . 7 Nov 1682, Surry Co., VA. Deed. Roger Gilbert of Surry Co., Colony of Virginia, planter, sells to Alexander Moore of said county, 'half of my land at the head of Gray's Creek near the mouth of the Swamp called Warrelow's Swamp, and the land of Samuel Thompson.' Wit: William Thompson, Samuel Thompson, Katherine Thompson. . Widow Gilbert's land was also on Gray's Creek. Land was not mentioned in her will, only 'the plantation.' Since there is no deed to Roger3, the land must have been owned by his father and left to his mother during her lifetime and then to him upon her death. Since none of this was mentioned in the above deed, it must have been common knowledge. The term 'planter' describes him as being one of the landed gentry of the area and makes him a respected man in the county. . 7 Nov. 1682, Surry Co., VA. Deed. Roger Gilbert for 4500 lbs. tobacco, sells 75 acres to Nicholas Witherington, land lying between Gray's Creek, adjoining Smith's Fort. . 16 Mar. 1726, Surry Co., VA. Will of Roger Gilbert of Surry Co. Mentions sons Thomas Gilbert (my plantation land), William Gilbert, daughter Mary Gilbert (the rest of my estate equally divided). Dated 4 Jan. 1726. Nicho. Maget, Exec. Wit: Mathew Metcalf, Robert Judkins. . Following the English laws of primogeniture, Thomas being the eldest son, would get the land. Since his wife was not mentioned in the will, she must have died before 1726. . Children: . 5. i. Thomas4 b. before 1705, Surry Co., VA . +6. ii. William4 d. 1740, Surry Co., VA m. Roger Gilbert II1
M, (say 1627 - before 21 September 1663)
Father | Roger Gilbert (s 1597 - ) |
Birth* | say 1627 | Roger was born say 1627. |
Marriage* | circa 1650 | He married Elinor (?) at Virginia circa 1650. |
Death* | before 21 September 1663 | He died at Surry Co., Virginia, before 21 September 1663. |
Biography* | 1. ROGER2 GILBERT (Roger Sr.1) was not mentioned in the records other than the land grant to Barthalomew Hoskins. Any information on him had to be deduced from other sources. He married Elinor ca. 1650. . 21 Sept. 1663, Surry Co., VA. Indenture between Elinor Gilbert, widow, and Edward Pen for some woodlands for 18 years, paying seven days work yearly. . July 1673, Surry Co., VA. Mat Marriott & Alice Marriott his wife, sold John Solway... on Gray's Creek... adjoining Widow Gilbert's land. . 20 Oct. 1673, Surry Co., VA. Will of Elinor Gilbert. Elinor Gilbert, eldest daughter, Mary Gilbert, daughter. Son Roger Gilbert, minor. Daughters sole executrix. Dated 19 May 1673, probate 20 Oct. 1673. Wit: Samuel Blow, Geo. Proctor. . 7 Apr. 1674, Surry Co., VA. Probate of Mary Gilbert's will by Elinor and Mary Gilbert. (This is an error made by the clerk of the court. A later document corrected the error and changed it to Elinor.) Given at James City by Sir William Berkley, Knight . 5 May 1674, Surry Co., VA. William Heath with Adam Heath security, bond as guardian of Roger Gilbert, orphan of Elinor. . The five wills abstracted above are all that has been found on the second generation of Gilberts but they do give quite a bit of information. Roger2 died before 21 Sept. 1663 and left a widow, Elinor. Even though Roger's name was not mentioned, Elinor was, in all likelihood, his wife, especially since she named their only son Roger. . Surry County was cut from James City County in 1652 and probably the Gilbert's lived in that part of James City that became Surry. . Elinor died in 1673 and left 3 children--two daughters who were of age and were therefore born before 1652, and a son who was a minor and was therefore born between 1652 and 1673. Roger2 and Elinor were therefore married about 1650 and Roger2 was probably born about 1630. With these dates, it is estimated that Rogerl was born about 1610. Roger3 was born between 1653 and 1663, if he were a minor in 1674, and his mother was a widow in 1663. . Children: . 2. i. Elinor3 b. ca. 1650-1652, VA . 3. ii. Mary3 b. ca. 1650-1652, VA . +4. iii. Roger3 b. 1652-1673, Surry Co., VA d. 1726, Surry Co., VA. |

Roger Gilbert1
M, (say 1597 - )
Birth* | say 1597 | Roger was born say 1597. |
Biography* | ROGER GILBERT Sr. was the immigrant for this branch of the Gilbert family that came to America. He arrived in Virginia with his son, Roger Jr., sometime before 1645, probably coming from England. 1 Jan. 1645. Mr. Barthalomew Hoskins, 800 acres, upon the Northward side of the Eastward branch of the Elizabeth River, Jan. 1, 1645 near Hoskins Creek, transport of 16 persons: Richard Hoskins, Osmond Boardman, Joane Curtis, Barbara Douse, Alice Curtis, Thomas Cakebread, Mary Richardson, Edward Spicer, Edmond _____, Sands Nicholls, Roger Gilbert, Sr., Roger Gilbert, Junr., Robert Body, Robert Harwood, William Knowles, Masld. Fisher Barthalomew Hoskins was granted land for transporting people into Virginia. The land granted to him was on a branch to the Elizabeth River. No mention was made as to where the immigrants settled. The Gilberts probably settled in James City County, Virginia, where records have been destroyed. No mention was made of Roger Gilbert's wife. He could have left her in England to follow later or she could have been dead. No additional records on Roger Gilbert Sr. have been found. |

This service is often incorrectly credited to his son, William2, who would have only been one year old at the time. |
