GALLANT, Helene - 80, Arichat, formerly of New Waterford and St. Joseph du Moine, died Sunday at home. Born in St. Joseph du Moine, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Rose (Chaisson) Desveaux. She was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Arichat. She is survived by her husband, Charlie Joe; five sons, Bernard, Thomas, Vince, all of Calgary; Alvin, Hampton, N. B.; Andrew, Alberton, P. E. I.; six daughters, Rose, Dartmouth; Pauline (Mrs. Cyril Boudreau), Mrs. Marg Samson, Celeste (Mrs. Phil Boudreau), all of Petit de Grat; Annette (Mrs. Art Petrie), Laval. Que.; Claudette (Sister of St. Martha); a brother, Albert, New Waterford: seven sisters, Adele Desveaux, St. Joseph du Moine; Catherine Chaisson, Grand Etang; Lucy Ann Aucoin, New Waterford; Rose Alice Boudreau, Sydney; Lena Chaisson, Antigonish; Sophie Desveaux, Jeanette Doucette, both of Ottawa; 36 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph. The body is in C. H. Boudreau Funeral Home, Arichat, visiting 2-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. River Bourgeois - Charles A. Grimes, 83, of River Bourgeois, died Monday in City of Sydney Hospital, Sydney. Born in Boston, Mass., he was a son of the late Alfred and Pauline (Fougere) Grimes. He is survived by his wife, the former Genevieve Boucher; a son, Carol, River Bourgeois; a sister, Mrs. Louise Sampson, Boston, Mass.; and three grandchildren. The
body is in his residence in River Bourgeois. Funeral service will be in St. John the Baptist Church, River Bourgeois, 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the parish Cemetery.

GAUDET, Joseph (Nelson) - 56, Port Hawkesbury, died April 24, 1995, in Strait Richmond Hospital. Born in Concession, Digby Co., he was a son of Louise (Landry) Gaudet, Yarmouth and the late Gerald Gaudet. He managed Central Trust
for many years and was active in the community. He was past president of the Curling Club and Arthritis Society and was a member of the Inverness School Board for several years. He was a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus and a renowned
chowder chef. GOODWIN, Ervine Reede - 74, Yarmouth, died May 22, 1995, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Lower Argyle, Yarmouth County, he was a son of the late Alonzo and Freedonia (Hamilton) Goodwin. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 61, Yarmouth. He was a fisherman all his working life. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Joseph and Agnes Landry, also of Halifax. She worked several years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ottawa. She later worked with the Department of Employment and Immigration as a project officer, travelling the province of Nova Scotia in their job creation branch. She is survived by daughters, Lynda-Anne (Peter Fletcher, Ottawa); SueEllen (Gerry McCarron, Ottawa); Nancy-Lou, Halifax; son, John (Susanna Prentiss, Dartmouth); grandchildren, Asha, Danny, Sean, Julia and Devon; sister, Linda Partington (Bob, Halifax); brothers, Joe Landry (Geraldine, Vineland, Ont.), Paul Landry (Mary, Fairfield, Conn.); John Landry (Colleen, Halifax) and

River Bourgeois- Robert Glen Gibson, 45, of River Bourgeois died Friday. Born in Brandon, Man., he was a son of Samuel and Kelsie (Platford) Gibson. Surviving besides his wife Joy are two sons, Alan and Donnie, both of River Bourgeois;
three daughters, Kathie, Halifax; Barbara and Jennifer, both at home; a sister, Mrs. Beverly Page, Winnipeg. He was predeceased by a son Douglas Glen. The body will be in Alex A. Morrison's Funeral Home, St. Peter's, after 5 p.m. today.

GOYETCHE GODFREY- 86,Worcester,Mass.,died March 22,1996,in Memorial Hospital.Worcester.Born in Cape Auguet,he was the son of the late Arthur and Emily Ann (DeCoste)Goyetche.In his early years,he followed a seafaring career on fishing schooners,sailing out of the ports of Montauk,N.Y.,and Gloucester,Mass.Surviving are sister,Ida Stone,Arichat;brother,Arthur,West Bay;numerous nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by stepbrother,Wilfred;brothers,Clarence,Delore;sister,Mary Louise.

GOYETCHE, Richard J. - 50, St. Peter's, died Tuesday, October 26, 1999, suddenly in the Strait mRichmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Boston, Mass., he was a son of Stella (Harvey) and the late Elmer Henry Goyetche. Surviving are his mother, Stella, Watertown, Mass.; brothers, Paul, San Jose, Calif.; Michael, Nahant, Mass.; sister, Jeanette; brother-in-law, Gerry Hoffman; niece, Gina; nephew, Luke, all of America Canyon, Calif.; aunt, Valerie Goyetche, St. Peter's; several cousins in Canada and the U.S.A. Richard was a graduate of Boston State College and taught school in Georgetown, Mass. for several years. He later moved to Cape Breton, where he had deep roots and loved to be. His remains will be resting in the River Bourgeois Funeral Parlor on Saturday 2-9 p.m. with funeral on Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, River Bourgeois, Rev. He was a successful businessman in Dartmouth for 31 years where he owned and operated Portland Electric's Ltd. He was a long-time member of St. Peters Church and a respected member of Knights of Columbus, holding positions of navigator of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly and Grand Knight Third Degree Council 3133, Dartmouth. He also gave his time for many years to the Kiwanas Club. He enjoyed curling, golfing and
was a long-time member of both the Dartmouth Curling Club and Brightwood Golf Club. He also enjoyed playing bridge, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Helen (Fougere); daughters, Donna Barnett, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Nikki and Sarah; Maureen Goyeche, Mississauga; son-in-law, Gary Ward; Janet Goyeche, Dartmouth; son-in-law, Wayne Skinner; sisters, Anita, Margaret; brother, Joseph. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Maurice Sampson and Rebecca (Bona) (Sampson) Pottie. For 28 years she and George resided in Port Hawkesbury where they enjoyed the company of many friends until relocating to Halifax one year ago. Rose Ann was an avid bingo player and strong supporter of the liberal party. She will be remembered as a vibrant individual who accepted everyone just as they are. Besides her husband, Captain George Grant, she is survived by sister, Mary Sampson, Dartmouth; half-brother, Cyril Pottie, Halifax; half-sister, Bernadette Duffy, Chezzetcook; brother-in-law, Harold Hanson, Bedford; niece, Elizabeth (Garnet) Sampson, Sydney. It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the passing of Marilyn Goyetche, Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Strait Richmond Hospital, surrounded by loving family and friends. An inspiration to all, Marilyn fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was an employee of the Royal Bank of Canada, and had been an employee of the Isle Madame Motel. The perfect hostess, Marilyn loved to be in the company of family and friends, especially to chat over a cup of hot tea. Born in Arichat, she was a daughter of Mildred (Briand), and the late Joseph Leo Boudreau. GOYETCHE, Marie Clariesse - 86, Halifax. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on November 12, 2004, after suffering a stroke on her birthday, five days earlier. Born in Poulamon and baptized in D'Escousse, she was a daughter of Alvina Stone and James Etienne Fougere. She is survived, and
will be greatly missed, by her children, Faye MacAvoy, Glenn (Sharon Lawrence), Annette Allen (Lance), Denyse Bagnell (Peter). She adored and doted on her grandchildren, Billy (Natasha Fletcher), Christopher (Kara Beckles) and Amy (Donald Gilkie) MacAvoy; Mark and Bradley Goyetche; Jill, Justin and Jonathan Allen, and William and Ross Bagnell. She was able to
meet her first great grandchild, Molly MacAvoy. She was predeceased by her husband, Delore Joseph, and her siblings, William, Carl, Melvin, Bernice, Kathleen, Dorothy, Alvina, and Estelle. She had a wonderful laugh and was a friend and neighbor to all. In her youth, she enjoyed skating and movies. An avid bingo player, she also enjoyed playing cards, and was a Toronto Maple leafs fan, watching hockey on television regularly. A magnetic personality, who had a steady stream of visitors, she was a wonderful listener - always interested, but never judgmental. She was able to remain in her home, where she resided for 58 years, without assistance, until the time of her passing. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayers Road, with the funeral service at her parish of St. Agnes Church on Monday, November 15, at 10 a.m. Donations may be made to the Heart and  Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Canadian Diabetes Association.

GIRROIR, Pierre Arthur - 81, Mulgrave, passed away Thursday, November 25, 2004, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in West Arichat, he was a son of the late Peter A. and Lily (Poirier) Girroir. He worked in telecommunications with Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard for 33 years, then with the Corps of Commissionaires. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Mulgrave and an avid gardener. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and the Fourth Armour Division Royal Canadian Artillery, having served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was a recipient of the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, Defense Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Normandy Medal. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. Pierre was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, the former Tish Kavanagh; daughters, Dr. Martha (Steven) Cooper, Sylvester, Ga.; Lillian Girroir, Canning; son, Peter, Saskatoon; sister, Amelia (Eric) Samson, West Arichat; granddaughters, Michelle Webster, Centreville, Kings Co.; Jennifer Webster, Banff, Alta. A wonderful husband, great dad, father-in-law, friend and loving grandfather "Papa", Joseph Samuel Gracie, passed away quietly and peacefully in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, on April 28, 2006, with Beatrice, his devoted and loving wife of 47 and a half years, and daughters, Wanda, Brenda and Paula, by his side, who gave him tremendous support, love and care during his courageous battle with cancer. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing such a wonderful, caring person, especially his grandchildren, Marc MacIntosh, Jordan Gracie and Kayleigh Gracie Wells, and sons-in-law, Edward and Tim. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, he was a son of the late Samuel and Louise (Sampson) Gracie. GOYETCHE, Gilbert. (1934-2006). Passed away peacefully at Royal Victoria Hospital on July 28, 2006 at the age of seventy-two. He will be sadly missed by his wife of eighteen years, Lise Goyetche and stepdaughter Nathalie. He
also leaves to mourn his daughters Debbie D'Alstolfo (Luigi D'Astolfo) and Barbie Goyetche (Leo Bourque), his son Daniel Goyetche (Marika Goyetche) and grandchildren Laura and Anthony D'Astolfo. 81, New Waterford It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of their mother, Rita Carmel Grace, on Dec. 17, 2007, at the  Maple Hill Manor, surrounded by her loving family.
 Born in Lingan, she was the daughter of the late William E and  Mary Alice (Taylor) Burke.  Rita was a very jolly person, loved a good joke, she loved to  dance, skate, play scat and 45 card games, but most of all,  her family was very important to her. Rita was a member of the  New Waterford Pensionerâ?Ts Club, the Royal Canadian Legion and  Mount Carmel CWL.  Rita is survived by her daughters, Linda (Mark) MacDonald, New Waterford Kay (George) Lovell, Lingan, and Diane (John)  Grace-English, Ontario; sons, Billy (Shannon), River Ryan, Bobby, New Waterford, and George (Michelle) Lingan; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. GILLIS, Allan Roderick "Rod" - 89, Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary QEII, surrounded by his greatest treasure, his family. Born June 19, 1918, he was a son of Catherine (MacDonald) and John A. Gillis and was the last surviving member of his family. He served overseas from 1942-1945 in England, Germany, Belgium, France and Holland as a motorcycle dispatch rider with the 86th Bridge Co. On his return to civilian life he delivered bread for Ben's Bakery for several years before beginning 27 years of employment with the DND Fire Department. Rod will be most remembered for his quiet strength and generous spirit. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Norine (Sampson); sons, Bernie (Barb), Michael (Bonnie), Ronnie (Carla), and daughter Betty; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Howard, John, Hugh, Bernard, Donald and Mickey, and sisters, Agnes, Irene, Hazel, Charlotte, Martha Rowena, and special sister, Mary. She is survived by children, Eileen Almey, Ontario; Lana (Dana) Hatfield, Jerome (Linda), Bruce, Ronnie (Linda), Sandra Gerrior (Andre), Michael (Cindy), Paul (Heather), Germany; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Gerard; sisters, Jean and Marjorie; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Charlie, George, Joseph, Sylvester, Quiten; sister, Angeline. Visitation will be held 2-4, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, in St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Windmill Road, Dartmouth. Obituary for Willard Joseph George

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Willard Joseph George, 85 of Arichat in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Thursday October 6, 2011. Born in Janvrins Island he was the son of the late Clinton W. and M. Elizabeth (Forgeron) George. A quiet, peaceful man, loved deeply by his family and respected by all who knew him. His outstanding mechanical skills were Willard's trademark. He held a certificate of Qualification in the Motor Vehicle Repair Trade; He received a certificate of Qualification for the Refrigeration and Air Condition Trade. Willard received the Residential oil burner Installation and servicing trade certificate. He also became a certified Oil Burner Mechanic. Willard completed the requirements under the Education of the Province of NS and he was granted the Vocational Teachers certificate class I for teaching in the Public Vocational Schools of NS. He taught small motors and welding in the Isle Madame District High School. Upon retirement
he was awarded for 18 years in this service. During this time Willard was also responsible for the school maintenance, including the heating system. In 1948 he married Lorna Britten and they had a family of six; Noreen Brennan (John), Elaine Boudreau (Odilon), Lloyd George (Johanna), Arlene Hillier (Lloyd), Geralyn Thornhill (Frank), and Imelda George. He also leaved to mourn sixteen grandchildren; Kelly, Erin, Bridget, Adele, Chantal, Aleasha, Myla, Micheline, Matthew, Lisa, Nadia, Kyle, Keagan, Jennifer, Sarah, and Jacob. Great grandchildren Eric, Jillian, Alex, Ethan and Ellie and Riley  his sister Gertie McGrath. He was predeceased by brother Joseph Clancy, sisters: Cecelia McGrath and Mary Lillian Landry Visitation will be held in C.H. Funeral Home in Arichat on Sunday October
9th from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass to celebrate Willard's life will take place Monday October 10th at 10:00 am in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Arichat. with Father Will Macpherson officiating. Burial to follow in the Our Lady of Assumption Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Our Lady of Assumption Cemetery Fund or a charity of one's choice. GEORGE, JOSEPH EDMOND - 88, Port Hawkesbury, formerly of Janvrin's Harbour passed away January 23, 2012, at the Strait Richmond Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was the youngest son of the late Alexander and Mary (Laurence) George. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Lorraine (McGrath) George and six children; Donna, Yarmouth; Gwendolyn (Lawrence) Fougere, Eric (Donna), Daphne (Ronald) MacDonald all of Port Hawkesbury; Susan (Stephen) Pineo, Alb., and Kimberly at home; Edmond is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law Valerie,
Port Hawkesbury and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son Michael; great granddaughter, Halle MacNeil; seven sisters and five brothers. Edmond's lifelong career, love and pride of fishing never ended with his retirement in 1989 and he spoke fondly of this to anyone who knew him. He was also an avid gardener who took special pride in growing his own vegetables especially his home grown potatoes. Edmond left all of his grandchildren, whom he was so proud of, with wonderful stories that they can treasure forever. He will be sadly missed by all of his family and many. many friends. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, January 27th in St. Joseph's Parish, Port Hawkesbury at 10 am. A private family burial is to follow at a later date.
