LEWISIANA
or The Lewis Letter
The Lewisiana or The Lewis Letter was published from 1893 to 1907 with some gaps in publication. It was edited by Carll Lewis in Elliot, Conn. It covers genealogical information for a wide range of families with the surname Lewis. The family information is divided into separate lineages named after the earliest known ancestor of a particular group. Each lineage is known as a Book and is given a Book number. Each issue of Lewisiana contains articles about several separate families and each article is preceded by it's Book number. For example all articles printed over the years concerning the line of John Lewis of Westerly are considered Book VIII, and that heading precedes each article in any issue. (Book I was the line of Randall Lewis. It was eventually subsumed into Book VIII, Randall being found to be descended from John.) Because Carll Lewis was of this lineage, as I am, he honored his family with a separate printing of the gathered articles about John Lewis of Westerly and descendents. There is a link below to this Book. All files are in PDF format and can be downloaded by clicking on each link.
The issues gathered here are merely those that were available at my local library. A great many more are missing. But these make great reading, may contain information about your family and interesting information about other Lewis families
Lewis Burial Ground #1, Westerly, RI
This is the family cemetery of John Lewis of Westerly and his family and neighbors. John was a founder of the town of Westerly, RI, first known as Misquamicut. He was buried on the family farm near the banks of the Pawcatuck in 1690. This farm was eventually sold to the Kenyon family and then to others. There are an estimated 60 burials here including Barber, Babcock, Card, Sisson. Unfortunately in 1925 the land, then owned by the George C. Moore Co. was paved for construction, destroying the cemetery. The Lewis family has made efforts to reclaim the cemetery for nearly 100 years. The PDF file here linked contains that history as well as my own efforts to to reclaim the cemetery.
