HAGEN, A.N. (Lillian) - 98, Halifax, died October 26, 1996, in QE II Health
Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site, after a short illness. She was a daughter of
the late Captain and Mrs. Paul Landry. She was born in Arichat and came to
Halifax in 1917. She was senior matron of immigration at Pier 21 for 25 years.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are
daughters, Mrs. Marie Cameron, London, Ont.; Therese, at home; Agnes (Mrs.
Melvin Allen), Head of St. Margarets Bay; Pat (Mrs. Charles Backman), Hubbards;
numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial service to be announced at a later date.

HUNTER, Ida Mae - The children of Ida Mae Hunter express with deep sorrow the
passing our mother and our friend, peacefully on Wednesday, October 22, 1997, at
her home in Burlington, Ont. Born September 21, 1918, in Poulamon, the
daughter of Henry Fougere and Mary Alexina (Landry), a resident of Halifax for
60 years, where she raised her family with her late beloved husband, James
Garfield Hunter. She is deeply loved and missed by her daughters, Beverly (Mrs.
Massoud Kaye), West Palm Beach, Fla.; Karen (Mrs. Donald Mullins), West
Bloomfield, Mich.; Janet (Mrs. David Cassidy), Burlington; Denise (Mrs. Rupert
Gleason-Beard), Ottawa, Ont.; son, Blair, Basking Ridge, N.J.; sister, Anne
Celia Nelms, Escondido, Calif.; god-daughter, Sister Marie Fougere, Rogersville,
N.B. Nana will always be loved and sadly missed by her grandchildren, Joseph,
Susan, Meisha, Michael, Sheila and Julie. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m.

Mrs. Gordon Hulford, 64, of 558 George Street, died Thursday night in City of Sydney Hospital. The former Mary Viola Sampson of Louisdale, she was a daughter of the Lawrence and Zelia Sampson. Besides her huysband, Mrs. Hulford is survived by one daughter, Lillian (Mrs. Tom O’Flaherty), Amherst View, Ont., and one son, Gordon Jr., Sydney; four grandchildren; four brothers, Joseph, Louisdale, James, Halifax, Lawrence, Petit de Grat, Abraham, St. Peter’s; four sisters, (Obelin) Mrs. William Marchand, (Margaret) Mrs. Wilfred Linden, (Virginia) Mrs. Tom Hall, all in Sydney, (Rita) Mrs. Godfrey B. Marchand, Toronto. She was predeceased by her sister Cecilia (Mrs. Gilbert Sampson). Her body rests at T.W. Curry’s Parkview Chapel, 755 George Street. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sacred Heart Church, and interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery.

HILCHIE, Charles 'Charlie' Robert Forsey - 74, Fall River, died Thursday,
November 19, 1998, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Halifax,
he was a son of the late Charles T. and Harriett (Forsey) Hilchie. He retired
from the Halifax Fire Department after 29 years of service. He was a longtime
member of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Fall River. Surviving
are his wife, the former Jeanette Pertus; niece Joyce Holland, Hamilton,
Ont.; brother-in-law, John and wife Trudy, Halifax; sister-in-law, Susan
Murphy, D'Escousse. He was predeceased by stepsister, Margaret Wournell.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service 11 a.m.

HARKER, Rose Anna "Rosie" - age 69, of Lower l' Ardoise, died unexpectedly
on June 12, 1999, at home. Born in L'Ardoise, Richmond Co., she was the
daughter of the late Samuel and Angeline (Mombourquette) Peters. She was
a member of the Holy Guardian Angel Parish, L'Ardoise. She was active in
her community as a member of the l'Ardoise Fire Department
Auxilary; the Ladies Social Club; the Seniors Jolly Club; the Annual
l'Ardoise Festival; and past long time member of the l'Ardoise Legion
Ladies Auxilary. Rosie was employed for several years with the l'Ardoise
Parish as housekeeper. She will be forever remembered as a wonderful mother,
grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She is survived by daughters,

Sciences Centre. Born in Lundy, Guysborough Co., she was the daughter of
the late Patrick and Catherine (Gerrior) Pettipas. She was a resident of
Northwood Manor, Halifax, for the past year and a half, prior to which she
had resided in New Glasgow for fifty years. She was a former long-time employee
of Bagnell's Laundry. She was a member of St. Gregory's Roman Catholic Church,
New Glasgow. She is survived by daughter, Barbara Nicholson, Truro; grandchildren,
John Nicholson, Halifax;
Anita Kelloway, Fresno, Calif.; Brad Westerman, at home, Truro; great-grandson,
William; and brother, Leonard Dunfield, Falmouth. She was predeceased
by a son, Leonard. Her remains will rest in H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New
Glasgow, visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral mass will be held 2

HEARN, John Michael Sr. - 91, 114 Kennedy Ave., Sydney, formerly of Bentinck
Street, died March 20, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Patrick and Annie (Cleary) Hearn.
He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney. He was a respected
member of the business community in Sydney since 1930, initially operating
a taxi business and then he became a hotel operator, running the Royal
Hotel on the Esplanade for over 30 years, retiring in 1974. Surviving
are son, John Jr., with whom he resided; sister, Mrs. Margaret Brackett,
Halifax; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren He was
predeceased by his wife the former, Catherine Boucher; son, Patrick
Charles; granddaughter, Danielle; seven sisters, one brother. No visitation.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral 9 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church,
Rev. Anthony O' Connor officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Sydney.

HINES, William Albert "Bill" - 61, Princeville, passed away Sunday,
October 3, 2004, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in
Ingonish, he was a son of the late Hugh and Alfretta (Hawley) Hines.
He worked at the Heavy Water Plant for 18 years as a carpenter and he was
also a self-employed contractor. He was a former union brother of Carpenters
and Joiners of America, Local No.1588. He was a member of St. Margaret's
Roman Catholic Parish, West Bay Road. He is survived by his loving wife of
33 years, Bonnie (Sampson); daughter, Laurie (Phil Marchand),
Antigonish; sons, Billy Joe (Nicole), West Arichat; Johnny (Martha
Matheson), Bedford; Tommy (Jill), Sackville; Jason (Jenell Peach), Port

HANSEN, William Ernest "Bill" - 88, Halifax, died Saturday, October 23,
2004, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in L'Ardoise, Cape
Breton and raised in Halifax, Bill was a son of the late John (Johannes) and
Annie (Morvan) Hansen of Halifax. While still in his teens, Bill began
working as a longshoreman on the Halifax waterfront. During his more than 50
years as a longshoreman, most of them as a foreman, Bill was an active
member of the International Longshoremen's Association holding various
executive positions. He was a member of a team of Halifax longshoremen who
traveled to various Great Lakes ports in the United States in 1959 and 1960,
to assist in the development of personnel to service ports of the newly
opened St. Lawrence Seaway. Bill held a lifetime membership at Windsor Park
Sergeant's Mess, where he competed successfully in many dart tournaments
over the years. Bill was also a huge fan of boxing and baseball. He is
survived by children, son, Fred (Vonnie); daughter, Chris (Claude Carter),
all of Halifax. He is also survived by grandchildren, Sean Hansen, Heather
Hansen-Dunbar, Jill Carter and Alex Carter, all of Halifax; sisters, Nora
Granter and Marie Hansen; brothers, Edward Hansen and Gerald Hansen, all of
Halifax; as well as many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his
wife, Elizabeth Lillian "Lil" (Brigley) in 1997; by brothers, Walter in
1988, Raymond and Fred both killed in 1940 in the service of their country;
and a brother and sister in infancy. Bill is resting in Atlantic Funeral
Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, where the family will receive friends from
7-9 p.m. today, and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday in Saint Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 6903

HORNE (Boudreau), Sophie Mae - 91, Halifax, passed away peacefully in
Maplestone Enhanced Care, Halifax, April 2, 2006. Born in Cape Breton on
January 10, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred Boudreau and Ellen
Jane Boudreau. Her family moved to Halifax when she was approximately five
years old. Sophie will be remembered by many for the years she ran a rooming
house in the south end of Halifax and her association with Horne and Company
Grocery Store. She is survived by her daughter, Janis (Gerald) George,
Halifax; son, Arthur (Dianne) Horne, Bedford; son-in-law, Jon Little,
Tantallon; sisters, Ina, Dorothy, both of Halifax; Jean Whitehead,
Greenwood; grandchildren, Douglas (Tracy) Gilbert, Janis Geraldine, both of
Tantallon; Karen Parsons, Halifax; Heather (Peter) Christensen, Hong Kong;
Jerry (Angie) Horne, Fall River; Susan (Michael) Ford, Sackville; Andrew
(Sara) Horne, Bedford; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Gerald;
daughter, Sandra Little; brother, Leo Boudreau; granddaughter, Joanne Horne.
A very special thanks to the staff of Maplestone Enhanced Care for their
dedication and care given to Sophie during her 21 months at the nursing
home. Visitation will be today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral
Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, Lakeside, Rev. Jim Richards officiating. Cremation will
take place after the service with interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a

HOLLETT, Genora Ann - 93, Halifax, passed away April 19, 2006, in Saint
Vincent's Guest House. Born in River Bourgeois, Cape Breton, she was a daughter
of the late Martin and Seraphine (Sampson) Pate. Genora was a founding member of
St. Catherine's Parish. She was active with many charities including Northwood
Care, Meals on Wheels and St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was a skilled knitter
and self-taught seamstress, and her talents will be appreciated for years to
come. She was an avid card player, alley bowler and lawn bowler. Genora was a
past member of St. Mary's and Wanderers Lawn Bowling Clubs. She will long be
remembered for her sense of humour. She is survived by her children, Rosalee,
British Columbia; Donna (Peter Coade), Glenn (Sandy), Carol (Ian Glasgow), Lynne
(Joe MacLean), all of Halifax; sisters, Murial Martell, Jean Connell, Bernice
Richards, Evelyn MacMillan; brother, Raymond; grandchildren, Beth, Donald,
Catherine, Jay, Colin, Graham, Heather, Arlene, Matthew, James, Steven, Kris,
Nik, Ian Jr., Timothy, Carmen, Natalie, Melanie; 17 great-grandchildren; several

HILL, Gary V. - 49, Troy, Inverness Co., formerly of Janvrin's Island, Richmond
Co., died Saturday, July 1, 2006, as the result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in Arichat, he was a son of Grace (Dorey) (Hill) Pilgrim and the late
Gordon M. Hill, and stepfather, Lewis Pilgrim, Port Hastings. Gary was a
mechanic employed with Midway Motors and had a passion for antique cars and
motorcycles. Surviving are sister, Betty Campbell and husband Bill, Antigonish;
brother, Douglas Hill and wife Brenda, Troy; nieces and nephew. Visitation will
be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. David's United Church, Port
Hastings, Rev. Wilfred Pelley officiating. Burial in St. David's Cemetery.

Hospital, Evanston, on December 28, 2006, with her loving family by her side.
Born on Janvrin's Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Walter Gus and Mary
Alma (Boudreau) Dorey. She is survived by her husband, Gerald Francis Hart,

HALL, Zachery Calvin Raymond
HALL, Zachery Calvin Raymond - 10, Halifax, passed away peacefully in IWK Health
Centre on February 15, 2006. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Calvin Hall,
Ottawa, and Lisa (Mark) Kinslow, Halifax. Zachery was an energetic student at
Prospect Elementary School, where he enjoyed outside sports, computers and
spending quality time with his friends. Zachery valiantly battled
adrenoleukodystophy (ALD) for several months. He is survived by sister, Meghan;
brother, Bretton, both of Halifax; grandmothers, Evelyn Boudreau, Isle Madame,
Richmond Co., and Phyllis Hall, Arnprior, Ont. He will be sadly missed by many
aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by grandfathers, Leonard
Boudreau and Bill Hall. Zachery will always be remembered for his strength,
bravery and loving spirit. Zachery's family would like to extend their heartfelt
thanks to those who cared for him in his difficult times, especially the staff

HEARN, Edith Mary "Mother" - 84, Rocky Bay. Our hearts are heavy as we announce
the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on
November 13, 2007, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Antigonish,
she was a daughter of the late William John and Minnie Alice (Livingstone)
Fraser. Edith was a lady who didn't know how to sit still. From helping to build
her dream home at the age of 80, to starting the Rocky Bay Quilter's Club at the
age of 82, she was a woman of many strengths and talents. She was a dedicated
nurse for almost 30 years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate
family. She is survived by daughters, Maria Mury (Francis), Gail Hearn, Alice
Fraser (Michael), Ellen Hall; sons, Paul, Leo, Michael (Michelle);
grandchildren, Mandy, Kim, Jonathan, Caroline, Michael, Andrea, Nicole, Ryan,
Alex, Carolynn, Shawn, Benjamin, Olivia, and great-granddaughter, Ella; as well
as her sister-in-law, Hazel Fraser. She was predeceased by her husband of 38
years, Lawrence Alexander "Alex" Hearn; brothers, Doug, Sam, Jim; sisters, Betty
and Isabel. Mom will be missed by many close friends and relatives, she was an
inspiration, and will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.

HEARN, Andrea M. - 24, Dartmouth. Your flame burned out on Sunday, March 2,
2008, and now you are free. But the fire in your soul lives on through your
family and friends. You were kind, fun and funny. You would put a smile on the
face of anyone who had a bad day. Sarcastic, truthful and spirited, you were
what many of us hope to be. You were a fantastic cook, artist and adventurer;
your laugh was so funny we will never forget it. Your memories will live on
through your friends who knew you best, Carla, Chris, Caroline, Ed, Courtney
Amanda, and many others. Your family, Andrea, were always by your side and they
will always be some of your biggest fans. You were as colourful as your tattoos,

HUREAU, Jeannette M. - Parkland Estates, Halifax, passed away in the early
morning of Tuesday, May 10, 2011, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in
Arichat, Cape Breton, she was the youngest daughter of the late Thomas and
Martha (Goyetche) Hureau. She was a retired employee of the Royal Bank of
Canada, had taught school in Cape Breton and worked for the Federal Govern-ment
Department of Fisheries. She was a member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church,
the Children of Mary and Catholic Women's League. She had a strong and faithful
relationship with our Lord. Although she did not have children of her own,
her life was spent caring for other family members from which she derived great
happiness and joy. Jeannette was the last surviving member of her immedi-ate
family. She is survived by her ne-phews, Gerald (Isabelle) Theriault, Halifax;
Carroll (Nancy) Leblanc, Ottawa; nieces, Corrine (Lorenzo) Boudreau, Arichat;
Regena (Norm) Atkinson, Ontario; Helen (Tony), West Arichat; Simone Leblanc,
Halifax; and Donna (Don) Lystra, Ann Arbour, Mich.; several great nieces and
neph-ews and great great nieces and neph-ews and cousins. She was predeceased by
several brothers and sisters. Vis-itation will be held on Thursday, May 12 from

HEARN (Donahue), Laura - Port Hawkesbury and formerly of Rocky Bay, passed away
August 11, 2011, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born June 23, 1921, in
Edmundston, N.B., she was the daughter of the late John and Clara (White)
Donahue. Lau-ra taught for over 35 years in area schools including Creignish,
Janvrin's Island, Rocky Bay, Cap La Ronde, Whiteside and Arichat. She loved to
teach, never stopped learning and had a sharp Irish wit till the end. Laura was
the last surviving member of her immediate family. She leaves to mourn her
children, Claire (Wayne) Lundrigan, Inverness; Sheila Hearn (John MacDonald),
Port Hawkesbury; Kevin (Rose), Fox Creek, Alta. and Mark, Rocky Bay;
grandchildren, Lori (Francis) Poirier, Inverness; Dawn Lundrigan (Prakash
Patel), Blainville, Que.; Jennifer MacDonald (Andrew Boyd), Halifax; Faye
MacDonald, Port Hawkesbury; Barrie Hearn, Kelly (Sean) Granigan and Michael
Hearn, all of Edmonton, Alta. She also leaves to mourn precious great-grandkids,

HUBLEY, Viola M. - 82, of Halifax, passed away Saturday December 10, 2011, after
a courageous battle with heart and lung disease in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
She was the daughter of the late James and Angeline Pottie. She is survived by
husband, Gerald; daughter, Janet LeBlanc; sons, Jim and Paul; grandchildren,
Lindsay and Graham; brothers, Gerald and Maxwell Pottie. She will be greatly
