Biography*1 December 2012 M. P. Jones wrote on 1 Dec 2012:

[Grace] was my Great Grandmother. I remember her well. Her birth name was Grace Elizabeth Kirby. Your birth and death dates are correct. Her life was pretty complicated.

She was born Grace Elizabeth Kirby, 11 April 1890, if I recall, just barely in Virginia near Metompkin Bay, in Accomack County, very close to the Maryland border on the Eastern Shore. The family was from Maryland and returned and stayed. I think both parents were from Maryland's Eastern shore. Her parents were Rev. Loftus Kirby and Evalina Richardson. She had at least 2 other sisters and maybe one brother. Most of her working life she was an itinerant milliner and seamstress. She was the eldest daughter.

Her first husband was Donald F. Parker of Danville. She was his second wife. They got married sometime after 1910.

They had 2 children, Helen Margaret Parker b. 1915 in Marion, Smyth, Virginia. (my grandmother) and,
Donald F. Parker, Jr. b abt 1918, born in Unknown, Virginia

(Donald F. Parker, Sr had another child in his first marriage, Julia Glenn Parker, in Marion, Smyth, Virginia. The mother was Julia Francis of Marion, Va. She died in childbirth of Julia Glenn Parker leaving Donald F. Parker a widower.)

Before going to Marion, one of Grace's first milliner jobs I believe was in NC after leaving her family in MD.

1910 She'd either be in NC or Marion, Smyth, Virginia. By 1915 she was in Marion when my grandmother was born.

In 1920, she should be in Scottsville, Fluvanna, Virginia listed as Elizabeth K. Parker with her husband Donald F. Parker, her step-daughter, Julia Glenn Parker, my grandmother, Helen Margaret Parker, and her son Donald F. Parker, Jr. I think ancestry.com transcribed the K to an R on indexing her. He should be listed as a miller and she, as keeping house.

Sometime in the 1920's her son Donald F. Parker, Jr. dies, she divorced Donald Parker, Sr., then married a Mr. Hume, and had no children. Things did not work out and she got divorced sometime in the early 1930's. I know only that from oral history.

In 1930, you should catch her living in a boarding house, in Bridgeville, Delaware as a garment worker with her only daughter, my grandmother, Helen Margaret Parker when grandmom would have been 15 years of age. Here she would most likely be listed as Grace Hume. This is not far from where she grew up on Maryland's eastern shore.

Then sometime, I think in the 1940's, Grace Elizabeth Kirby marries her third husband, Zollie N. Culpepper, had no children and died in Zebulon, Wake, NC in 1966. Family oral history says that she had known Zollie in one of her earlier travelling milliner assignments near Winston-Salem, NC. Both supposedly reunited after divorces. On July 13, 1966 Great grandmother Grace had a stroke in Zebulon, was rushed to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, and was dead on arrival. She had had a few minor strokes before that and last ambulated with a walker. Zollie or Grandfather Culpepper as we called him had died about 6 years earlier.1
