Obituary* | 7 March 2004 | AUGUSTA, Ga.- Mr. Daniel William Culpepper, 82, of Augusta, died at the Medical College of Georgia on March 5, 2004. Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 8, 2004 at 12:15 p.m., at Church of The Most Holy Trinity with Fr. Alan McDonald officiating. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park. Survivors include one daughter, Monica Culpepper Heath of Augusta; one sister, Joyce Dee Culpepper of Augusta; one granddaughter, Ashley Elaine Heath. Mr. Culpepper was married to the late, Korrine Krantz Culpepper and the late Betty Ahern Culpepper. Mr. Culpepper served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was a veteran of WWII, He worked with the Georgia Rail Road for 15 years, then he went to work with the U.S. Postal Service where he retired. He was a member of Church of the Most Holy Trinity. Prior Feature Story Appended to the Obituary The nostalgic strains of Tommy Dorsey's 1940 hit, "Do I Worry" filled the room. Soon a vaguely familiar voice joining the orchestra, lilting, phrasing to the meaning of the lyrics, "Do I worry 'cause you're stepping out?" "This wasn't a popular record then, at least not like the Ink Spots version," Dan Culpepper said. "But I always liked something different, and Tommy Dorsey had a young fellow just starting with him that I thought was pretty smooth, so I bought this record." "The singer's name is Frank Sinatra," Dan said in the same tone Alfred Hitchcock might use to deliver the punch line in one of his vignettes. Dan Culpepper, who works for Uncle Sam at the Post Office, can give you details on most of the 3,200 records in his collection, started in 1937. The walls of the library in his home at No. 1 Rhomboid Place in Belvedere, are lined with special cases designed to hold his records, many irreplaceable. All are cross-referenced for easy access, catalogued by orchestras in alphabetical order and notated for vocalists who have subsequently become famous. Jo Stafford: "For instance, the Dorsey record featuring Frank Sinatra al so included a group known as the Pied Pipers. "One of the singers in that group was an unknown girl named Jo Strafford," Dan said. The earliest of his recordings by Frank Sinatra was vocalist for Harry James. "I wasn't interested in him then. In fact, it doesn't really even sound like Sinatra to me," Dan said as he slipped "All or Nothing at All" on his turntable. "This was before T.D. worked with him, and of course Sinatra credits his success to Dorsey," Dan said. "Back then the idol was Crosby, but nobody wanted to try to come up to that. Sinatra had nothing to aim for, like Frank Jr., has now. He just had loads of talent that Dorsey developed. He was great! He was great!" Dan said with obvious enthusiasm. Another star who stirs Dan's enthusiasm is Ella Fitzgerald. "Just listen to her swing, nearly 30 years ago," he said, and started the turntable with an old 78 Victor label issued in 1935. The orchestra was Benny Goodman, and the vocalist, Ella, isn't named. The tune was "Good Nigh t My Love." "This is really primitive for Goodman," Dan said. "Ella Fitzgerald was singing with Chick Webb, who was under contract to Decca at the time; so they couldn't put her name on Goodman's Victor label. Vocalist: "Of course," he added, "that was in the days when every band had a male and a female vocalist who sat in the chair on the front row and smiled until it was time to sing. Ella probably wasn't even under contract; but it would have violated the gentleman's agreement to name her." Dan's collection started by accident, at a time when he didn't even own a record player.3 |
