Biography* | John Boykin, youngest child of William II, at his father's death was adopted by his eldest brother, Samuel, who donated to him, on his coming of age, a plantation in the Boykin neighborhood. He, like all his bretheren, embarked in the Revolutionary cause, and was commissioned a Captain in Col. Wade Hampton's cavalry regiment. He was among those patriots whom the British distinguished by incarceration in the Camden prison. He rode as a regulator under his brother Samuel. His home, on Swift Creek, was burnt in 1794 with a crop of indigo in the garret. He then sold the place and located across the Kershaw County line in Fairfield, at or near Longtown. He died in Columbia, 1798, while attending the Legislature, of which he was a member from Fairfield, leaving a considerable estate of land and negroes. He possessed the family strong physique, and a prepossessing address. He was twice married, first to a Miss Starke, sister of Reuben Starke. She died a year after marriage without issue. His second wife was Frances Brown, sister of his brother Samuel's wife. Of this second marriage there were three children, John, William and a daughter Frances. William died in 1812, a student at S.C. college, and Frances died at an early age. John T. Boykins's son, John, born 1790, married Charlotte A. Mortimer (granddaughter of John Adamson) He was a man of great personal charm and popularity. He took an interest in public affairs and was in the exciting political contest of 1832 as a candidate on the Nullification ticket for the Legislature. A part of his life was spent in New Jersey, but he returned to South Carolina. His summer home was at COol Spring, where his neighbors were John Chesnut and Benjamin T. Elmore. He died in 1840. His children were a son and daughter, Dr. Edward M. Boykin, who married Mary C. Lang, and whose descendants all reside at or near Camden, and Mrs. Kate L. Heyward, who married Savage Heyward, both deceased.2 |

Biography | Edward Boykin, Jr., son of Edward Boykin I, of Isle of Wight, married Judith, last name unknown, but is said to be a daughter of Richard Wall (Tradition). Richard Walls daughter Judith married William De Loach (See HSF II-99). His daughter Sarah Wall married Francis Boykin, which is probably the reason for this confusion in names. Edward Boykin made his will in Northampton Co., N.C., June 8, 1743. He bequeathed to son Thomas lands lying between Richard Wall and Meadow Branch; son Solomon lands above Meadow Branch, son Hardy, land on Cypress Swamp; son Edward and daughter Rachel Heron. Exrs, wife Judith and son Solomon. Grandson Henry Boykin wits. Charles Campbell, Richard Wall. (Grimes 43) Solomon Boykin, son of Judith and Edward Boykin, Jr., married his wife Ester before leaving Virginia for Georgia, where he petitioned for a grant of 200 acres in March 1765. He stated at that time that "he had been about eight months in the Province of Georgia from Virginia. Had no land granted him in Georgia and was desirous to obtain land for cultivation, having a wife and eight children, prays for 200 acres of land on South side of Briar Creek". In 1766, he petitioned for 300 acres and the Governor granted him 500 acres in St. George's Parish (Col. Rec. of Ga.. Vol. 10, pp. 187, 485). He had previously been granted 120 acres in Brunswick Co., Va., May 9, 1753, on the south side of Fountain Creek by Gov. Dinwiddie. He made his will in St. George Parish Aug. 25, 1770, probated May 31, 1771, and named the following children: 1. Solomon, given 300 acres after death of Mother. 2. Hardy, given 150 acres. 3. Biography* | John Boykin died soon after his father who had given him his plantation of 530 acres "whereon I now live," for John died intestate, as an inventory of his estate, appraised by Frances Williamson, John Dunkley and Edward Harris, was recorded Feb. 23, 1729 (C II-25). Final account of his estate was presented by his brother Edward Boykin, Jr., March 27, 1730-31. (C II-57) (WB 3-255). The present printed records do not show his children, but a search of Isle of Wight deeds should show who deeded his land. The children of his brother Edward William and Thomas have been ascertained. He is said to have married Ann Williamson, but there is no proof. He left descendants in Isle of Wight (See 17c - 210). Francis Boykin of Northampton, N.C., is very probably his son, as he was not a son of any other of the children of Edward Boykin. Francis(3) Boykin [John(2), Edward(l)] was born in Isle of Wight, died in Northampton Co., N.C., in 1761. His will dated August 1, 1761, was probated Sept. Court 1761 (WB I-58). He married first, Millicent Williams; secondly Sarah, daughter of Lucy and Richard Wall. On May 18, 1748, Francis Boykin and Millicent, his wife, deeded John Boykin 290 acres in Northampton (BK 1-340). Richard Wall, father of Sarah Boykin, made his will in Northampton, Feb. 29, 1752, and mentioned among other children, his daughters SARAH BOYKIN and JUDITH DE LOACH (See HSF II-99). Francis Boykin moved to North Carolina before 1727, for James Turner of Isle of Wight, Va., deeded land to Francis Boykin of Bertie, in that year. (Bk B-306). (Source: Athens Daily News/Banner-Herald, Friday, Jan. 21, 2000) Forerunner of UGA's computer science program dies at age 84 A graveside funeral service for Jenkins Comer Whitehead, who established a forerunner of the computer science department at the University of Georgia in the late 1930s, and served as assistant to the university's vice president for business and finance, will be held this morning in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Whitehead died Thursday at the age of 84. Whitehead received a bachelor's degree from UGA in 1936, and three years later, became head of the university's IBM Department, a predecessor of the present-day computer science department. The IBM Department became a model for universities across the country. In 1968, Whitehead was named assistant to the vice president for business and finance at UGA. He retired in 1982, after 46 years at the university. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honorary scholastic society, and a member of Chi Psi fraternity while at UGA. After graduation, from 1936-64, he served as the fraternity's faculty adviser. In 1960, he chaired the committee that raised money to build the fraternity's current house at Wray and Lumpkin streets. In addition to his work with the university and fraternity, Whitehead served for 22 years on the Athens City Council, beginning in 1954. He was chairman of the finance committee eight times during his 22 years of service. During his tenure on the council, he served as chairman of all of the council's standing committees. The Jenkins Comer Whitehead Award is presented to the outstanding Chi Psi Fraternity member each school year. At First United Methodist Church, Whitehead served on the administrative board for 28 years, from 1954 until 1982. Whitehead also served on the local YMCA's board of directors for 10 years. He was treasurer of the YMCA building committee from February 1962 until the completion of the present YMCA on Hawthorne Avenue. John Bondurant, 92, who knew Whitehead through both his church and community work, on Friday called Whitehead ''one of the finest gentlemen I know. He was always outstanding in his accomplishments. We knew each other from college-age on.'' Bondurant particularly remembered Whitehead's work with First United Methodist Church, and his service on the building committee. ''The leader's always crucial,'' Bondurant said. ''He was not the only one, but he did a great job.'' Allan Barber, senior vice president for finance and administration at UGA, said Whitehead helped the university add computers to its offices, and modernize its business practices, across the eras of two UGA presidents. ''He probably was the most important link from the J.D. Bolton era to the Fred Davison era,'' Barber said. And, Barber added, Whitehead's work on the city council made him ''one of the most important people in the community and in the university.'' (Source: Athens Daily News/Banner-Herald, last updated at 8:24 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2000) Athens Daily News, Editorial, January 25, 2000 COMER WHITEHEAD A QUIET BUT EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SERVANT In the arena of public service, there are the flamboyant types who seek out the spotlight. Their efforts often produce more sizzle than substance. Then there are the unassuming ones who remain in the background quietly going about their business and getting things done. Comer Whitehead, a career University of Georgia administrator and longtime Athens City Council memeber, fell into the latter category. Mr. Whitehead, who died last Thursday at the age of 84, was a dedicated public servent, devoting 46 years of his life to his alma mater and serving 22 years on the Athens City Council. At UGA, he was a pioneer in the development of computer technology and later assumed duties as assistant to the vice president for business and finance. On the City Council, he was mayor pro tem in three administrations, chaired the powerful Finance Committee for much of his tenure and headed all of the committees of council at least once during his more than two decades at City Hall. A native of Athens and a product of the local school system, Comer Whitehead was one of a handful of dedicated individuals who helped bridge the gap between Athens and the university, promoting understanding and cooperation between town and gown. Not only was Mr. Whitehead effective as an official of UGA and dthe city of Athens, he was a leader in his church, First Methodist, and remained an influential force in his college fraternity, Chi Psi, throughout his life. Whether serving his town, the university or his church, Comer Whitehead led with a calm dignity and perseverance that served as an example for those around him. He made many lasting contributions to this community. We extend our condolences to his family and friends and share with them a sense of loss at the news of his death.1 |
