Herman Keihling1

M, (circa 1873 - )
Birth*circa 1873 He was born circa 1873 at Arkansas.1
Research note*17 March 2010 Judy Healer wrote: "Herman Keihling was born in Arkansas about 1873. Herman's father was Herman Kaehling (Keiling) and born in Prussia. He had a sister named Freda Augusta Keahling. I know the spelling of this last name takes many turns. Freda Augusta Keahling was my grandmother and married James Gabriel Choate in Yell County, Arkansas. She died about 1937 in Young County, Texas.

"Back to the Hermans -- Herman, born in Prussia about 1828 and came to US through New Orleans in 1852. Apparently made it to St Louis, MO and was a shoemaker there. He was a member of the Missouri 15th Infantry Company C (Union) during the Civil War. He somehow wound up in Yell County, Arkansas in 1870 and is listed there as Herman Kaehling and is listed on the voter registration rolls. He had at least 2 children, Herman and Freda. The mother of these 2 children evidently died at a very early age and left the 2 orphaned. I know that Freda was reared by the Lum Satterfield family in Yell County.

"By 1887 Herman (the older one) was in a Home for Veterans in Leavenworth, Kansas and remained there until 1905. That is where I lose trace of him."1

F, (8 November 1938 - 20 December 2012)
FatherEarl Weston Strawser1 (27 Dec 1892 - 14 Jan 1968)
MotherNina Lewis1 (27 Jun 1913 - 2 Jan 2001)
Birth*8 November 1938 She was born on 8 November 1938 at Bakersfield, Kern Co., California.1
Married Name23 September 1961  As of 23 September 1961, her married name was Menzies.1
Death*20 December 2012 She died at Mariposa, Mariposa Co., California, on 20 December 2012 at age 74.1
Obituary*27 December 2012 Glenda Strawser Menzies was born Nov. 8, 1938, and passed away Dec. 20.

The daughter of Earl Weston Strawser and Nina J. Lewis, Glenda had a life of adventure almost as soon as she was born, moving all over California with her parents and even becoming the toddler mascot of a silver mine in Nevada. She was an avid horsewoman who loved and cared for all living things. She taught her children to regard all people as their brothers and sisters and support the civil rights which were her passion.

A fan of Mahalia Jackson's gospel and The Platters' rhythm and blues, she loved to sing, like her songwriter dad, and performed with the Sweet Adelines. She was a life-long resident of California who enjoyed anything to do with history, for years she was a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, and took a more than passing interest in her family's long American heritage, from Pennsylvania Germans to Mayflower Pilgrims to cotton planters in the deep south. She was especially proud of her southern great-great-grandfather who crossed enemy lines to fight for the Union Army and an end to slavery. She was a mother and a friend to her family and to many others. She was brave, funny, protective, open minded, kind hearted. Mom was everything.

Mrs. Menzies was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Gordon Earl Strawser.

Glenda is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ronald Menzies of Mariposa; daughter, Ronda Menzies of Mariposa; son, Sean William Menzies of Burbank; son and son-in-law, Grant and Les Hayter-Menzies of Sidney, British Columbia; nephews, Duane Earl Strawser of Grass Valley, Robert John Menzies of Portland, ME and Scott Menzies of Fort Bragg; nieces, Alisa Ann Ellenburg of Greeneville, SC, Robyn Menzies Porter of Merced, and Marlene Strawser Shumaker of Upper Sandusky, OH; and sisters-in-law, Jennie Verley of Mariposa, Joanne Beeson Fleetwood of West Columbia, SC and Posie Sutton-Lieder of Tollhouse.

A celebration of Glenda's extraordinary life will take place in the spring. Instead of flowers, donors are asked to make a donation in Glenda's name to the animal rescue charity of their choice.2
