I, M. McCORVEY, Judge of Probate hereby certify, JESSE THAMES, Admr. of Est. of N. BROUGHTON, personally appeared before me & being first duly sworn upon oath says the foregoing acount is correct. /s/ JESSE THAMES. Before me April 11, 1859, M. McCORVEY, Judge. The preceeding a/c examined & stated by the Court & Ordered to be recorded. April 11, 1859. M. McCORVEY, Judge

Notes of interest:
1. Based on the date of the Codicil to the Will (June 23, 1852), the probate of the Will in Greene County, MS (July Term - 1852), and the July 1852 date of several of the bills in the final account settlement, it would appear that Nathaniel Broughton died about the first of July in 1852.
2. The body of Nathaniel Broughton was brought back to Monroe County, AL in July of 1852 (see item #16 of the final settlement of accounts).
3. Sarah Broughton is dead by March 28, 1859 and the money ($540.40) paid out of the Estate for her support was paid to Charles R. Broughton (see item #19 of the final settlement of accounts).
4. The negroe slaves remained in Mississippi from June 1852 through June 1855 (see items #14 & #15 of the final settlement of accounts).
5. The negro woman, Martha, had two(2) more children, Dempsey and Martha, between June 1852 and June 1855.
6. Martha and her children are sold together (in compliance with the Will) along with Henry to Charles R. Broughton. In the Will transcript from Greene County, MS one of Martha's children is refered to as "Andersen", but in the Sale Bill from Monroe County, AL he is refered to as "Andrew".
7. The expenses as shown on the final settlement of accounts only add up to $2755.39 instead of the $3455.39 shown. This is a differeence of $700.00 (the price Charles R. Broughton paid for Henry). I have often wondered if there was an "unwritten" charge to the estate to re-imburse Charles R. Broughton the purchase money of Henry in order that Henry might be given his freedom upon attaining the age of 21 as set forth in the Will.3

Biography* Herbert W. "Hub" Broughton and Mary Lee Barnes Notes:
Nathaniel Broughton, son of Edward Broughton & Elizabeth Ragan Broughton, married Sarah Benbow around 1800-1802, though no documented proof has been located.
.
Nathaniel was on the Sumter County, South Carolina census in 1810, but he would not remain in his home state. He left what is present-day Sumter, SC area and settled in Monroe County, Alabama around 1814-7. Sarah Broughton appears on a list of charter members of the Old Salem Church, Monroe County, Alabama in 1817. Edward Broughton, believed to be Nathaniel's father, is listed as deceased in the same church records that same year. Also in 1817, church records indicate a Conference met concerning the baptism of several including Rachel and Mary Ann Broughton. In July 27, 1839, Nathaniel and Sarah Broughton were still listed as members on the church records.
.
Old Cahaba land records of Broughtons in Alabama list a Nathaniel Broughton in Monroe County on May 5, 1819 and an Edward T. Broughton in Monroe County on October 28, 1836.

Children. Compiling information from a variety of sources indicates Nathaniel and Sarah had the following children...
- James R. Broughton, born 1803 in South Carolina
- Edward Thomas Broughton , born 1805 in South Carolina - married Rachel Winborne Walker
- Nathaniel William Broughton, born 1807-8 in South Carolina - married Ann Nettles
- Charles Richard Broughton, born 1810 in Green County, Georgia - married Mary R. Snell.
- Sarah Broughton - married William Brown
- Susannah Broughton, born 1814 in Alabama - married John O'Gwynne
- Mary Ann Broughton: One book written by a descendant shows Mary Ann ("Mary A. E.") Broughton as the daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah, born May 4, 1810 and died October 14, 1883 in Bucatunna, Mississippi - married to Jesse Cornelius Thames, a Baptist minister. But that same book quotes another source "Proud to Remember", by Kearl, that states Mary Ann is Edward Broughton's daughter and therefore Nathaniel's sister. Neither source gives documented proof of a connection. (Warren Culpepper note: The Kearl book is riddled with errors and in a National Genealogical Quarterly review, the reviewer concluded that the book had no genealogical value. As Edward never moved from SC, it seems quite unlikely that Mary Ann could be Edward's daughter. But, there is no proof that she is Nathaniel's daughter, either, but she has been listed as such within this family tree as I believe that is the most likely relationship.)

Death. For some unknown reason Nathaniel would head further west for a short time prior to his death. At age 82, he is listed on the 1850 census living with a grandson, Nathaniel W. Broughton (age 23) in Green County, Leakville, Mississippi. Nathaniel died in 1852. His handwritten will, witnessed by Walter Denny and Fasgeher M Leah, was filed in Monroe County, Alabama. In it, he left his wife Sarah, the estate of 4 slaves plus all household and kitchen furniture. After her death, the slaves were to be sold and the money equally divided between his two daughters, Sarah Brown and Susan O'Gwynne. His wife, Sarah died in Monroe County, AL in 1859. Nathaniel also left instructions in his will that his slave, Henry, was to learn carpentry and, at age 21, be given his freedom. Jesse Thames and Washington Aldreidge were appointed to remove the property and see "that the whole of said will be carried out" in Codicil dated June 23, 1852.

Edward Broughton1

M, (say 1740 - )
Birth*say 1740 Edward was born say 1740.
Marriage*say 1764 He married Elizabeth Ragan at South Carolina say 1764.
Biography* There is much speculation over the father of Edward Broughton. Descendants researching the line have claimed descent from two different sons of Thomas Broughton of South Carolina, who served as governor of that state from 1735 to 1737. Here are three possibilities of paternity:
     1. In one source, The Broughton Memoirs, the author M. Leon Broughton speculates that Edward Broughton was actually Edward "Nathaniel" Broughton, son of Nathaniel Broughton and grandson to Thomas Broughton. However, no documented proof is given and the name "Nathaniel" or the initial "N" does not appear on any of the records which bear Edward Broughton's name, but he did name one of his sons Nathaniel.
     2. Another claim to the Thomas Broughton line is based on the will of Thomas' son Andrew Broughton, who married Hannah Guerard. A descendant of Edward's son John claims Andrew's will states the possibility of an unborn son or daughter. If there was a male infant born shortly after the death of Andrew, he would have been born sometime in 1739-40 since the will was dated July 30, 1739.
     3. Finally, another possiblity is that Edward was the son of Edward Broughton and Sarah Weatherly, widow of Thomas Weatherly, who were married in 1740 in St. Helene's Parish, SC. This possible patron is documented as a witness to several land deeds in the 1730's and early 1740's. Other records show Edward and his wife Sarah, of Granville County, St. Helene's Parish, sold slaves to Joseph Jenkins on July 1, 1740.
Despite his now controversial paternity, we do know Edward married Elizabeth Ragan, the daughter of Revoluntionary patriot William Ragan of Sumter Co., South Carolina . The couple lived in South Carolina while it was still under British rule. As documented in a land grant dated May 10, 1773 (Sec. of State's Office, Book 000, Pg 638), King George III granted 250 acres north of the Santee River in "Craven County St Mark's Parish on a branch called Halfway Swamp" to Edward Broughton. It was signed by then Lieutenant Governor in Council, Geo. Davidson, certified by John Bremar and witnessed by the "Honorable William Bull Esq."
Another grant obtained by Edward Broughton followed the Revolutionary War. It states that for "Two pounds six shillings of sterling money paid by Edward Broughton into the Treasury for the use of this State (of South Carolina)" he is granted "a Plantation or Tract of Land, containing One hundred acres situation in the District of Camden on Halfway Swamp...." It was witnessed by "his excellency William Moultrie esq., Governor and Commander in Chief" of the State, at Charleston on May 2, 1784.
Edward would later have to sell part of his land to satisfy a debt he owed John Chesnut and Company in 1785. The court ruled that Chestnut and Company should recover the sum of 12 pounds, 6 shillings, 7 pence plus 3 pounds, 1 shilling, 5 pence for court cost. A writ of Furifacias issued by Honorable Thomas Waters, one of the judges, directed Sheriff Joseph Brevard to take over the lands and sell them to the highest bidder. A deed (indenture recorded 1797) confirms that one of Edward's own sons, Nathaniel was the highest bidder and bought the property at a public auction in 1785 for a flat 9 pounds. Fifteen years later Nathaniel would sell the land (350 acres) to James Harkneys (Harkness) for 140-150 dollars. (Deed Book AA, p. 61, Sumter Co., SC)
(Note: St Mark's Parish would later be charted as Sumter County, South Carolina)
Edward was active in the community. According to Camden District South Carolina Wills and Administration, 1781-1787 (B. Holcomb & E. O. Parker Southern Historical Press, p.53), Edward was one of three men who appraised the Estate and Inventory of John Felder of St Mark's Parish, Craven County. On February 4, 1784, in the Estate of Joshua Stone, the Warrant of Appraisement was issued for Edward and two others. According to South Carolina Jury Lists, 1718-1783 (Mary B. Warren, Heritage Press, 1977, p.35) Edward served on the Petit Jury in Camden District, Craven County, East of the Wateree in 1783.
According to the 1790 census of Clarendon Co. SC, Edward Broughton had 3 males over the age of 16 including himself, 2 boys under the age of 16 and 3 females living with him at the time.
Edward and Elizabeth had the following children:
     1. Jemima Broughton was born ca. 1765. She married John Cannon, but following his death in 1809, she married her second husband, John Randall.
     2. Nathaniel Broughton was born ca. 1768
     3. John Henry Broughton was born ca. 1773.
     4. Edward Broughton Jr. was born ca. 1777.
     5. Martha Broughton was born ca. 1778. She married Jeremiah James.
     6. Sally Broughton whose date of birth is unknown.2

Biography* The following is from a paper on Simeon Otis, written Feb 6, 1996 by Edie Geiger, 4621 Geiger Road, Milton, FL 32583.

"Sim" Otis, as he was sometimes known, appears to have been a native Santa Rosa Countian who lived and made his fortune primarily in his own back yard. Not much is known about his early life as this information was obtained entirely from the public records of Santa Rosa County, Florida, and the family cemetery plot in Milton Cemetery at Milton, Florida, with some "supposing" thrown in.

It is believed that his father, grandfather and a brother were all named Sylvester - leading to some confusion. Therefore, some of the following "facts" ain't necessarily so.

Sim Otis' father, Sylvester R. Otis, Jr., died in 1869 at the age of 26. He fathered at least three children - a daughter, Linnie, and two sons, Sylvester H. Otis, born circa 1862 and Simeon Otis, born circa 1868. [Warren Culpepper note: There is contradictory evidence in the Culpepper family bible, as written by Alma Elaine Payne Culpepper in the 1950's, with information gathered directly from her mother, Alma Howe Payne, daughter of Joseph R. Howe and Linnie Otis Howe. The bible shows that Linnie and Simeon were the children of Edwin H. Otis and Martha A. (Strickland). This is also supported by the 1870 and 1880 censuses.]

The public records show several instruments involving an Otis only identified as "S. Otis", leading to more confusion as "S." could be any of the Sylvesters or Simeon. One such instrument was an agreement in August of 1896 between S. Otis and Wade H. Jernigan regarding delivery of logs to Magnolia Boom located 1 1/2 miles North of Milton on Blackwater River. (It was not determined who owned the mill, nor its exact location, but it is believed that is was located on the east side of Blackwater River, just above the Navy Boat Docks as now exists.) It is supposed that this Otis was Sim and he was beginning to go into business, because at this same time he purchased from W. S. Lewis and his wife about sixty-five acres of land on Robinson Point. The Lewises reserved a parcel of land to be used as a graveyard, but did not mention anything about a mill. Simeon Otis and his wife, Frances E. Otis, deeded this same property to Otis Lumber Company the next month. In this instrument, the graveyard was lessed out, but, again, no mention of a mill.

In November, Sim Otis attended a sheriff's sale on the front steps of the courthouse and was the highest bidder on 1,280 acres of land formerly belonging to William Johnson. This land was located North and East of Milton, and Sim paid $158.45 for the entire 1,280 acres. This probably was the beginning of his acquiring land for timber purposes. The logs were branded "2" and could easily be floated down the river and bay to Robinson Point.

Two years later in August of 1898, there appears a deed in the public records from Otis Lumber Company, selling for $2,000.00 to Simeon Otis a one-third interest in 1,740 acres of land, plus an additional approximate 65 acres on Robinson Point. There was the same mention of the graveyard reserved to public use forever, plus there was now mention of a sawmill, engines, boilers, machinery and tools. Apparently Otis Lumber Company was owned by Sim Otis along with C. W. Hagerman who was identified as President, and F. B. Hagerman was Secretary. The extent of their involvement was not researched.

Also, at this same time, Otis Lumber Company sold to P. Tomasello for $4,000.00 a two-thirds interest in the same property, mill and equipment.

In addition, Otis Lumber Company agreed to sell all their pitch pine logs at the mill or in streams, to Robinson Point Lumber Company for $10,000.00. The 1,740 acres, the mill site and the equipment sold for $6,000.00 of this $10,000.00, leaving the value of the logs at $4,000.00. They also sold all the goods in the store at the mill of Otis Lumber Company at Robinson Point, Florida, for $806.80. Sim Otis was probably not out of the picture yet, as Robinson Point Lumber Company was a co-partnership composed of P. Tomasello and S. Otis. (However, this S. Otis could have been Sim's brother, Sylvester H. Otis.) The agreement also allowed Otis to store lumber at no charge until it could be removed. Robinson Point Lumber Company incorporated in 1899 according to their Charter and Notice of Incorporation.

On May 3, the following year, 1899, Simeon and Frances E. Otis sold almost all their holdings to Peter Tomasello. These holdings consisted of 1/3 undivided interest in lands (probably over 3,000 acres) and the mill, plus their 1/2 interest in Robinson Point Lumber Company. Tomasello paid $3,500.00 cash, plus assumed the debt of about $750.00 which Otis owed, which Tomasello was to satisfy. Otis even sold all his personal property except for a sailboat christened "Dewey", 2 pairs oyster tongs, 1 horse and buggy, his personal tools, effects, and household furnishings. He probably had decided to move to Mulat, because about 8 months later he purchased a parcel along the railroad track and the bayou for $100.00. The exact location of this land was not determined, but he purchased this from Warren E. Urch and Agnes Urch. Could this have been the house site?

Four months later, Sim Otis invested $4,000.00 in another parcel from Hans H. Seivers and Emma J. Seivers - the parcel identified as being the Bayou Mulatto Mill Site and included the mill and machinery, was West of the railroad. (H. H. Seivers purchased 1/3 interest in the mill for $100.00 in 1888 from Richard Duval.) At this same time, the Seivers also executed a deed to Otis for land East of the railroad. In 1877, Duvall's deed from William Judge and Martha Judge covered the whole South half of the section which was about 168 acres. Duvall only paid $400.00 for this and there was no mention of a mill. The assumption is that the mill at Mulat was built sometime between 1877 and 1888.

Sim Otis apparently prospered for the next 25 years or so, continuing in the buying and selling of property and improving the mill. There is an indication he added a shingle mill to the operation. There are numerous transactions recorded in the public records in Santa Rosa County, but it seems he held interests in other counties as well. There are many bills of sales and contracts recorded. Several of these involved Rex Robinson for cut lumber in booms at Mulat and Ferry Pass. One included some lumber identified as South American and some as Cuban lumber.

In 1900, the depot was apparently being used, as the "Depot Lot" was lessed out of a deed from Simeon and Frances Otis to Simeon Otis and Kimbrough J. Whitmire doing business under the firm name of Otis and Whitmire at Mulat, Florida. The plat of the town of Mulat bears the date of 1906, showing the locations of the Depot, as well as the post office and other buildings. Indications are that the buildings were probably built during the end of the 19th century or the very beginning of the 20th century.

At the time of his death on April 29, 1929, Simeon Otis was 61 years of age and a wealthy man. Even though he remembered several nieces and nephews, his sister and a sister-in-law very generously in his will, he left his widow as his only heir and very wealthy. The assessment of his personal property such as stocks and bonds, cash on hand and monies owed to him came to a little over $96,000.00. This did not include any real estate (which may or may not have included the mill) that he held at the time of his death. The probate file is voluminous and was not thoroughly researched.

Life had improved for Sim Otis since he left Robinson Point with a horse and buggy and a sailboat. When Sim Otis died, he owned a ferry boat valued at $1,000.00 and 3 Ford cars (one of them new) valued at $725.00 for all three. Not long after Sim died, Fred W. Fisher married Sim's still young and undoubtedly wealthy widow.9

  1. Simeon Otis' tombstone shows a date of birth of 21 Jan 1868 and his sister Linnie Otis Howe's tombstone shows a birth of 18 Feb 1868. As these dates are within a month of each other, there is an error in one or both. The Alma Elaine Payne Culpepper bible supports the 18 Feb 1868 date for Linnie, and while stating that Simeon was her brother, it does not provide his birthdate. The 1870 census shows Simeon as age 7 (born 1863) and Linnie as age 1 (born 1869). The 1880 census shows Linnie as 10 (born 1870), and Simeon as 13 (born 1867). The 1900 census shows Simeon born Jan 1868. Given the relative consistency of Linnie's reported birthyears, the birthdate shown on her tombstone has been assumed herein, whereas, Simeon's birth year is assumed to be 1866, the average of the birth years in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses.

These were grown by Mr. H. C. Dickson, living four miles west of Talbotton.10
1900 Census*1 June 1900 Henry was listed as the head of a family (Henry C. Dickson, W, M, Apr 1827, 73, Md 48 years [sic], GA, GA, GA, Farmer) on the 1900 Census at O'Neals District, Talbot Co., Georgia.11
Death*19 February 1902 He died at Talbot Co., Georgia, on 19 February 1902 at age 74.12
Biography* Soon after coming to Talbot County from Hancock County (sic), Georgia, Henry C. Dickson bought Land Lot 21, Upper 17th Land District, O'Neal's GMD 894. William F. Lennard of Talbot County, sold him the whole land lot and three acres of No. 12, by indenture dated 26 Aug 1853, for a consideration of $1,300. The smaller parcel allowed him access to the public road and he built his house on it.
People who could not afford a frame house when they came to the county to settle, and had spent most of their capital to acquire land, cut trees and built log houses, in hopes of better to come. Henry Dickson built a pioneer style house of logs, two rooms with an open dogtrot between them and stack chimneys of rock and brick at the ends. In his room, he constructed a narrow stair to the sleeping loft above. The dogtrot was later enclosed and made a hall, a front ell room and porch were added, and weatherboarding nailed over the logs.
The 1860 census shows Henry C. Dickson (Dixon) aged 33, with $1,600 of real estate, $5,084 of personal estate. He owned a few slaves, for he had prospered with cotton and other crops. His wife, Mary S., was 27, and their children were Martha S. (Mattie), 3; Julia, one year of age. All were born in Georgia.
It is said of Dickson after death that "no times in 50 years have been so hard that his farm was not self-sustaining." Progressive during the Reconstruction and Farmers' Granges era, experimenting and diversifying, he was also a dairyman, traditionally said to have brought the first Jersey cows to the county.
He bought an undivided half of Land Lot 12 from E. H. Worrill, 7 Jan 1879, and swapped the west half of Land Lot No. 11, which he had acquired, to W. J. Weekes, merchant and planter of Talbotton, for 75 acres bounded on the north and west by Dickson, east by Baldwin, and south by the public road leading from Talbotton to J. H. Gilmer's place. The indenture is dated 1 Jan 1883, "lot number not recollected," but was No. 12.
Henry C. Dickson died Wednesday, 19 Feb 1902, and then owned all of Land Lot 21, 176.5 acres of No. 12, and 101.25 acres of No. 13, total 480 acres, more or less. His obituary appeared the next day in the "Talbotton New Era.":
"At his home five miles west of Talbotton (on what is now Dennis Creek Road), Mr. H. C. Dickson breathed his last yesterday morning at 9 o'clock. The news cast a gloom over Talbotton, as no more honorable man ever lived in the county than Mr. Dickson. He was about 75 years old, and has lived in this county over 50 years, and in that time no one can recall a harsh word that has ever been said against him.
"He served in the war as a Confederate soldier, and there displayed the same calmness of character and fearlessness of spirit that he has shown all his life. Early in life, he joined the Baptist Church, and truly it can be said that he has kept the faith and fought the good fight. His business was never so rushing as to cause him to neglect his church duties.
"He has always been of a retired nature, and unless one was a close friend to him he would never know how to appreciate him fully. Few men who have worked steadily have acquired more knowledge than he possessed. He was one of the best informed men in the county.
"As a neighbor, his place is hard to fill; as a citizen, the county loses one to whom she has long looked to for wisdom; as a church member; his faith marked his footsteps; as a father, and a husband, he was loved for his tenderness of heart and wisdom of head. Truly a good man is gathered to his fathers.
"He leaves three children and a widow: The children are Mrs. McCormick Neal, and Henry L. Dickson, of McIntosh (Marion County), Florida, and David B. Dickson of Talbotton. He was buried today in the family burying ground at his home beside his first wife and eight children who proceeded him to the grave. Our sincerest sympathies go out to the bereaved family in their sad loss."
The Dickson Family Cemetery contained graves within a rock walled plot, marked with a side stone at head and foot. Only a child's grave, Willie Mc. Dickson (1902-1903), son of D. B. and Coral Dickson has a monument.
David B. Dickson was administrator for his father's estate, letters testamentary being granted 6 May 1902. The farm of 480 acres, more or less, was sold by Henry L. Dickson of Marion County, Florida, by indenture dated 29 Nov 1905.6

Biography* Mrs. McCormick Neal Dead
The friends of Mrs. Ella V. Neal nee Dickson will be pained to learn of her death which occurred at her home in McIntosh, Fla., at 11:15 o’clock p.m., Nov. 8th.
She was born in Talbot County May 21st 1854. At the early age of fifteen years, she consecrated her life to God by uniting with the Baptist church. She was married to McCormick Neal, and moved with him to Florida during the winter of 1886.
Since coming among us she has endeared herself to every heart. Her whole life has been one of love and sacrifice. A more devoted wife never lived, and she has proven a mother indeed to her two orphaned nieces. She came to us a healthy, beautiful woman; scattering sunshine in every home, comforting the sorrows of others and giving a helping hand wherever there was need. No sacrifice was too great for her. Her tender ministrations and bright loving ways were felt wherever there was sickness or suffering, and while going on her holy missions for others, her own loved ones were never forgotten.
For several years her health has been failing, but we did not think she would so soon be taken from us. During her last illness she suffered the most excruciating pain, but never a word of complaint or impatience passed her lips. Her whole life has been such a bright Christian example that we can only exclaim, “One more added to the happy host of the redeemed in heaven.” She was laid to rest in McIntosh cemetery.10
