Obituary*7 June 2001 William Culpepper, whose family-owned Culpepper Motor Co. is among the oldest Ford dealerships in the state, died Thursday at Windermere Health Center in Augusta. He was 89.
     The native of Dearing ran the Harlem dealership for nearly four decades and remained active in the business until shortly before his death. The dealership is now managed by his son Robert W. "Bobby" Culpepper.
     "I think he will be remembered for his honesty and integrity," his son said. "He was a strong, gentle, polite man. He was such a gentleman."
     Mr. Culpepper worked as a ground crew chief for Pan American Airlines in Miami before returning to the Augusta area in 1948 to purchase the Harlem-based dealership, then known as Prather Motor Co., from relative Lionel Prather. The dealership, a fixture in downtown Harlem for decades, was moved to a location off Interstate 20 four years ago. The Culpepper Ford franchise, the oldest in the Augusta area, won numerous awards during his ownership, including Ford Motor Co.'s prestigious President's Award in 1987. The company also is a five-time winner of the North American Customer Excellence award and an eight-time recipient of the Distinguished Achievement award.
     Mr. Culpepper was active in the Harlem community as a member of Harlem United Methodist Church, the Elks Club and the Harlem Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.
     Bobby Culpepper's son Brian, who works in the dealership's fleet sales and Internet department, is being groomed to take the family business into the third generation. Other survivors include daughter-in-law Linda Phillips Culpepper of Harlem; and grandson William Stacy Culpepper of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harlem United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Richard Broom, Rudolph Dixon and Dave Sargent officiating. Interment will be in Harlem Memorial Cemetery.

Entered into rest June 6, 2001, at Windermere Health Center, Mr. W. S. "Bill" Culpepper, 89, husband of the late Mrs. Madaline Hall Culpepper. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Harlem United Methodist Church with the Revs. Richard Broom, Rudolph Dixon and Dave Sargent officiating. Interment will be in the Harlem Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include one son, Robert W. In 1948, he moved from Florida to Harlem, Ga. where he became owner of Culpepper Motor Company, a Ford franchise, where he remained actively involved for fifty years and received numerous awards. Pallbearers will be John Neal, Ed Clary, E.G. Meybohm, Lionel Prather, Bobby Meybohm, and Jimmy Holmes. Memorials may be made to the Harlem United Methodist Church, PO Box 39, Harlem, GA 30814. Friends may call the residence of son, Robert Culpepper, 180 Ballard Drive, Harlem, Ga. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Starling Funeral Home, Hwy 78, Harlem, Ga.5
