Matthew Cushing1

M, (circa March 1588 - 30 September 1660)
Ancestry Unknown* Information about the ancestry and siblings of Matthew Cushing is wanted. See page footer for contact information.
Birth*circa March 1588 He was born circa March 1588 at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England.
The history of the Cushing family is traceable in England for several generations before either Pilgrim or Puritan set sail for America. A Thomas Cushing owned land in Hing. and other parts of Eng., early in the fifteenth century. William, the oldest son of Thomas, commenced his will of 1492 as follows: —’In the name of god Amen, The xx Day of the moneth of Septembr, in the yere of or lord god M'cccclxxxxij, I William Cusshyn of Henghm in my hoel mend And good memory beying, make my testament and my last will Declare in this forme Folloyng;’ etc. John, son of William, made his will in 1522. Thomas, son of John, died at 1588. Peter, son of Thomas, was buried at Hingham, England, 2 March, 1596; he was the father of eight children, five sons and three daughters. Of the sons of Peter, Theophilus and Matthew emigrated to New England. Theophilus came in 1633, in the ship Griffin, and resided several years at Haynes farm. He afterwards settled in our Hingham; was blind during the last twenty-five yrs. of his life, and d. 24 March, 1678-79, aet. nearly 100 yrs. There is no record showing that he had a family. With Matthew, therefore, the genealogical record of all the persons bearing the surname Cushing in Hingham and vicinty, and perhaps in the United States, commences.1,2
Baptism2 March 1589 He was baptized on 2 March 1589 at Hardingham, co. Norfolk, England.3
Marriage*5 August 1613 He married Nazareth Pitcher at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, on 5 August 1613.1,4
Immigration*1638 He and Nazareth Cushing immigrated in 1638 to Hingham, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, on the Diligence with their five children.1
Biography* For the first fifty years of his life Matthew lived in Hardingham and Hingham, Norfolk County, England, until 1638, when whith his wife and five children, and his wife’s sister (Widow Francis Riecroft, who died a few weeks after their arrival) he embarked in the ship Diligent of Ipswich, 350 tons, John Martin, master, which sailed from Gravesend 26 Apr 1638 with its 133 passengers, among whom was Robert Peck, M.A., Rector of the parish of Hingham, Eng. The immediate occasion of their departure seems to have been trouble in eccleasiastical matters. Their rector, doubtless with the sympathy and aid of most of those constituting the emigrating party, had pulled down the arils of chancel and altar, and levelled the latter a foot below the church, as it remains to this day. Being prosecuted by Bishop Wren, he left the Kingdom, together with his friends—who sold their estates at half their real value. The party, having landed at Boston, Mass., 10 Aug 1638, immediately proceeded to their destination, Hingham, Mass., named after Hingham, Eng. At a town meeting held 1638, a house lot of five acres, first below Pear Tree Hill, on Bachelor (Main) St., was given to Matthew Cushing, and it continued in the possession of the family until 1887. He was engaged in the public affairs of the town, became a deacon in Rev. Hobart’s church, and was the progenitor of many eminent descendants.3
Death*30 September 1660 He died at Hingham, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, on 30 September 1660.1,2
Burial*1 October 1660 His body was interred on 1 October 1660 at Old Ship Cemetery, Hingham, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.1
Probate15 November 1660 Probate action was taken on Matthew's estate on 15 November 1660

His will, which was a verbal one, was written out after his decease by his children, who, under date of 15 Nov. 1660, pray that Daniel Cushing, Esqr., their oldest brother may be appointed administrator of their father’s est.2

Dea. Thomas Loring1

M, (say 1600 - 4 April 1661)
Biography* “Deacon Thomas Loring, founder of the American family, was born at Axminster, Devonshire, England. So much his grandson, Rev. Israel Loring, learned from his father and left on record. But neither the name of his father, mother or any ancestor has come down to us. ... the parish registers of Axminster are sadly defective and wills thus far examined [1917] fail to show the origin of the pioneer.” (Pope)

“Thomas, came from Axminister, County of Devon, Eng., 23 Dec. 1634, and resided for a short time at Dorchester, Mass. Thence he removed to Hingam, and Sept. 18, 1635, drew a house-lot on Town (North), near what is now the corner of Ship St. He was made freeman 3 March, 1635-36; was early a deacon of the church in Hing., and was the progenitor of the families bearing this surname by birth in eastern Mass., and prob. throughout New England. On Marh 15, 1645-46, his dwelling-house was destroyed by fire. He subsequently removed to Hull, where he d. intestate, 4 Apr. 1661.”2

In 1637 Thomas was licensed by the General Court as an innkeeper; in the same year, he, with some of his neighbors, built a fish weir at Weir River. In Hull, he was a Constable, an office whih then included the duties of Court Officer and Tax Collector. In 1660 he purchased a valuable property in Hull of Thomas Chaffee including rights in all the islands belonging to the town of Hull, with the exception of Peddocks’ Island. He became a stockholder in the new plantation at Seakonk (Rehoboth), but did not move there.3

Thomas, of Axminster, Devonshire, amde with his wife and Jane and sons Thomas and John to New England, at the plantation at Dorchester 23 Dec 1634, where he remained only a short time. They went to Hingham where on 18 Sep 1635 he drew a house lot on the north side of what is now Ship Street. He was admitted freeman 3 Mar 1636, and soon became a deacon of the church. In 1646 his house was burned, and he moved to Hull.4

“Thomas Loring and his son John Loring are both found in the 1657 listing of early planters in Hull. Thomas had a four acre lot and adjoining meadow, abutting the Sound (now [1989] called Nantasket Roads) and land of Samuel Ward, on Further Hill. WHen his son John married in 1657 Thomas bought for him the land of Ralph Greene on Further HIll, between Thgomas Chaffee and Thomas Collier, where, on Town (now Spring) Street, the landmark ancient cape-style home is still standing. It is difficult to visualize this small building housing John Loring, his wife, and fifteen children! The large Loring families were prominent in the town [of Hull], and remained into the 20th century. IT is the only one of the original families to represent Hull in both the Revolutionary and the Civil Wars.” (Smith.)5,6,1
