William Leonidas Hood
M, (4 April 1859 - 24 July 1894)
Father | William Riley Hood (s 1834 - Jun 1863) |
Mother | Sarah Elizabeth Miller (Jan 1836 - 12 Dec 1897) |
Birth* | 4 April 1859 | He was born on 4 April 1859 at Randolph Co., Alabama. |
Death* | 24 July 1894 | He died at Randolph Co., Alabama, on 24 July 1894 at age 35 "COL. WILLIAM LEONIDAS HOOD. This splendid young man was born in Randolph county, Alabama, April 4th, 1859, and was called unto his reward by his Lord and Saviour on the evening July 24th, 1894. Talking and writing about the dead has been the greatet embarassment of my ministerial life. Relatives and friends expect that their loved ones will be spoken of only in terms of high eulogy, and less than this will not please them; indeed, may displease them. "To speak of the life and attainments of Col. Hood is a real pleasure to me. I have known him from his very birth, and he was more than an ordinary boy, more than an ordinary man, at every point of view. He descended from a line of Godly fathers. His grand father was one of the early settlers in Tallapoosa county, and was a deacon in the Baptist church and distinguished himself for his piety and zeal in the cause of his Master. Nothing that he had was hid from his church or pastor. His name was William, and he was familiarly known as 'Uncle Billy.' Thus came his son--William Riley Hood---and he was like his father, full of faith and good works, and then came his son--our late lamented Col. William Leonidas Hood--and he too, walked in line with his fathers... "...His father was slain in battle while his son was yet a stripling, leaving him as father to the family and without money or property; and yet, in the face of every force of obstacle he was not discouraged, and rose steadily before God and men, never forgetting to take care of mother and her family. He was a Sunday school boy from the first, and was so studious and manly that he attrracted the attention of Uncle George Roberson--an educated and broad-minded christian--and he advanced the youth to his Bible class in the school and became his instructor and companion for years. While young he was converted and joined the Baptist church, of which he was a faithful and active member during the remainder of his life. Shortly before his death, his church at LaFayette ordained him a deacon. "But to return to his youth--as manhood approached, young Hood appreciated the want of education, and struggled bravely for his own development, and with enviornmnet that hindered rather than helped him. "Being a youth of much native mental ability, and applying himself with unceasing industry, he accomplished in the schools in a few years more than most men accomplish. In the year 1885 he was admitted to the bar and settled in the town of Ashland, Alabama. He remained there about four years and was successful from the first, and in these few years became one of the most loved and trusted citizens of the town and county. In the year 1889 he moved to the beautiful little city of LaFayette, where from the first he rose strictly in the esteem of his fellow citizens--as he had done at Ashland--until he was reckoned and loved as one of her best and most useful citizens in both state and church... "....In his marriage with Miss Imogene Disharoon in 1886, two orphans were made one. Both had similar histories. Fatherless, she had struggled against poverty, had broken the walls of her unfavorable environment, and conquering circumstances had developed into a cultivated young woman--a clear-headed and clean-hearted young woman--loved and honored by her many friends. "She attrracted the attention and challenged the admiration of the ambitious young man, and he attracted her by his brave and indomitable life. Each were the architects of their own fortunes, so far as mere human efforts attain such ends, and each thanked God continually for his grace without which both acknowledge that they could not have been what they were.... "...God had blessed the union of brother and sister Hood with three children, two of whom are living--Shaffer and Wlliam... "...Affectionately, John P. Shaffer" (p. 29). *** Three more eulogies appear on p. 30. One of them was written by "W.C.B." whom I am guessing was Rev. W. C. Bledsoe D.D. "W. L. Hood was born at Mellow Valley, Ala., April 4th, 1859, and died at his home in LaFayette, Ala., July 24th, 1894. He was marreid to Miss Imogene Disharoon September 1st, 1886, who, with two chidlren, survive him. He also leaves a mother, two sisters, Mrs. Allene Dean, Ashland, Ala. and Miss Zera Hood, Birmingham, Ala., and one brother, Mr. J. L. Hood, who resides in Texas. Another one (p. 30) states: "The funeral services will be conducted this (Wednesday) afternoon at the Baptist church at 4 o'clock by his beloved pastor, Rev. W. C. Bledsoe, D.D., assisted by Rev. Jno. P. Shaffer, D.D., the friend of his youth and early manhood... "...After the funeral services at the church the Knights of Pythias will take charge of the body, which will be interred according to the ceremonies of that order." Another eulogy on p. 30 was written by W. H. H. Peek of Lucust Grove, Ga. *** Source: ALLIE ABERNATHY'S SCRAPBOOKS 1893-1923: Marriages, Deaths and Other Items from Chambers County, Alabama Newspapers, compiled by Laura Alabama Floretta Abernathy.
