Llangattock Lingoed Geneaology: Surname Index

Surname Index

Note: This is an index of names, not of persons. So two persons of the same name on a particular record will appear only once. Where variant names in a record clearly refer to the same person (e.g. in successive censuses), they have been combined.  Elsewhere, though, remember that spellings can vary considerably: Cinvin/Kinvin/Kinvyn or Reynolds/Reignallds, for example.

Although they are of limited value, we have also indexed Missing Surnames

There are problems in indexing early Welsh names, because of the later adoption of surnames and their variable use. This applies to Monmouthshire, even though it was one of the more anglicised Welsh counties. Names that specifically include 'ap' ; (also 'ab'; 'son of') or 'ferch' (also 'verch', 'vergh', 'vch', 'vz', 'ach' or 'ych'; 'daughter of') are indexed as if the father's name is a surname; with other names it is assumed that they are written with forename(s) preceding surname.

Click here for a brief description of the use of 'ap' and 'ferch'.

Click here for a fuller explanation of the patronymic system and associated problems.
