Death* | before 1840 | He died before 1840. |
Probate* | circa 1840 | Probate action was taken on Joseph's estate, with James A. Hough as administrator circa 1840.2 |
Biography* | "Joseph Hough shows up on Edgefield Co., SC census records and has been a quandary for (Hough) genealogists. However, when the records of Edgefield Co. are studied, it is clear that Joseph Hough was Joseph Hog (or Hogh) for most of his life. When John Hog (or Hogg) of Edgefield Co. died in 1805, Joseph Hogh, apparent son, was bonded to administer the estate, along with Daniel Baugh and John Baugh. Joseph clearly signed his name as Hogh when he requested to do various things with the John Hog estate. William Hogh, Levi Hogh, Mary Hogh, and other better known persons of Edgefield Co. had transactions with the estate. "Daniel Baugh, Sr., moved to Putnam Co., GA where his will of 16 Mar 1812 (Book A, pp 75-76) mentions son John Baugh and daughter Nancy Hog, among many others of the Baugh family. "Joseph Hogh and his wife Nancy sold land in 1818 in Edgefield Co., SC. In 1820, the family was listed as Hough for the census. In 1830, it was back to Hog. In 1840, widow Nancy and her sons were in Talbot Co., GA, as Hough. It is not known whether other members of the Hog/Hogh families changed their name to Hough. "Joseph Hogh married Nancy Baugh in Darlington Co., Cheraws District, SC by family tradition. They lived in Edgefield Co., SC, and Talbot Co., GA. Joseph's estate was alleged to have been administered in Chambers Co., AL, but this has not been verified. There is a record which shows son James Hough to be the administrator circa 1840. Those receiving from this estate were James, Charles, John B., Daniel B., Joseph, John and Nancy. In addition, James administered the estate of his brother William Hough before that of Joseph. Phonetically, descendants may use 'how' or 'hogue,' but the spelling seems to be Hough."2 |
