Biography* The following obit was glued on the Family Record page of an 1874 Bible belonging to Mary Virginia ("Scrap") Cook, daughter of James Robb Cook (b 1811 d 1883 Troup Co) and Frances Emily Sterling (b 1821 d 1855 Troup Co). The obit is for Dr. Whitmel Sterling, brother of Frances and son of Wiley J. Sterling and Bethany Bonner of Troup Co. Mary Virgina Cook was a spinster and lived her last days in Columbia Co AR with my great grandfather, Thomas Sterling Cook, her nephew through her brother Sterling. The obit is as follows:

"Dr. Sterling Dead". An old and honored Citizen of Atlanta Passes to His Final Reward.

Dr. W. Sterling died at his home, corner of Luckie and Cain streets, yesterday afternoon.

The announcement will carry sorrow to many homes throughout the city, where for twenty-eight years Dr. Sterling has practiced his profession.

He came to Atlanta in 1866 from LaGrange, where he was reared from early boyhood, his birthplace being in Pike county. He leaves a wife and two children by a former marriage, W. E. Sterling of Carrollton, and Mrs. Lily Vorhees, of Atlanta, one brother, Mr. J. R. Sterling, of LaGrange, and many relatives throughout the state, besides legions of friends to mourn his loss.

Dr Sterling was a man of superior intellect and ability, though retiring and unassuming. He was a friend to the affliected, the needy and distressed, and his three score and ten years are filled with countless deeds of love and charity known only to Him who judges all. During the war he was a surgeon of distinction in the confederate army and when he came back from General Lee's surrender penniless it was to locate in Atlanta. He was a gradute of the University of the City of New York, one of the most renowned schools of that day, and was througout his professional career and intimate friend and associate, both socially and professionally, of the late Dr. Willis Westmoreland.

Arrangedments for the funeral have nott been perfected yet, but will be announced tomorrow.

NOTE: There is another very short obit listing pallbearers etc and is as follows:

STERLING - Died, Monday afternoon, May 28, 1894, Dr. Whitmel L. Sterling, in his seventy-second year. Friends of himself and family are invited to attend his funeral services from his late residence, 128 Luckie street, this (Tuesday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The following gentlemen are requested to act as pallbearers and honorable escort; Pallbearers - Messrs. D. Perkerson, Frank Graves, Harry Sharp, W. C. Dodson, E. T. Payne, J. S. Hall, J. H. Stark and T. J. Winn. Escort - Drs. Welborn, Miller, Westmoreland, Biggers, Asher, Clarence Johnson, Stephens, Parks and Hodgson. Please meet at Barclay & Evin's undertaking parlors at 2 o'clock sharp. Interment at Oakland.

Death of an Old Citizen
Mr. James R. (Robb) Cook was born and raised in Fairfield District, South Carolina, but moved to Troup county in early manhood. He departed this life, about midnight, on Friday night, his disease being dropsy of the heart. The sad event occurred at his residence, about seven miles west of Lagrange, near the old Pleasant Grove (Baptist) church. His remains were buried at Long Cane, on Sunday last, at one o'clock, Rev. P. A. Heard officiating at the grave. The citizens of the community generally were present. Mr. Cook was for many years a Baptist , but died a member of the Presbyterian communion. He had been married four times - his first wife having been a daughter of the late Wiley J. Sterling (Note: Frances Emily Sterling b. 5/7/1821 d. 3/31/1855 in Lagrange), the second a Miss Cameron (Note: Martha J. Cameron), the third a Miss Keever (Note: Louisa R. Teaver is correct name), and the last a Miss Darden (Note: Leonora Adella Darden). Five children survive him (Note: From his first wife, Sterling Cook, Mary Virginia Cook, James Cook, Jr. and Francis Marion Cook survived him; there were other children from his other marriages who were living at the time of his death, Algie Cook and Helen Cook in particular from his last marriage; I do not know about any others) . He was seventy years of age (Note: b. 5/14/1811 d. 5/2/1884; which would make him just shy of 73). Thus, "we spend our years as a tale that is told." "The days of our years are three score years and ten, and if by reason of strength, they be four score years, yet is their strength, labor, and sorrow, for is is soon cut off and we fly away." (Note: I have a photograph of James taken sometime possibly in his 30's and on the back my great-aunt wrote that he was married 5 times; however, I have not been able to substantiate a 5th wife who would have probably been his 3rd wife between Martha Cameron and L. R. Teaver.)3

Subject: Bonner/Selman
Alice (Ally) Selman was the wife of Whitmill/Whitmal Bonner who died in Jaspar Co. Ga om 1820/1821. There is some reference material which states Alice was the daughter of Capt John Selman and that he was made guardian of the Bonner children after their fathers death. It is not conceivable that Col John Selman was their grandfather since he was born about the same time as Alice. Most likely he was the children's uncle. At least, that's what the Selmans think. I've been to the courthouse in Jasper Co and looked through the records, but my time was limited. However, I did not find a reference that would clarify the relationship between Capt John Selman and Alice Selman Bonner. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
