BONIN, Catherine Etha "Katie" - It is with great sorrow that we announce
the passing of Catherine Etha "Katie" Bonin, on October 9, 1999, at the
Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston. She will be lovingly remembered and
sadly missed by her daughter, Myra (Mrs. David Logan), Winnipeg, Man.;
and daughters-in-law, Patricia "Patty", Bertha, both of D'Escousse; Gladys,
Saint John, N.B.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Katie joins
her husband, Leonard; her sons, Alvin, Mark, Daniel Theodore "Ted" and four
children who died in infancy. She was born in Poirierville, Richmond Co.,
on June 15, 1909, to the late Alexander and Alexandrine
(Poirier) Poirier. Katie was born in a family of 16 children. While
growing up in this large family, everyone had their tasks. Katie became
the "bread maker". She also entertained her mother in the evening playing
the organ. This was done by ear, as written music was not always available.
Katie completed her high school education in Poirierville. On September
15m 1930, she married the late Leonard Bonin in Moncton, N.B. and they
started a poultry farm in Poirierville. To expand their business to poultry,
dairy and mixed farming, they moved to D'Escousse in 1946. Katie was a
loving wife and mother and a tireless worker. She was a very active church
member and always had a deep concern for her many friends; everyone's problem
became hers. She was a woman of great faith who strived always to love
her beliefs through action. Katie enjoyed traveling, knitting, cooking
and having family gatherings, loved to
socialize and would challenge anyone to a good game of cards along
with a lively conversation. She will be sadly missed by all, especially
her daughter Myra, who looked to her not only as a mother, but also as
her best friend; spiritually as a teacher; her confidante, and whose company
she simply enjoyed. Mother, we were fortunate to have known you and loved
you for as long as
we did before the Good Lord called you home to rest in peace. Visitation
will be held in St. Hyacinth's Parish Memorial Room today from 2-4 and
7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday morning,
October 12, in St. Hyacinth's Roman Catholic Church in D'Escousse, at 10:30
a.m., with Rev. John J. MacDonald officiating, assisted by Rev. Bruno
Ruel and Rev. Peter Baccardax. Interment will follow in St. Hyacinth's Parish
Cemetery. Following the interment prayer, a reception for family and friends
will be held at the Yacht Club in D'Escousse. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Canadian
Cancer Society or the charity of choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to
C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home, Arichat.
