Wesley W. Huskey1

M, (circa 1846 - )
FatherWilliam T. Huskey1 (c 1824 - )
MotherParmelia Culpepper1 (c 1822 - )
Birth*circa 1846 He was born circa 1846 at Georgia.1
(Household member) 1850 Census1 June 1850 Parmelia, Trusannah, William, John, Ella, Wesley, Buler and Robert listed as a household member living with William T. Huskey on the 1850 Census on 1 June 1850 at Warren Co., Georgia.
(The baby Robert Culpepper shown in this household by the census is otherwise unaccounted for. It seems likely that Ella or Trusannah were not Culpeppers at birth but married William or John, and Robert was the son of this couple. It should also be noted that no girls appeared in Dickinson's HH in 1840 as age 5-10 (which would have been Ella's age bracket), and only 1 girl appeared as age 10-15 (but both Frances and Trusannah were in this bracket). Thus, it might best be assumed that both Ella and Trusannah were born to other parents and married Culpeppers. Given the relative ages, it seems most likely that Trusannah married William and Ella married John. Further, as they are the older couple, Trusannah and William are probably the parents of Robert. However, both John and William married other wives in the 1850's, so if either was the father of Robert and the husband of Trusannah or Ella, it appears that their first wife and child had both died within a few years.

Further complicating the matter, in the 1840 census their were no boys under the age of 15 in Dickinson's HH. Therefore, it would appear unlikely that either William or John were the children of Dickinson.)1

Nancy M. Cullars1,2

F, (circa 1798 - before 1868)
Birth*circa 1798 She was born circa 1798 at Georgia.1
Marriage*1 December 1834 She married Washington Culpepper at Warren Co., Georgia, on 1 December 1834. A woman of Nancy's age appears with Washington, along with a female 15-20, in the 1840 census. That young female is presumably Nancy's child by a previous marriage. Nancy and Washington apparently had no children of their own.2
Married Name1 December 1834  As of 1 December 1834, her married name was Culpepper.1,2
(Principal) 1840 Census1 June 1840 Washington Culpepper was enumerated in the US Census of 1840 on 1 June 1840 at Wilkes Co., Georgia.
(One unaccounted female, age 15-20. She is probably Nancy's daughter, but Washington is too young to be her father.)3
(Household member) 1850 Census1 June 1850 Nancy listed as a household member living with Washington Culpepper on the 1850 Census on 1 June 1850 at Warren Co., Georgia.1
(household member) 1860 Census1 June 1860 Nancy listed as a household member living with Washington Culpepper in the 1860 Census at Quitman Co., Georgia.4

James Culpepper1

M, (circa 1796 - before 1 June 1840)
FatherWilliam Culpepper Jr., of Jones Co., GA (c 1765 - c 1828)
MotherMartha (?) (c 1770 - 1853)
Extinct Surname?* The family branch headed by James Culpepper is believed to have no living male descendants with the Culpepper surname. If you know otherwise, please contact Lew Griffin using the link at the bottom of this page.
Birth*circa 1796 He was born circa 1796.1
(free wh male 16-26) 1820 Census7 August 1820 James and William was probably a free white male, age 16 and under 26, in William Culpepper Jr., of Jones Co., GA's household, on the 1820 Census at Jones Co., Georgia. Unaccounted for are 2 Males 0-10 and 1 Male 10-16..2
Marriage*22 September 1825 He married Amelia Darden at Warren Co., Georgia, on 22 September 1825.3
Jury*12 August 1828 He served on a jury on 12 August 1828 at Warren Co., Georgia.4
1830 Census*1 June 1830 James was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census at Warren Co., Georgia. Otherwise unaccounted for is 1 Male 0-5 and 1 Female 0-5..1
Land Lottery*1832 He had a fortunate draw in the land lottery in 1832 at Warren Co., Georgia,
lot 28/7/3 in what became Murray Co., GA.5
Jury*14 August 1832 He served on a jury on 14 August 1832 at Warren Co., Georgia.6
Death*before 1 June 1840 He died before 1 June 1840.7
Research note*23 May 2004 The ancestry of James Culpepper is unproven. He has been assigned to William and Martha Culpepper as parents because they are the most logical choices, as in the 1820 census they had an otherwise unidentified Male 16-26 in their household. However, James could be the son of William's brother Daniel. More research is needed.

Catherine (?)1

F, (circa 1778 - before 1 June 1850)
Birth*circa 1778 She was born circa 1778.1,2
Married Namesay 1800  As of say 1800, her married name was Culpepper.
Marriage*say 1800 She married Benjamin Culpepper of Laurens Co., GA say 1800.
1820 Census*7 August 1820 Catherine was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census at Laurens Co., Georgia. Unaccounted for are 2 Males 0-10, 2 Females 10-16 and 1 Female 16-26..1
1830 Census*1 June 1830 Catherine was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census at Laurens Co., Georgia. Unaccounted for are 1 Male 0-5, 1 Male 10-15, 1 Male 15-20, 1 Female 5-10 and 1 Female 20-30..2
Miscellaneous*5 July 1830 Catherine Culpepper was allowed by court $3.00 per month for taking care of John W. Culpepper, an illegitimate child.3
Deed*December 1830 She granted a deed in December 1830 at Laurens Co., Georgia,

Katherin Culpepper & Winiford Culpepper to Blake Bridges for $50: 40 acres on Buckeye Creek, 2/5 of the 100 acres where Benjamin Culpepper (Katherin's deceased husband) formerly lived & part of 200 acres granted to John Culpepper (Benjamin's father) in Mar 1786. Wit: Wm. Joyce, Jas. Jones.4
1840 Census*1 June 1840 Catherine was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census on 1 June 1840 at Laurens Co., Georgia.
(Unaccounted for are 1 male 0-5, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female 20-30.)5
Death*before 1 June 1850 She died before 1 June 1850.
Research note*15 May 2004 It is speculated that the name of Catherine's husband was Benjamin on the basis that:
     (1) "Benjamin's Orphans" from Laurens Co. were favorable drawers in the 1832 Gold lottery. They won Lot 1096 in Section 3, District 17. The land was in Bartow (originally Cass) County. Records there should be checked for the sale of this land.
     (2) In Dec 1830, Catherine and Winiford Culpepper sold land on Buckeye Creek where Benjamin formerly lived. This land was part of an original grant to John Culpepper
No Benjamin is otherwise known who fits this profile. All we know about Catherine is from her appearance as a widow with children in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses of Laurens Co., plus the Dec 1830 deed.
There is also no proof that Benjamin is the son of John and Mary Culpepper. However, the Dec 1830 deed makes it clear that Benjamin had lived on land originally granted to John. [W.L.C.]

Book J, page 172. Winiford is assumed to be a daughter of Catherine and Benjamin based upon this deed in which she and Catherine sold land formerly belonging to the deceased Benjamin. Also, there were two otherwise unaccounted for females, age 20-30, in Catherine's household in the 1830 census. One was probably Winiford.

Benjamin Culpepper of Laurens Co., GA

M, (say 1780 - before 1820)
FatherJohn Culpepper of Jones Co., GA (s 1733 - c 1808)
MotherMary (?) (s 1753 - )
Extinct Surname?* The family branch headed by Benjamin Culpepper of Laurens Co., GA is believed to have no living male descendants with the Culpepper surname. If you know otherwise, please contact Lew Griffin using the link at the bottom of this page.
Birth*say 1780 He was born say 1780.
Marriage*say 1800 He married Catherine (?) say 1800.
Land Lottery1805 He had a fortunate draw in the land lottery in 1805 at Washington Co., Georgia.1
War of 1812*between 1813 and 1814 He served in the War of 1812 between 1813 and 1814
(There were two Benjamin Culpeppers serving from Georgia, and it is not clear which of the following records belongs to which of the two possible Benjamin Culpeppers:
Benjamin Culpepper, Georgia Militia 3rd Regiment (Wimberley's)
Benjamin Culpepper, Georgia Militia, Freeman's Squadron's Cavalry.)2
Death*before 1820 He died before 1820
Perhaps Benjamin died in the war.
Land Lottery*1832 Benjamin was the deceased whose orphan(s) had a fortunate draw in the land lottery in 1832 at Laurens Co., Georgia,
lot 1096/17/3 in what became Cass Co., GA, now Bartow Co., GA.3

Henry C. Culpepper of Dooly Co., GA

M, (between 1810 and 1820 - before 1 June 1850)
DNA* The ancestry of Henry C. Culpepper of Dooly Co., GA is unknown. To help determine it, we are seeking a male Culpepper descendant to participate in our free DNA testing project. For more information, go to http://gen.culpepper.com/dna
Research note* The only direct evidence for Henry is an 1840 census record in Dooly Co., GA listing him as "H. C. Culpepper", a Male 20-30 living with a Female 15-20. Also, an 1845 GA State census record in Dooly County showing Henry C. Culpepper with four males in the household, but no males 6-16, no females, and no slaves. His first name is inferred from the fact that his probable wife, Kessiah, had a 4 year old child in the 1850 Dooly Co. census named Henry C. Culpepper. He was once thought to possibly be the son of David and Elizabeth Hogan Culpepper. However, he is not among the named minor children for whom a guardian was appointed following David's death in 1832. Of course, Henry may have been born before 1814 and therefore not a minor at David's death, but there are no unaccounted for males in the hosuehold of David in either the 1820 or 1830 censuses. More research is needed. [W.L.C.]1
Birth*between 1810 and 1820 Henry was born between 1810 and 1820.
Marriage*say 1840 He married (?) Sutton say 1840.
1840 Census*1 June 1840 Henry was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census on 1 June 1840 at Dooly Co., Georgia.2
Marriage*circa 1844 He married Kessiah Sutton circa 1844. Kessiah may have been the wife of H. C. Culpepper, but there is no proof of this. He was in the Dooly Co., GA 1840 census, but in no subsequent censuses. Note that in the 1850 Dooly Co. census, Kessiah had a child named Henry C. Culpepper. However, there is an age discrepancy which raises doubt about this. In the 1840 census, the apparent wife of H. C. Culpepper was age 15-20 (born 1820-1825), but in the 1850 census, Kessiah was age 36 (born circa 1814). Nonetheless, if she were older than her husband in 1840, and just married, then she may have lied about her age to the census taker.
Census*1845 He appeared on the census of 1845 at Dooly Co., Georgia.1
Death*before 1 June 1850 He died before 1 June 1850.
