Samuel Harrison McCoy1
M, (18 January 1815 - 3 July 1898)
| Birth* | 18 January 1815 | He was born on 18 January 1815 at South Carolina.1 |
| Marriage* | say 1840 | He married Amanda Taylor at South Carolina say 1840. Children: Sarah A.,James M., William P., Josephine, born in S.C. Martha born in Georgia and Mary Jane, Edward L. born in Alabama.1 |
| Death* | 3 July 1898 | He died at Cherokee Co., Alabama, on 3 July 1898 at age 83.1 |
| Biography* | From Becky Griffin: Samuel Harrison McCoy was my gggrandfather's brother. He was born in Pendleton District, SC, which later (1828) became Anderson County. Samuel was the son of James M. McCoy, Sr. and Sophia Mayfield McCoy. He was probably named for James's brother, Samuel, and neighbor and close friend, Harrison Latimer, who witnessed James, Sr.'s will in 1843. James McCoy is as far back as we have been able to trace, but Sophia Mayfield McCoy was the daughter of Abraham Mayfield and Dorcas Bishop. The siblings of Samuel Harrison McCoy were: Margaret (Peggy) b. abt 1809 Dorcas b. abt 1811 (married John C. Griffin) Catherine, b. abt 1813 James M., Jr. abt. 1814-1880 (Samuel) Ephraim V. abt. 1820-1865 Kelsey Callaway (My gggrandfather) 1822-1901 Sarah Elizabeth (Sally), b. abt 1824 From information obtained from Ron Johnson, who I believe also descended from Edward L. McCoy, I have the following: Samuel and Amanda moved from near Belton in Anderson Co., SC, accompanied by two of Samuel's unmarried sisters. They eventually settled in Cherokee Co., AL, on a 240 acre tract of land that would later become known as Jamestown, where they were farmers. It is apparent from the locations of their childrens' births that they left SC between 1847 and 1849 and traveled to Georgia, where they remained until moving to Alabama in 1857. Samuel died in Jamestown, Cherokee Co., AL, on July 3, 1898 and is buried in the Mosley Cemetery there. Amanda died Aug. 15, 1899, also at Jamestown and is buried beside her husband. Children Mary Jane and Edward are buried nearby. The children of Samuel and Amanda shown on the 1860 Census are: Sarah A., b. abt 1841 in SC James M., b. abt 1843 in SC William P., b. abt. 1845 in SC Josephine, b. abt 1847 in SC Martha, b. abt. 1849 in GA Mary Jane, b. 10/11/1857 in AL. Died 10/20/1937 in Cherokee Co., Buried in Mosley Cemetery. Nancy J., b. abt 1857 in AL Edward Lawrence, b. 6/8/1860, d. 1/8/1928 in Jamestown, AL. Edward first married Martha J. (Mattie) Clark, daughter of Harrison James Clark and Nancy Lucinda McGee Clark. (This family was also from Anderson, SC) Mattie bore him three sons and one daughter who died in infancy. Mattie died 8/15/1890 from Thyphoid Fever and is buried in the Clark Family Cemetery at Broomtown. On 11/21/1891, Edward married Mary Jane Weaver who died within two years. His third wife was Lexstella T. (Lexie) Bankston, whom he married 12/29/1893. His remaining 9 children were born to this marriage. All of his children are believed to have been born near Jamestown, where he was a farmer. Edward and Lexie are buried in Mosley Cemetery in Jamestown. The burial place of Mary is not known. The McCoy family history reports that two of the sons of Samuel and Amanda left to fight in the war and did not return. These were apparently James and William. The last time I "spoke" to Ron Johnson was about a year ago. The info I sent Ron at that time was about Amanda Taylor. Although I cannot remember why, I had reason to believe that her father might have been Micajah Taylor---seems like he had had some affiliation with the Anderson McCoys, but had died at an early age. I would love to know which sisters traveled south with Samuel. He had a cousin, daughter of Samuel McCoy (James Srs. brother), who had traveled south some years earlier and had died in AL. Her name was Frances. She married William Amos (Buck) Trussell in Anderson. The name "Lawrence" seems to occur frequently in the Anderson Co. McCoy families, as does Dorcas, Frances, and Josephine. I have been unable to determine who "Lawrence" or the Lawrence family is.2,3 |
