Basil Manly Boykin1
M, (14 January 1869 - 23 January 1947)
Father | Rev. Thomas Cooper Boykin (1 Jan 1836 - 4 Dec 1901) |
Mother | Arabella Harris Alexander (27 Aug 1839 - 2 Oct 1879) |
Birth* | 14 January 1869 | Basil was born at Shelby Co., Alabama, on 14 January 1869.2 |
(Nephew) 1880 Census | 1 June 1880 | Basil was listed as a nephew in Harris Toney's household on the 1880 Census at Madison Co., Alabama.3 |
Letter/Message Text | 6 November 1892 | He was the recipient of a letter or message from Mattie Boykin on 6 November 1892 at Decatur, DeKalb Co., Georgia: Letter from Mattie Boykin [age 35] in Decatur, GA to her step-son, Manly Boykin [age 23] in Lamar, Barton Co., MO. My Dear Manly, You begin to think, no doubt, that I am as slow to reply as you were to write. I have been trying to do so ever since the reception of your letter. I was glad to hear from all and that Eva [Eva Paxton Boykin, 24, sister-in-law of Manly and step-daughter of Mattie] and the children were so much benefitted by their stay in the country. We were moving along in a quiet way, enjoying the baby [Effie/Eleanor Boykin, her daughter who was three days short of one year old], if not everything else that comes into our lives. Narcissa [a reference to Eleanor] has improved very much in so many respects since you were here and is, of course, a growing delight. The "Baby Tender" has been a blessing truly. It has strengthened her limbs and given her a great deal of pleasure. She just runs all about in any direction she wishes -- in the "Tender" I mean. She pulls up by chairs on anything convenient and walks around them some. I do not think it will be a great while before she walks. You know already of Florence's visit and the length of it. [Florence Barnard, age 18]. I have never had any girl visit in the house who was so pleasant in every way. I got better acquainted with her than ever before and love her that much the more. She did not tell you some things about her stay in Decatur that I certainly will not hesitate to tell you. Perhaps you know she spent a day and night at Mrs. Ramspick's. Mr R. told her she had the advantages of Mamie [identity unknown], that she was here, getting on the good side of me, "Jm(?) Manly"! A mean little thing for him to say. Mrs. R. also joined in and said the same thing in a little different way! As if Florence was the kind of girl to do such a thing! Mamie showed her the heart you gave her and told her where she got it -- said she was sorry you did not give her the "love-chain" with it, but she supposed she would get that Christmas! I tell you so you may not disappoint her! She also showed Florence her private "memorial book" and in it a piece of sentimental poetry marked underneath "From B. M. B." They quizzed her to know if you had written to her -- and of course she was too truthful to deny it. Mamie asked her to tell you she would answer your letter in about six months! I wish I could talk with you -- I would tell more than I will write -- some things about the R's that would seem too trivial to write. I want to say some other things to you in all seriousness and affection. I certainly feel a deep interest in your future -- and I trust you will let me speak freely to you. I love Florence, too, and feel more interest in her welfare than when you were here. What I want to say is, that if you do not truly and sincerely love Florence, I want you to let her alone. Don't make her think you love her if you do not. I do not know that you could win her love easily, after those two years of leaving her alone -- but do not try unless you will love her on to the end, as any woman with a woman's heart wants to be loved -- supremely. I feel for Florence, something of the same kind of concern I will for Belle [Belle Boykin, age 18, Manly's sister and Mattie's step-daughter] when the time comes and I tell you I do not want ever you to trifle the least bit with her. Your going to see her the second time, and writing after you go away, with what you said makes it hard for me to conjecture what your correspondence will lead to. And if you do love her, in justice to her, you surely ought not to continue a course that would lead another to think you aren't in love with her. I should have said in justice to yourself -- for I do not see how you can expect the respect of Florence otherwise. Florence would be shocked, no doubt, if she knew I had foreseen to write all this of her -- but it is love for her as well as you that has prompted me. I remember so well, too, the undecided way you spoke of your feelings when here. Since your visit home, I have been more anxious about your future and sincerely interested than before. You understand why. If it seems to you I have gone beyond my privilege in what I have said, that has been my inspiration, and if my words have been out of place in regard to Florence, think no more about them. Belle was sick in bed for several days a few weeks ago, but is well now and seems to be doing well. Your father [Rev. Thomas Cooper Boykin, Mattie's husband and a Baptist evangelist who traveled a great deal] has not been at home more than a few days at a time since you were here. He is well as usual. Give my love to Jim, Eva and the children and include yourself in the division. Sincerely, Miss Mattie [Note: Mattie died just three months later, on 22 Feb 1893, two days after giving birth to Martha Boykin, who later married Harry Stuart Culpepper, Sr. Three weeks after Mattie's death, on 16 Mar 1893, Manly Boykin married Florence Barnard.]. |

Biography* | In 1880 census, Bell Boykin, age 5, born in AL, parents born in GA, was living in the HH of her Uncle Thadius G. Holt (a lime manufacturer, 51, b GA, F&M: b GA) and Aunt Narcissa [Boykin] Holt (wifw, 45, b GA, F: b SC; M: b GA) According to the baby album of Warren Culpepper, Belle Boykin was one of the visitors at time of his birth. Belle was the half-sister of Warren's grandmother, Martha Boykin, and at the time of Warren's birth, she would have been 68 years old. Since she still had the last name of Boykin, she probably never married. --------------- On 21 Jul 2012, Eve Dravecky1 wrote Warren Culpepper: "Belle Boykin lived alone in West Point, Georgia, when my family visited her in March, 1960... She gave me a crystal perfume bottle she had filled and wrapped and which, to her horror, had leaked because the stopper was not air tight. You are correct to surmise she never married. I think she was a nurse." |

Boykin, the Sunday-school evangelist, will be pained to learn that the hand of affliction has been laid upon him again, and his son, Thomas C. Boykin, Jr., snatched away from earth in the bloom of his young manhood. Young Boykin was was loved by all who knew him for the amiability of his disposition and exemplary deportment. In the public schools, none stood higher, or was more universally beloved by teachers and scholars. Ere he reached his majority the "Death Angel" called him to "cross over the river" to the land of eternal rest and perfect bliss. We sympathize with the bereaved father."4,5 |

Death* | 2 December 1902 | He died on 2 December 1902 at age 77. |
Biography* | Isaac Taylor Tichenor, Pastor, educator, home mission secretary (b. Spencer County, Ky., Nov. 11, 1825; d. Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 2, 1902 The son of James and Margaret (Bennett) Tichenor, he was a descendant of Martin Tichenor, said to have been of French extraction, who took the oath of allegiance at New Haven, Conn., in 1644 and was later one of the settlers of Newark, N. J. Martin's great-grandson Daniel, grandfather of Isaac, moved from New Jersey to Kentucky in 1790. At the age of 15 Isaac entered Taylorsville Academy, where he was under two able teachers, Moses and David Burbank, graduates of Waterville College, a Baptist school in Maine, and there received good training. An attack of measles, however, ended his schooling and left him with infirmities which troubled him for a long time. When he was sufficiently recovered, he engaged in teaching in a neighborhood school and was for three years connected with the Taylorsville Academy, as principal the last year. In the meantime, at the insistence of local Baptists, he had begun to preach (licensed Dec. 19, 1846, at Taylorsville, Ky.), and his effectiveness soon won for him the title "boy orator of Kentucky." In 1847 he accepted an appointment as agent for the American Indian Mission Association, and while traveling about in its interest he was called as pastor of the Baptist church in Columbus, Miss., where in 1848 he was ordained. He served there until1850, then preached in revivals in Texas, was in charge of the church at Henderson, Ky., for a little over a year, and on Jan. 1, 1852, began a 15-year pastorate at the First Baptist Church, Montgomery, Ala. There he joined in the movement to establish a Southwide seminary in Greenville, S. C., and in 1860 preached its first commencement sermon. For a year during the Civil War he served as chaplain of the 17th Alabama Regiment-not confining himself strictly to his prescribed duties, for he acquired reputation as a sharpshooter and at the Battle of Shiloh went to the front of his regiment and rallied the wavering lines. Briefly in 1862 he was with Bragg's army as a missionary of the Domestic Board, and the next year took part in creating the Greenville Sunday School Board. In 1863 he became one of the owners of the Montevallo Coal Mining Company in Shelby County, Ala. As its president, in 1867 he began to make geological surveys of what later became the Birmingham mineral region, prophesying the coming greatness of that section of the state. He was one of the first in Alabama to mine coal scientifically with the use of steam machinery. In 1868 he resigned his church in order to devote himself to these material interests, feeling that such a move was in the best interest of the state. The death of his wife, however, caused him to change his plans and return to the active ministry. He accepted a call to the First Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn., in 1871, but the next year returned to Alabama to be the first president of the State Agricultural and Mechanical College, located at Auburn. During the 10 years that he served as head of this institution, he laid a broad and firm foundation for its subsequent development. He studied the agricultural, mineral, and manufacturing resources of the state, and in his many addresses awakened its people to a greater appreciation of them. He foresaw the industrial development which has since taken place and labored to prepare the way for it. Throughout this period he continued to maintain a position of leadership among the Baptists of the South, and in June, 1882, he resigned his collegiate position and became secretary of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, the headquarters of which had recently been moved to Atlanta, Ga. For 17 years he carried on the work of that office with a statesmanship that resulted in great constructive achievements. His leadership virtually saved the Southern Baptist Convention; he stemmed the current that was turning Southern Baptists toward the Northern society (the American Baptist Home Mission Society of New York) and turned it back, strong and bold, toward the Convention; inaugurated extensive work west of the Mississippi; spend about $100,000 on Texas and held the state to the Southern Baptist Convention; developed a definite plan of co-operative support of home mission work through regular giving; established a church building department; originated and sustained Sunday school literature until it was ready to go ahead on its own power under the Sunday School Board organized in 1891-in the face of opposition from the more aggressive and better equipped American Baptist Publication Society of Philadelphia; and made the South a base for world missions. He inaugurated work on the island of Cuba, enlarged the program for Negro education, initiated educational projects in the mountain regions, dealt with problems created by growing industrial centers, and encouraged women's work and Indian missions. In July, 1899, he retired from the chief responsibility of the home mission work and was made secretary emeritus. His health soon began to fail, and, after prolonged suffering, he died at Atlanta.5 |
