Birth* | 17 October 1830 | He was born on 17 October 1830 at Marion Co., Georgia.1 |
Marriage* | 8 September 1853 | He married Cynthia Ann Peavy on 8 September 1853 at age 22. |
Civil War* | between 1862 and 1863 | He served in the War Between the States between 1862 and 1863.1 |
Death* | 10 July 1863 | He died at Funkstown, Washington Co., Maryland, on 10 July 1863.1 |
Biography* | Katherine Lanier Ricker wrote on 9 Nov 2005: "William B. Pearce was a son of Peter Pearce. Peter Pearce was born 1801 in Somewhere Mysterious, SC. He and his family migrated to GA while Peter Pearce was a very young boy. "William B. Pearce and Cynthia Ann Peavy had two children: Peter Littleton Pearce (Feb 11 1861) and William Thomas Pearce (Aug 27 1862). Both were born in Thomas County GA as Peter Pearce had brought the entire family down to Thomas County from middle GA during the 1850s. They were all living there near Big Creek during the 1860 Census.... Peter Pearce donated the land for the Big Creek Church and Cemetery and, of course, he is buried there. "Cynthia Ann Peavy Pearce, being widowed, married James Appleton Parramore and had several children by him. In 1870, William B. Pearce's two sons were with their mother and step-father, as documented by the census. William B's children are in James Parramore's house with their mother Cynthia Peavy Pearce Parramore: Thomas, District 637. Household # 60/62 James Parramore, 34 Cynthia, 37 Thomas J., 12 Eliza Jane, 10 Nancy, 9 Peter Pierce, 9 William Pierce, 8 Dorothy Parramore, 3 Cora Parramore, 2 "During the 1880 Census, Peter Littleton and William Thomas Pearce were living with all the other Pearces over at Big Creek. "Peter Littleton Pearce married Martha Jane White, dau of Joseph Goodine & Sarah Caroline Wheeler White. Martha Jane White and Peter Littleton Pearce were married January 19, 1887. Among their children was Walter Hugh Pearce (November 29, 1898 - November 14, 1936 (killed in a motorcycle accident while off-duty)). "Everyone" knows Walter Hugh married F(T)oleda Ellen Culpepper. The problem is that no one can find her, other than her name being listed in the "Thomas County Marriages" book by Craigmiles, which reportedly does have many inaccuracies. Nonetheless, my cousin Paul Pierce who has done extensive research into our family, did document that Walter Hugh & F(T)oleda were divorced in Thomas County on April 18, 1926...."1 | |
Research note* | 9 November 2005 | Katherine Lanier Ricker wrote: "Peter and Mary Burk Pearce were my ggggrandparents. I have certainly done research on our Pearces and related families, but the first, comprehensive effort was done by Paul Pierce, a direct descendant of William B. & Cynthia Ann Peavy Pearce. I have merely added on to the work done by Paul. I descend from Peter & Mary Burk Pearce through their daughter, Dorothy Tamer Pearce Mathis, whose daughter, Mary Ellen, married Marion Bruce 'Dock' Lanier. Marion Bruce 'Dock' Lanier had one brother who survived the Civil War, Gibson Lanier. Uncle Gip married his cousin, Elizabeth Sloan. Gibson & Elizabeth Sloan Lanier's daughter, Priscilla, married William Thomas Pearce, son of William B. & Cynthia Ann Peavy Pearce. Paul Pierce is greatgrandson of William Thomas & Priscilla Lanier Pearce. So, Paul Pierce and I are double cousins..."1 |

Biography* | 23 June 2003 | Oral history interview with Sally Culpepper. Interviewed by Mike Moncus on June 23, 2003 at the Troup County Archives. Description: Sally Lane Culpepper was born to Dr. Joe E. Lane and Sarah Ferrell Ridley, both from LaGrange; her father practiced medicine in downtown LaGrange. Dr. Frank M. Ridley, her maternal grandfather, was mayor of LaGrange, and the chief surgeon of the Atlanta and West Point Railroad. Her husband, William Burt Culpepper, was born in Valdosta, but moved with his parents to LaGrange. She graduated from LaGrange High School in 1930, and LaGrange College in 1934. The Culpeppers had two children, Sally Culpepper Macomber, a resident of LaGrange, and William Burt Culpepper, Jr., who lives in Denver, Colo. For forty-one years, Sally Culpepper owned Culpepper Realty and Insurance Company. Now retired, she remains active in several cultural and historical organizations. She continues to reside in LaGrange. Interview Synopsis: Sally Lane Culpepper outlines her Troup County ancestry and education. She attended Harwell Avenue Elementary School, and graduated from LaGrange High School in 1930. She won the Miss LaGrange beauty pageant [1930?]; though her mother banned her from participating in any other pageants. She graduated from LaGrange College in 1934; that same year, she married William Burt Culpepper, a Georgia Tech graduate who ran a wholesale grocery business in LaGrange with his father. He sold the business in 1959 and went into the insurance business. Sally was urged by a realtor friend, Harrison Preston, to become a real estate broker, she then went into the real estate business for herself, and established Culpepper Realty and Insurance Company with her husband. She recalls being the first woman real estate broker (and perhaps businesswoman) in LaGrange, noting that her male colleagues resented her when she first started out; but that she did well for herself in spite of it. After forty-one years of work, she sold her business to Betty Locke, and now spends her time volunteering with the First Baptist Church, the LaGrange Cotillion Club, the Troup County Historical Society, and the Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum. She ends by saying that she enjoys playing bridge, and is glad that she wouldn't want to live anyplace other than LaGrange.3 |
