OWEN, William Hampton (Bill) - 59, Halifax, passed away peacefully at home in the early hours of April 5, 1998, after a long struggle with cancer. Born in Townsville, Australia, Bill was the only child of the late Gordon Hampton Owen and the late Ruth (Clarke) Owen. Bill had a rich and varied life that took many interesting turns. He graduated from Melbourne University with a
B.Sc. in 1960 and M.Sc. in 1964, and from Sydney University with a PhD in reproductive physiology in 1969. That same year he came to Halifax on post-doctoral fellowship with the Fisheries Research Board. After two years,  he was in search of a career change and drove tractor trailers for a year before setting off for travels in Central and South America. After he returned to Canada, he spent a years studying Grizzly bears in the Arctic, then in 1975 took an M.Sc. in medical parasitology at the London School of Tropical Medicine. Following this, he worked as a miner in Thompson, Man., and then on the log booms on the British Columbia coast. In 1980, he graduated from Dalhousie University with a master of library service, and settled down to being a reference librarian at the Kellogg Health Sciences Library for the next 17 years, until his early retirement in June 1997 due to ill health. He was an avid bird watcher, photographer, traveller and had a great love of poetry, music and nature. Bill was a tireless advocate of the rights fo the East Timorese, and many other causes both local and global. He had a keen wit and a booming laugh, and lived his life with great honesty, integrity and generosity. Bill is mourned by his beloved wife, Audrey Louise Samson, and his cherished children, Phoebe Ruth and Max; stepmother, Mary Owen, and stepbrothers, Tom and David Biltoft, Melbourne; his "adopted family" the Annands: Betty, Wendy, Kirk and Chris; and his many, many friends and relations in Australia and Canada. Cremation has taken place. Bill will be remembered at a gathering at the hall of the
Universalist Unitarian Church, 5500 Inglis St., at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 13. Memorial donations may be made to the food bank, Oxfam or East Timor Alert Network, 33659-5th Ave., Mission, B.C., V2V 1X1. Arrangements entrusted to Dignity Cremation Services, Halifax.

O'NEILL (Baccardax), Ada - 101, Northwood Manor, Halifax, passed away March 17, 2000, in the manor. Born in Poirierville, Richmond Co., she was the last surviving child of the late Agapit and Annie (Poirier) Baccardax. She was predeceased by her husband, William; children, Gerald, Douglas, Gloria and Caroline; sisters, Armina, Bella, Josephine, Margaret and Caroline; brothers, Martin, Joseph, Cornelius and Wilfred. She leaves to mourn 10 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren; also loving daughters-in-law, Joan and Estelle; and son-in-law, Clyde Matthews; as well as many nieces and nephews, in particular her faithful Godson, Wilfred and his wife Claire Baccardax. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Funeral mass will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Church, Russell Street, Halifax. OWENS, Edward Vernon - 24, St. Peters, died in a house fire, April 21, 2000. He was a son of Katie (MacAulay) Boudreau and the late Eddie Owens. He was a welder by trade and was a member of local 682 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters. He is survived by his mother, Katie Boudreau; stepfather, Blair Boudreau; brother, Robert Owens; sister, Tiffany; companion, Leslie Touesnard; her daughter, Hughena; stepgrandparents, David and Laura Boudreau. He was predeceased by his father, Eddie Owens (1992); maternal grandparents, Buddy and Dolena MacAulay; Rose (Bartholomew) MacAulay; paternal grandparents, Bill and Lillian Owens; uncle, Lionel Owens. Visitation will be in River Bourgeois Funeral Home Sunday 2-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Monday 2 p.m. in the United Church in St. Peters, Rev. Anthony Ware officiating. Burial will be in the Grand River Cemetery, Grand River. Donations may be made to the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Unit at Strait Richmond Hospital. O'HEARN, Leo Francis - 87, passed away May 17, 2002, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late William and Bridget (Glazebrook) O'Hearn. He served with the Princess Louise Fusiliers. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the military overseas in England. Surviving are his son, Patrick (Madeline); grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Pat (Penny). O'CONNELL, Mary Jane - 87, River Bourgeois, passed away July 13, 2002, in Richmond Villa, St. Peter's. Born July 28, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Racheal (Sampson) Bourke. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are son, Donald (Margaret), Porters Lake; granddaughters, Patricia and Maureen O'Connell; great-grandsons, Eoin and Jamie. She was predeceased by her husband, Stewart. No visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Funeral 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, in St. John The Baptist Church, River Bourgeois. Burial in the parish cemetery.

O'CONNELL, Carl Francis "Bud" - 73. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carl on October 15, 2004, at home, with his loving and devoted wife at his side. He was born in Halifax and was a son of the late Francis O'Connell and Rita (Sampson) O'Connell. He was in the 27th Brigade and was stationed in Germany. He worked for 35 years at the D.N.D. He loved jazz music and staying fit with his yoga and jogging. He also enjoyed portrait and caricature drawing and was an avid cartoonist, some of which appeared in the Metro Weekly and The Daily News. He had a sharp wit and an even sharper sense of humor. He will be sadly missed by his wife of nearly 50 years, Inge (Hellberg); sons, Frank, Mike, Gary (Jane), all of Halifax; daughter, Cathe (Rob) DeSantis, Newmarket, Ont., and his grandchildren; sisters, Shirley (Harry) Mitchell, Toronto; Joyce (Jeff) Beaudry, Lower Sackville; Sandra, Halifax; brothers, Roy (Patsy), Harold (Barbara), David (Jane), all of Dartmouth. We would like to send a special thank you to the VON and Palliative Care nurses who gave their unending support to his family. There will be no service at Bud's request. OAKLEY, Mary Effie - 83, Lower L'Ardoise, passed away December 3, 2004, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in L'Ardoise, she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Annie (Briand) Martell. She was the beloved wife of 61 years of Kenneth; cherished mother of Anne Drouillard, Walter (Nancy), Ontario; Diane (Bill) Heighton, Dartmouth; Geraldine (Binney) Leslie, Dartmouth; Agnes, L'Ardoise; Pat (Heather), New Brunswick; Joseph, Ottawa; Cornelius (Christine), L'Ardoise; Theresa (Keith), Halifax; Paul (Sabrina), New Brunswick; Joanne (Stephen), L'Ardoise; Lesa (Paul), L'Ardoise; loving grandmother of 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mary was a lifetime member of the L'Ardoise Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the L'Ardoise Auxiliary Legion Branch 110. She was a devoted member for many organizations and functions in the community. She was predeceased by brother, Cornelius, and son-in-law, Gerald Drouillard. She will be sadly missed by nieces, nephews and many dear friends. A chance to share memories with family and friends will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Funeral Parlor. Funeral mass will be offered Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Church with Rev. Barrett Clair Johnson officiating. Cremation will follow. O'HEARN, John James SSgt (Retired) - 75, Pondville, Richmond Co., passed away May 5, 2006, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Everett, Mass., he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Bona) O'Hearn. John served in the United States Army, Navy and Air Force from 1950-1971, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. John was active in the community and was employed by Walmart Canada. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, the former Lillian Boudreau; son, Michael (Michelle), Houston, Tex.; daughters, Karyn and Cheryl, both of Sydney; sister, Catherine Ann Johnston, Sydney; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Bernadette. Visitation will be held in C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home, Arichat on Sunday, May 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Service of Remembrance will be held Monday morning at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Assumption Church, Arichat, with Rev. late John and Anastasia (Briand) Martell.Johanna used to do volunteer work at Victoria Haven Nursing Home and was always known for her hardy laugh and great sense of humour.She is survived by her son, Jamie (Barbara) Orchieson, Glace Bay; sister, Phil Martell, Glace Bay; and three grandchildren, Hunter, Hanna, Glace Bay, Christopher, Dartmouth.Johanna was predeceased by her husband, John
