Jacob Otis Jr.1

M, (1795 - 11 July 1856)
FatherDr. Jacob Otis Sr.1 (5 Nov 1758 - 5 May 1850)
MotherSarah Smith Barker1 (c 1762 - Nov 1821)
Birth*1795 He was born in 1795 at Providence, Providence Co., Rhode Island.1
1820 Census*7 August 1820 He was enumerated in the US Census of on 7 August 1820 at Providence, Providence Co., Rhode Island.2
City Directory*1826 He was listed in the 1826 city directory for Providence, Providence Co., Rhode Island. Truckman, living on South Water St.3
1850 Census*1 June 1850 He was enumerated in the US Census of 1850 - Free at Providence, Providence Co., Rhode Island.
(Living in an asylum for paupers).4
Death*11 July 1856 He died at Providence, Providence Co., Rhode Island, on 11 July 1856.1,5
Biography* Jacob Jr.'s story is a sad tale. His first child was born when he was only 15 years old. He worked as a teamster, but in December 1820, he was insolvent and owed money to a list of debtors as reported in the Providence Patriot. This announcement of debtor notification also appeared in January 1821. During the same month, he lost his four-month old son, William Barker to death. The child's middle name, Barker, helps us to connect to his grandparents as his grandmother's name was Sarah Smith Barker.
He may well have lost his wife around this time, perhaps in childbirth, as there is no record of her, and there were no more children born after this date. Jacob Otis' misfortunes continued and he was committed to an Asylum due to alcoholism for one year in May 1828.
It is reported in the Otis Family in America that Jacob was a doctor, also the son of a doctor. However, besides this unsubstantiated claim, there is no evidence that Jacob Jr. was a doctor as his occupation was always reported to be a teamster. By 1835, Jacob's father (who was a doctor), a sister, and his son Sylvester, had all left the state.1,6
