Leonard Philip Edwards
By: Joyce Cameron
Wednesday, January 31, 2001
Father, teacher, choir member, Rotarian, curler, golfer. Born June 12, 1905, in
Arichat, Cape Breton, N.S. Died Nov. 24, 2000, in Fredericton, N.B., of
pneumonia, aged 95. When young Leonard Edwards couldn't gain admission to
college, he turned his attention to the other side of the classroom -- the
teaching side -- and kept it there for the next 75 years of his life. At two
months of age, Leonard had convulsions and nearly died. While he lost vision in
one eye from the illness, he developed an extraordinary zest for life and
indomitable spirit. He first tasted formal learning at the age of 4. That early
start, however, had him graduate from high school (which then ended with
Grade 11 in Nova Scotia) too young to attend university. At 15, he had to take
another direction. His first positions as a teacher were at Janvin's Harbour School
and Pondville, not far from his home in Arichat. As the schools' only teacher,
he taught all subjects in 11 grades to all students -- some older than he
was. By the time he was old enough for the Nova Scotia Normal School in Truro
in February, 1924, he had taught for 3« years. With speed, efficiency and a
high level of achievement he earned a Superior Licence in five months.
Next came positions as principal at the age of 19 at Joggins Mines, N.S., where
he met his future wife Bernice (now deceased). Then as a teacher at
Pictou Academy, during which time he was married. Then, as principal, in River
Hebert, N.S., where all three of his children were born. Between 1935 and 1938,
Dr. Edwards was finally able to pursue a university degree full-time at Acadia,
earning a BA in 1937 and an MA in 1938. He taught throughout at Horton Academy,
acting at the same time as housemaster at the Horton residence where the family
lived. His studies came to a stop and a postgraduate scholarship for Cornell
University had to be refused when problems with his one good eye developed. But
his teaching continued. He served as principal of Windsor Academy until 1946
and lectured in summer school at Acadia. The influx of veterans after the
Second World War brought his 23 years of teaching in NovaScotia public schools
to an end and commenced his 27-year relationship with the University of
New Brunswick in the city where he spent his remaining years. Dr. Edwards
liked to recall that it was UNB President Milton Gregg himself who invited him
to teach mathematics in Fredericton. At UNB, he taught all his children:
Stirling, Merrill and Diane. During 1966-70, he served as department head.
Students flocked to the courses bearing the magic name of L. P. Edwards. He
became known as the mathematics teacher. In recognition of his outstanding
teaching, he received the first Excellence in Teaching Award at UNB in 1972. In
that same year, he received an honorary doctorate from Kings College in Halifax
in recognition of his contributions not only in education but also as an active
Anglican layman. Following his retirement from UNB in 1973, he was made a
professor emeritus, continued to teach courses and eventually started tutoring,
usually five to six students a year. Many said they went to him because he'd
taught their parents, and their parents had sent them. He decided at 90 he
would stop tutoring. A call from one more student kept him teaching a little
bit longer. Twice a week from his home, his explanations helped his last
student understand the tougher concepts in calculus and earn an A. While
Dr. Edwards will be remembered by many for his teaching, administrative
abilities, and active role in community and church life, his children may best
remember him for his singing. He sang when he got up in the morning. He sang
while he fixed things. He was still singing in hospital the week before he
died.
