Obituary* | 18 March 2007 | Robert Charles (Charlie) Culpepper, an Air Force veteran who served in Korea and Vietnam, died Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Sitka Community Hospital, Sitka, Alaska. He was 74. He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton J. Culpepper in 1950 and his mother, Mattie (Jones) Oubre in 2003. He is survived by his wife, Quinnia Culpepper, 717 A St., Sitka, Alaska 99835-7229; sons, Dennis (Telma) of Carabella, Fla., Toby (Sherrie) of Green County, Miss., Glenn (Debra) of Hurley, Miss; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Edna (Woody) Woodfin of Risharon, Texas; two brothers, Joe (Betty) of Pascagoula, Miss. and Jimmy (Trish) of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. At his request, no funeral services will be held, but a celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date. He had requested cremation, with his ashes scattered in Katlian Bay, his favorite fishing place. He was born June 3, 1932, in Why Not, Miss., the second of four children. His family moved to Pascagoula, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast when he was eight, and he grew up in the small community of Bayou Casotte, as did his wife, Quinnia (Wise) Culpepper. The two were wed in Bayou Casotte in 1955 and were married for 51 years. After 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, having served in Korea and Vietnam, he worked as a gunsmith. In 1989, after his retirement, the Culpeppers moved to Sitka where she was employed as a nurse at Sitka Community Hospital. He enjoyed the hunting and fishing in Alaska and continued his gunsmithing. His particular love was antique muzzle loaders, which he shot in competition. He used a lathe to make parts for restoration of antique firearms. His artistic talents included painting, sculpture in wood and metal, bronze casting, gold and silver inlay, checkering designs, skills and hobbies to numerous to list. Charlie leaves his family and many friends who saw in him the unique person he was.3 |
