Death* | 2 January 2001 | She died at Mariposa, Mariposa Co., California, on 2 January 2001 at age 87. |
Biography* | In memory of Nina Lewis Strawser, 1913-2001 . By Grant Menzies - Portland, Oregon (grandson of Nina Lewis Strawser) . She always knew I would be published one day. She lent me her portable typewriter when I was 10, and watched me use it religiously. My product was doggerel, "But you will be published," my grandmother predicted. In later years, when I sent her my published writings, her response was the same, with an added twinkle: "I told you so!" Grandma herself was a good writer, and an amusing one, who could write just the way she spoke, a gift many of us professionals never attain. Best of all, she was a story-teller. She spoke of her girlhood in vivid scenes. How to forget the fireflies dancing among her mother's Texas flower-beds? Or the tornados that drove shovels through trees? Or her antebellum grandmother, Amaryntha Culpepper, reciting old-fashioned poetry and remembering the time the Yankees came? . My grandmother did not have an easy life. But like a poet, she examined its substance with sensitivity and without fear. She had deep faith, which helped her survive life's vicissitudes, and helped her grandchildren survive their own lives' challenges. Her favorite poem to quote to me, after all, was Rudyard Kipling's "If." She was truly one to keep her head when all about her were losing theirs. She was a great lady, and though we miss her terribly, we would be amiss if we dwelled too much on loss and not enough on gain. For what she gave so generously to family and friends of all the strength and goodness that filled her heart, we all are better people. |
