On 30 Sep 1942 he is shown in its muster role as a Seaman 3C, and apparently he was still assigned to the Hornet when on 26 Oct 1942 it was sunk in the Pacific during the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands.      William L. "Bill" Culpepper, 55, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in a local hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Culpepper was a native of Westlake, and he lived there for 20 years. He was a Carlyss resident for the past 25 years. He was a 1966 graduate of Westlake High School. He was a maintenance supervisor for Arch Chemicals for 28 years.
     Survivors include his wife, Pamela L. Culpepper; one son and daughter-in-law, Leonard J. and Donna Culpepper; three sisters, Sue and husband, Frank Snyder, Mary and husband, Jim Barker, and Janet and husband, Jerry Landry; three brothers, John Culpepper, Paul and wife, Anna Culpepper, and David and wife, Helen Culpepper; one granddaughter, Lillian Culpepper; in-laws, Patrick and Lilli Landry; sisters-in-laws, Bonnie Perkins and Robyn LeBato and husband, Rick LeBato; and 17 nieces and nephews.
     His funeral will be at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 21, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Alan Trouille will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery. Visitation is from 8 a.m.
